DAMN YOU, JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH!!!

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

So do you think I did okay with the birthday surprise on the last entry? Dizzy thinks so… I’m humble in my awesomeness but I think that I did pretty good… and the comments have been good on the Facebook. Maybe I am pretty good at this dating thing… or at least the presents part. Aside from that, Father’s Day was pretty cool. I talked with my stepdad for a few minutes and wished him a happy father’s day. He’s a good dude & I feel like he doesn’t get the respect that he should most of the time. He’s soft-spoken and… let’s face it, easily mockable most of the time… but he’s a great guy, very nice & most importantly makes my mom happy. When he married into the family, he basically went from a kind of snooty, arrogant “upper class” family into a gaggle of rednecks… and I know it wasn’t easy. Hell, I was the good one & I gave him plenty of grief… but I was a teenager, what do you expect? My brother though has never been a treat to anybody… and even his own son has ended up siding more with the other side of the family & staying away from him… which is unfortunately because he really loves that red-headed stepbrother of mine (as he should). So with that, thanks for putting up with all of us, Lavar! You’re a good sh*t…

As for my dad, he’s been recovering from his torn MCL & ACL since Easter when it happened, but he’s back at work with crutches. I got him some books as a present, one is an encyclopedia about Harley-Davidson motorcycles… and the other was a nice little one I found on Amazon about a man who basically went through his dad’s journal about a great road trip across America just before WWII on his Harley… called “The Old Man & the Harley” or something like that. He said that he has it next to his seat at the house so he can read it… and that’s cool. He & I are a lot a like… and apparently that means difficult to shop for. Anything that we particularly need or even want, we’ll basically take care of it or build it ourselves… so usually we get things like gift certificates, movies that came out for the holidays that we may or may not already have, sports memorabilia, stuff like that. Sure it can be frustrating for those trying to get gifts… but honestly, as long as we get a quick phone call or letter or something that just says “Hey, happy birthday” or whatever, we’re pretty good with that. Cash works too. Anyway, I gave him a call last weekend because… well, I thought it was Father’s Day… but also this last weekend when it was… and he’s in high spirits & I can’t wait to see both of them in about a month. Happy Father’s (or Not-A-Father’s) Day EVERYBODY!!!

So for the past week or so, I’ve been playing a new video game “NBA 2K13” and yes, I’m about a year behind everybody else in the world when it comes to video games because… unless it’s “Assassin’s Creed 5” or about every third “Madden” title, then I can wait a few months until it drops from $60+ to $20. Basically, this is game may have been made specifically for me just from an introductory perspective… it’s a basketball game… produced by Jay-Z… has past greats involved… and has a number of different play modes including a mode called My Career where you basically make a character & take them through their career. From rookie camps to draft day to riding the bench to making your way to starter to endorsement deals to answering media questions to free agency to All Star games to playoffs & championship to maybe even the Hall of Fame. Pretty cool, right? Well, like I said, I’m a week into it… and it’s my first time playing a 2K game (usually an EA Sports guy) and there’s a bit of a learning curve… but I’m liking it thus far, even if it’s frustrating at some points. Seriously guys, I’m not going to miss wide open layups just so you can keep me under 20 points a game off the bench… and the whole free throw system seems really off to me… still have no idea where & when I’m supposed to release it because the realistic way always seem wrong… but I get it. Gotta walk before you ball. The soundtrack is bangin’… the play for the most part is pretty smooth though there are a few things that irritate me… like how I suddenly turn ghost from time to time & people can pass right through me on defense… and again, the layups that just won’t go in (for that matter they won’t let a 6’9” small forward with a dunk rating in the mid 60’s dunk either, WTF?). I’ll keep you posted but I really like the game thus far.

Current Status: After an average showing at the Rookie Showcase, Steve Love was drafted #14 by the Milwaukee Bucks (though real life #14 pick John Henson is also on the team). After producing decent numbers on 5-6 minutes of the bench for the first ten games or so. I’ve moved into the starting lineup… so I get about 15 minutes a game (5 minute quarters) and… basically the hardest part for me getting points… is getting the ball away from Brandon Jennings & Monta Ellis, the two ballhog guards… but Ellis is injured now so… yay, I’ve stepped into the two-guard spot where I can drain threes a few times before they play tough on me. Starting to get a feel for the defensive controls & post moves too & always dishing out dimes so it’s going pretty good. About 18 games into the season, we’re 11-7 but 6-1 since I was in the lineup (tough loss to the Spurs, who “magically” went on 12-0 runs whenever I was out of the game) and even though my stats aren’t AMAZING due to a sub-40% free throw and/or layups being very iffy, I’m doing pretty decent. Here’s a shot of my billboard & magazine cover…

Speaking of basketball, I decided to watch my first full game of the year… since it was Game 6 of the NBA Finals and my San Antonio Spurs (fan since David Robinson’s rookie year) were ready to wrap up their 5th title against the Miami Heat. So I went down to Café Prague to watch the game & Dizzy met up with me at halftime. Tim Duncan OWNED the first half, posting a career high with 25 first half points… but the Spurs were up by only six. They extended that lead to 10 at the start of the 4th… and then apparently LeBron James removed his headband… not unlike Clark Kent removing his glasses… and he brought them back to a good close game… a few no calls that would’ve been for the Spurs but hey, that’s how it’s played in the playoffs… then for some reason they decide to leave wide open in the corner, not a great three-point shooter… but THE GREATEST THREE-POINT SHOOTER IN NBA HISTORY, JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH HIMSELF… RAY ALLEN!!! So… of course he made the tying shot… hard fought overtime… and now there will be a Game 7 tomorrow night. The only catch… I have a work outing tomorrow night in honor of my new Boss Man. All I have to say is… if they don’t have a TV with the game on… then I’ll be excusing myself to go to the bathroom A LOT during the night. “Excuse me, nature calls… at the bar across the street… I’ll be back in… 35, 45 minutes. Oh… and I’m taking this beverage with me.” Anyway, first world problems… here’s the news…

Whining About Wine - Award-winning chef Charlie Trotter is being sued by two New York wine collectors who say he sold them a bottle of wine for more than $46,000 that wasn't what it said on the label. (GASP!!!) The federal lawsuit filed Thursday in Chicago accuses Trotter and one of his wine experts of duping them into buying what they thought was a magnum of 1945 Romanee-Conti from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti winery in June 2012. The collectors, Bekim and Ilir Frrokaj (Beh-KEEM' and ih-LEER' FRO'-kuh), say an appraisal firm concluded the bottle was counterfeit. They are seeking damages of more than $76,000 (emotional distress I’m sure). They accuse Trotter and his company of violating Illinois consumer fraud laws. An attorney for Trotter, John Riccione, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Friday. Here’s the thing… you’re buying a bottle of rotten grape juice. I mean… think about it. I’m a huge fan of wine, don’t get me started… and having a winery down the road would basically be a dream come true… but why would anyone spend $46,000 on a bottle of wine as opposed to… I don’t know, a luxury sedan? Does this sh*t cure cancer? No, wait… they’d add a few zeroes if that was the case… but still, it’s f**king grape juice. You got conned! Probably after Chuck Trotter got conned! After somebody else conned a fellow hustler & so on & so forth. Drink Mangria!

Birthday Suit – Speaking of ridiculous lawsuits, a production company making a documentary about the song "Happy Birthday to You" is challenging the copyright to the famous jingle. Good Morning To You Productions Corp., which is working on a film tentatively titled "Happy Birthday," argues in a lawsuit filed Thursday that the song should be "dedicated to public use and in the public domain." The company is seeking monetary damages and restitution of more than $5 million in licensing fees collected by Warner/Chappell Music Inc. from thousands of people and groups who've paid it licensing fees. "More than 120 years after the melody to which the simple lyrics of Happy Birthday to You is set was first published, defendant Warner/Chappell boldly, but wrongfully and unlawfully, insists that it owns the copyright to Happy Birthday to You," the lawsuit states. Warner/Chappell, based in Los Angeles, claims exclusive copyright to "Happy Birthday to You," which Guinness World Records has called the most famous song in the English language. The company, whose artists include Aretha Franklin, Barry Gibb, Rob Zombie, Madonna and Michael Jackson, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. Good Morning To You Productions argues that evidence dating to 1893 helps show the song's copyright expired around 1921. It says four previous copyrights to the melody of the similar-sounding song "Good Morning to All," filed in 1893, 1896, 1899 and 1907, have expired or been forfeited. The class action lawsuit says that Warner/Chappell claims the exclusive copyright to the song based on piano arrangements published in 1935 but that the copyright applies only to the piano arraignment and not to the melody or lyrics. LAWYERED!!! The film company filed the lawsuit after having to pay Warner/Chappell a $1,500 licensing fee and sign an agreement to use the song in a scene — or face a $150,000 penalty. What does it mean? Some lawyers are gonna get paid… and you can keep singing happy birthday dozens of times a year without looking over your shoulder for Big Brother… at least for a few more weeks. All I gotta say is… Cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake…

Diary of Not-Anne Frank - U.S. officials on Thursday unveiled the 400-page diary of Alfred Rosenberg, a top aide to Adolf Hitler, who oversaw the genocide against Jews and others during World War Two. The diary disappeared after the Nuremberg trials in 1946, sparking a nearly 70-year hunt that ended on April 5th in the upstate New York town of Lewiston, at the home of an academic named Herbert Richardson. The diary pages, hand-written in German and not yet completely translated into English by scholars, offers a broader look at the Third Reich's policies and practices, as well as an unvarnished account of a Nazi leader's thoughts, authorities said at a news conference on Thursday. "These 400 pages are a window into the dark soul of one of the great wrongs in human history," said John Morton, director of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, which investigates cases of missing cultural property. "It's significant because, as time marches on, there are fewer living witnesses of what happened during the Holocaust. We still don't know the full extent." Pages of the diary, which will eventually be turned over to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., were shown to reporters, including one entry dated April 1941. Rosenberg describes walking alone after "an important meeting" with Hitler, who told him: "Your great hour has come." Museum senior adviser Henry Mayer, who had been searching for the diary for 17 years, noted Rosenberg did not elaborate in the entry. "What Hitler described was so great, he couldn't put it down," Mayer told reporters. U.S. officials have long suspected that a prosecutor, Robert Kempner, smuggled the diary back to the United States after the Nuremberg trial. Born in Germany, Kempner fled to America in the 1930s to escape the Nazis, only to return for post-war trials. He is credited with helping reveal the existence of the Wannsee Protocol, the 1942 conference during which Nazi officials met to coordinate the extermination of the Jews, which they termed "The Final Solution." Kempner cited a few Rosenberg diary excerpts in his memoir and in 1956 a German historian published entries from 1939 and 1940. But the bulk of the diary never surfaced. After his death in 1993, heirs to his estate agreed to forfeit his possessions to the U.S. holocaust museum, but that agreement hit road blocks and the diary was never found. However in 1999, when cleaning out Kempner's home in suburban Philadelphia, a man found 40 boxes of documents, including papers outlining the Nazi's "aggressive war against and the plundering, spoliation and the economic exploitation of the Soviet Union by the Nazi regime," according to a 2003 court filing. But the diary was not among the materials. "That was what we were looking for, that's what was so frustrating," said Robert Wittman, the founder of the FBI's Art Crime Team, and now a private art security consultant. In recent months, Wittman and his son, Jeffrey, helped ICE locate the diary in New York. The diary offers Rosenberg's recollections from the spring of 1936 to the winter of 1944, according to an analysis by the Holocaust museum. Most entries are written in Rosenberg's looping cursive, some on paper torn from a ledger book and others on the back of official Nazi stationery, according to a U.S. government analysis obtained by Reuters. "Although it is a reminder of a dark time, the Rosenberg Diary is important to our understanding of history," said U.S. Attorney Charles M. Oberly. "Our hope is that it will provide valuable insight to historians." Why do I mention this? It’s history. First hand accounts of what transpired during this horrible time of history… and maybe some insight into how such a tragic thing came to be. I’m pretty intrigued by what the content of those pages may be… but it also seems like it might be a big buildup to a disappointing book based on the descriptions that the guy is giving… so we shall see. I’m guessing that it’s not going to sell quite as well as Anne Frank’s Diary though. Just a hunch…

Anyway, that should do it for tonight. Gotta make some tough decisions about tomorrow night… do the work thing… or watch Game 7… hopefully it’ll work out so I can just do both… and the Spurs win the championship ring for the thumb… and maybe Tim Duncan retires… or maybe he stays for a few more trips. Who knows? That’s why we all play the game I guess… have a great game everybody!!!

Never Trust a Nun

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Well, it has been a pretty busy week trying to get things squared away on top of all the shoveling and ice road trucking, but I’m getting EXTREMELY excited. Not only for my forthcoming adventure to The City… but also for this Christmas weekend back home with the family in Utah. Heck, there’s even a Journey cover band playing New Year’s Eve up at Northstar, with fireworks at 9 PM (because it’s too damn cold to stay up until midnight) so even if I’m “stuck” here in Tahoe, I’ve got something fun to do for the evening… but we’ll see what’s crackin’ in Reno or maybe even the new home in San Francisco. I do have a lot of packing & planning to do though. I told most of my coworkers about the move… and they were a mix of stunned & controlled panic. They were obviously very supportive and understood the move… but I think they’re going to miss me a lot… if just for the amount of work that I did. Oh well… they’ll be fine… and I’m sure that a few will keep in touch. I hate to leave them right in the middle of busy season… but that’s just what the cards dealt & I had to go with it. Trust me, they would’ve done the same thing if they had an opportunity like this, no attachments, and they didn’t want to spend another winter here. So yeah… really excited… but enough about that. Here’s some world news…

Every Teacher’s Dream – Did anybody else have a teacher who would check the paper for lottery numbers right in the middle of class? Yeah, I had a math / biology teacher in high school who did that… and I’m pretty sure that if he had hit the lucky numbers, he probably would’ve told every single one of us to go fornicate with ourselves… and cash it in immediately. “Class dismissed, b**ches!!!” After nearly two weeks of suspense, a 64-year-old substitute teacher and single parent from Arizona claimed a $95.3 million Powerball jackpot. Sheila Verke, a Fort Mohave resident, presented the single-winning ticket to lottery officials in Phoenix on Monday. She opted to take a lump sum payment of $49.9 million, saying she plans to buy a recreational vehicle and travel the country… as opposed to buying a country and traveling in an RV. "It's going to change my life and the life of my children and my grandchildren and my friends," said Verke, who was joined by friends and financial advisers at a press conference. A single parent with two children and five grandchildren, Verke said she used a well-worn strategy to win the December 1 top prize -- picking a set of numbers and staying with them each week for years. Her winning combination of 5-10-11-12-20, with a Powerball number of 2, is a combination of her birthday and that of her two children, she said. "I picked these numbers at least 6-and-a-half years ago and stuck with them. Even if I had to gather quarters, nickels and dimes, I bought them," she told reporters. Verke bought the winning ticket at a Safeway supermarket in Fort Mohave, which is about 200 miles northwest of Phoenix. She is Arizona's third-largest winner of Powerball, a game played by residents in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Her odds of winning were more than 1 in 195 million… but now she’s RICH!!! Seriously… what would you do with $50 million? Besides give half of it to Uncle Sam because of taxes (and roads & education still suck)? The way I see it… it ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none… so I’d share the wealth with the friends & family… but I’d at least make them type me up a report on what they plan to do with the money. “So… Kiel, is it? What would you do with your request for… one million dollars? Really? You think you’re going to get that much? Okay, wow me.” “Come on bro! Just gimme the money so I can get a bigger house and a Lamborghini.” “Dude, you already have a home that was given to you… and you didn’t do sh*t for that either… and you can’t drive for sh*t, so I wouldn’t feel safe giving you the means for an Italian sportscar. I may as well hand you a live grenade. Besides… where are you gonna put the kid seats?” “F**k you man!” “Yeesh! That’s going in the report. Thank you… have a nice day, sir.” “I’m tellin’ mom.” “DO IT!!! I’ve already told her no because she would give half of hers to you.” So yeah… what would you guys do with a cut of that money? Maybe $100,000? Let’s hear what you’ve got in mind.

Never Trust a Nun - A Catholic nun with a reputation for gambling trips to Atlantic City was accused of embezzling more than $850,000 from a college where she oversaw the school's finances, officials said on Friday. Sister Marie Thornton, former vice president of finance at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, is charged with sending phony invoices to the school to pay off personal credit card bills and expenses, the U.S. Attorney's office said. The thefts occurred between 1999 and 2009, when Thornton resigned from the Catholic college, court documents said. She entered a plea of not guilty to a federal embezzlement charge. The college of some 5,000 students has come under fire from alumni and donors for never reporting the missing money to authorities and only mentioning the theft in its 2009 tax filing sent in February to the Internal Revenue Service. Iona officials issued a statement saying the school has implemented new financial oversight controls and recovered most of the missing funds. The nun had a reputation for visiting casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey, according to former Iona basketball coach Jeff Ruland (played for the 76ers back in the 90’s and I know that because I’m a nerd and have a few of his playing cards). The U.S. Attorney's office originally said the theft was more than $1.2 million but on Friday revised the amount to more than $850,000, saying it had originally miscalculated. Thornton's lawyer Sam Talkin said: "We think the case will be resolved in a manner fair to all the parties involved." So just to clarify… a nun was in charge of a university’s finances… and she was embezzling three times my annual salary… for a decade… and lost every cent in gambling… and the former NBA player turned basketball coach KNEW she was on the High Limit Slots… and it was only AFTER she left… that her replacement stumbled on something about it… and then they didn’t report it to anybody other than the IRS as a tax write-off? This is higher education, ladies & gentlemen. No wonder I consider college a waste of money. Hell, she’s obviously not even a good gambler.

I wonder how Jesus would decide her punishment… that’d be a pretty kick-ass show actually – “Judge Jesus”!!! “All rise for the Honorable Judge Jesus!” and he floats into the room wearing a black robe. Come on now! Tell me you wouldn’t DVR every single episode. If somebody’s talking out of turn yelling nonsense, then Jesus takes control of the situation with “Sir, if you don’t wait your turn, I’ll be forced to crucify you… literally.” “This is small claims court! You can’t be threatening me with crucifixion.” “Oh really? I bet you’re going to tell me that I can’t walk on water either… or feed this entire courtroom with a Happy Meal… or be legally DEAD for three days and then come back like I was taking a f**king nap. Now please sit down and be reverent… and if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to enjoy some water… oh wait, maybe it’s a fine Merlot now. (sip) Aaaah, praise me! Anyway, the plaintiff was saying…” What was my point? Oh yeah… don’t trust a nun.

Cost of Execution – Speaking of the “justice” system, the United States executed fewer people this year, in part because there is a shortage of the drug used in lethal injections and because executions are too expensive in tough economic times, a report released on Tuesday said. That’s right, apparently executions… are too expensive. Okay, prove it to me, hippies. The Death Penalty Information Center said in its annual report that executions decreased 12% this year and new death sentences stayed near the lowest level since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976. Texas led the nation with 17 of the 46 executions carried out this year in the United States. The total is down from 52 in 2009 and less than half the number put to death in 1999. "Whether it's concerns about the high costs of the death penalty at a time when budgets are being slashed, the risks of executing the innocent, unfairness, or other reasons, the nation continued to move away from the death penalty in 2010," Richard Dieter, the center's executive director and author of the report, said in a statement. One factor reducing or delaying executions is difficulty obtaining sodium thiopental, one of the drugs used in lethal injection executions, the Washington-based group said. Executions were postponed or canceled in five states due to a shortage of the drug, it said (saved by the bill?). Arizona imported some from Britain, where executions have been abolished, but Britain is now restricting the drug's exportation. New death sentences in 2010 will total 114, near the lowest level since 1976 when executions were authorized by the U.S. Supreme Court, and down two-thirds from their peak in 1996. There have been 1,234 executions in the United States since 1976, nearly half of those carried out (clap clap clap clap) deep in the heaaaart of Texas… and Virginia. Okay, I’m gonna save the “justice” system a LOT of money… and it’s probably just going to go directly to worthless lawyers… but it’s my public service for the day. Perhaps there are alternative methods of executing an individual that would be more cost effective than some apparently difficult to manufacture chemical compound. Sure, there are old standards like firing squad, electrocution, hanging, piñata and gas chamber… but even those can be expensive to design, build, and most definitely staff (though with this economy, probably not too difficult to fill). Even the Guillotine may be a cost effective method… but maybe you’re looking for something a little more humane and natural in the execution of a dastardly individual (for some reason). Well, you can always let Gravity do its thing if you have a cliff or tall building nearby. I’m just saying… there are different ways. Hell, if you REALLY wanted to help out with costs… have you ever considered Pay-Per-View? Maybe selling off a raffle for the role of Executioner? Seriously, you could MAKE money off this stuff. You may think me a morbid desensitized fool… but I know it’ll work… and I’m just coming up with great ideas here. Besides, do you know what’s a little more costly than even sodium thiopental? Putting them up in a one-star motel overfilled with felons & social misfits with three meals a day & plenty of exercise equipment. Anyway… I’m off my soap box now… but it’s silly to think that the reason that we’re not executing criminals is because of costs. Seriously? That’s an easy fix… especially in Texas.

Anyway, that’ll do it for today. I’ve got more packing and planning to do… so I guess I’ll leave you be. Can’t wait to see a lot of you this next week in Utah. We’ll have to start making some more solid plans as my weekend’s full but we definitely need to meet up for drinks & sushi or something. Have a great night everybody!!!

Are You Cussing With Me?

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

So last night, softball was cancelled. Well, we had to forfeit…because only like five people showed up. That’s one for each base and a pitcher with no outfielders or shortstop. Batting & base coaches would’ve been awkward with that scenario as well. I’m not saying it couldn’t have been done… but I’m pretty sure major leaguers couldn’t put up a real fight with five players in softball. Fast pitch maybe. Other than that, I’ve got a few prospective roommates stopping by to check out the apartment later today, which could prove interesting. I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Happy birthday to Bubbles!!! I’m sure she has an entire week of fun & debauchery already planned in celebration of this glorious event (as well as searching for apartments) in San Fran. Really not much else to elaborate on personally. Gorgeous weather the past few days have led to a few wandering walks around the neighborhood and such…but yeah, overall just pretty lazy the past few nights.

The other night, I watched a great kids movie called “Fantastic Mr. Fox” starring the voice talents of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and others. Basically, it’s the story of a chicken thief Fox (Clooney) who finds out that his wife (Streep) is pregnant…and so he retires to raise a family and become a journalist for the local paper (he’s a fox by the way, did I mention that?). Anyway a few years down the road, he starts to feel mediocre…and decides to get back into the thieving game by robbing three local farmers of chickens & alcoholic apple cider (mmm Hornsby’s). Well, this pisses the farmers off…and they declare war on Fox and his home…and start digging up everything around him, putting his friends & family in danger. So yeah, that’s the story…but it’s full of quick wit, quirkiness, and it’s PG despite a lot of “cussing” going around, which is awesome. Director Wes Anderson (“Life Aquatic”, “Royal Tenanbaums”, etc) does a great job…and it’s actually a kid’s movie that I enjoy watching. Can’t wait to show it to my niece & nephew when they come visit. If I can get Kairi and Vinny to say “Don’t cuss with me, daddy” to my brother, I could seriously die a happy man. Anyway, do yourself a favor and check out this movie. Blame the kids if you don’t want to feel judged for renting it.

Why Bill Murray is Awesome - Talking with GQ Magazine during promotion for "Get Low", a forthright comedic legend Bill Murray gave refreshingly blunt honest answers to questions about his past work and upcoming projects. Asked if a third "Ghostbusters" film was still in the works, Murray says "It's all a bunch of crock" and went on to explain: "Harold Ramis said, Oh, I've got these guys, they write on The Office, and they're really funny. They're going to write the next Ghostbusters. And they had just written this movie that he had directed. "Year One". Well, I never went to see "Year One", but people who did, including other Ghostbusters, said it was one of the worst things they had ever seen in their lives. So that dream just vaporized. That was gone. But it's the studio that really wants this thing. It's a franchise." Lame. Though I like the fact that he’s willing to say that another movie sucks… it’s sad that there won’t be a third Ghostbusters. It probably would’ve been ruined somehow anyway… and we always have the originals. He was also asked about doing the "Garfield" movies and said that he took the job for three reasons - the money (of course), the challenge of doing voice work, and a script he thought was co-written by Joel Coen (of the Coen brothers) but was actually co-written by Joel Cohen. When it came time to record though, "the lines got worse and worse". I get the two writers mixed up from time to time myself. It’s like Nick Nolte & Gary Busey, or any of the other Baldwin brothers, it happens. Glad somebody can finally say that they did it for the money. Next one to do so, Robert DeNiro for Rocky & Bullwinkle. Write it down. “$teve, why did you agree to star in the big screen adaptation of Tetris when your only previous experience was writing the script for the action-adventure mega blockbuster Jenga?” “Because they paid me a sh*t load of money. I made more from that movie, even after taxes & paying off that hooker, than I would’ve made in over a decade at my old job. You would’ve done it too. Gladly.” Now for something dirtier than children’s flicks…

Playboy Update - Mad that you can't see stuff like this at work without yet another sexual harassment class? Finally, something for those guys who say they read Playboy for the articles: a chance to prove it. Playboy Enterprises Inc. launched a website Tuesday that it swears will be safe to browse while at work, eliminating the need for men to throw themselves over their computer screen when the boss walks by. TheSmokingJacket.com will contain none of the nudity that makes Playboy.com NSFW — not suitable for work. Instead, it'll rely on humor to reach Playboy's target audience, men 25 to 34 years old, when they are most likely to be in front of a computer screen. "A lot of our audience logs on (to Playboy.com) after work and we saw that we were missing a golden opportunity to reach guys when they're online the most: when they're sitting at their desk, not working, sending e-mails to their friends," said Jimmy Jellinek, Playboy's editorial director…and apparently he has a lot more free time during his job than most of us. The site, named after one of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's favorite pieces of clothing (silkpajamas.com yourmomsundies.org were taken), won't include the long interviews or in-depth articles found in Playboy. Instead, it's meant to be decidedly un-serious. Or, in the parlance of its audience, ROFL — rolling on the floor, laughing. And cool, "basically a juke box of cool," said Jellinek. Among the original content visitors to the site will see is a list of signs that show a man has given up trying to attract women. They include wearing Velcro sneakers and pants with elastic waistbands — clothing Hef wouldn't be caught dead in, if he thought of wearing anything but his trademark jammies. The site will dip into the Playboy archives with photographs like those from the 1983 Playmate Playoffs, in which bathing suit-clad women competed in games such as a tug-of-war. There will be links to the kinds of things people are already e-mailing their friends, from funny moments on television shows such as "The Colbert Report" and "The Daily Show" to a Korean Parliament brawl that's been a big Web hit recently. "It's all about social currency," Jellinek said. "You want to be the first guy of your friends to send the funny joke, the crazy video ... You can be the coolest guy among your friends if you're the first person to circulate this information among them." "The ideal is to be ... the go-to site for those who are bored at work," said Matt Gibbs, the lead producer of the site. Because "Playboy" is just the kind of word that has companies putting up firewalls to keep their workers' minds on their jobs, the only thing in the name that suggests Playboy is behind the site are the bunny ears inside the 'o' in "TheSmokingJacket." The site will be updated continually in the hopes that men will return to it throughout the work day. Tim Hwang, who runs ROFLCon, an annual conference on the Internet culture, said it makes sense for Playboy to create a site for those who may not read the magazine or look at Playboy.com. "They're trying to craft another pillar for their business. This is a kind of effort away from their core audience to see if they can broaden their appeal." Playboy spokeswoman Theresa Hennessey said Playboy.com gets about 6 million unique visitors a month, and Jellinek said he will be pleased if TheSmokingJacket.com receives 1 million unique visitors a month. "The Playboy brand doesn't do small. (Amen!!!) Everything we do has to be big, has to be successful, has to be cool." So am I going to be checking this out at work? Hell no. I like my job… and I read them for the articles (my place of business was mentioned recently) so if they’re not going to be a part of this site, what’s the point? I crack myself up anyway. Then again, I kinda have an idea for my own magazine now… based on some interests of mine that could branch off from this blog (if people actually read magazines as opposed to were distracted by shiny pictures of hot women…right, Lilie?)

New Local Business Opportunities – Oakland, California has moved closer to becoming the first city in the nation to authorize wholesale pot cultivation. The Oakland City Council voted 5-2 with one abstention late Tuesday in favor of a plan to license four production plants where marijuana would be grown, packaged and processed. The vote came after more than two hours of public comment, with speakers divided between those who opposed the measure (largely on the grounds that it would put small medical marijuana growers out of business, not conservative types) and those who said it would generate millions of dollars for Oakland in taxes and sales and create hundreds of jobs. The plants would not be limited in size (one potential applicant for a license wants to open a plant that would produce over 21,000 pounds of pot a year) but they would be heavily taxed and regulated. Those vying for one of the four licenses would have to pay $211,000 in annual permit fees, carry $2 million worth of liability insurance and be prepared to devote up to 8% of gross sales to taxes. Proponents of the measure also touted the possibility of Oakland becoming the nation's cannabis capital, especially if California voters approve the legalization of recreational marijuana in November. "Do you want to be the "Silicon Valley of Cannabis?" said Jeff Wilcox, a local businessman who wants to build "AgraMed," a 7.4-acre plant with a bakery (oh yes), a lab and 100,000 square feet of cultivation space. But Stephen DeAngelo, executive director of Harborside Health Center, the largest medical marijuana dispensary in the world, said small growers were coming to him terrified that the ordinance would mean the end of their livelihoods (and private stashes). One of the co-sponsors of the ordinance, Rebecca Kaplan, said the ordinance would not take effect until January, giving the council time to come up with a plan for medium-sized growers. Councilwoman Nancy Nadel said she worried about quality of the product (sticky icky), wanted environmental protections and questioned why the council was voting on the measure now if it wasn't going to take effect until January. She must be new & unaware of how slow, tedious & completely retarded the whole of government bureaucracy is. The measure will go before the council one more time for a final vote, but the outcome isn't expected to change. So what do you think? Could Oakland be the new Silicon Valley of Cannabis? It’s conveniently located in northern California where they pretty much have the infrastructure already established (though illegally) and plenty of out-of-work potheads and entrepreneurs ready to work. They’d be taxed the hell out of to allegedly help the rest of the state. It could be a good business… depending on certain other legislations down the road. Don’t get too excited just yet though, stoners. Even if all this goes through, AND they legalize recreational use, AND you can afford their uber-taxed product… your job will still have drug tests and that probably won’t change, even if years down the road there’s a national referendum or something. It’s like saying you can’t show up to work drunk. Hmm… maybe this industry needs an entrepreneur like myself that is only satisfied with a superior product and doesn’t get high on his own supply. Then again, there are a few other ideas that I’m batting around to get me into that upper echelon of taxation…

Bank Robbing Monthly – For the last little while, there have been a number of bank robbing updates. What if there was a magazine with step-by-step breakdowns of both successful & disastrous attempts, in-depth interviews with legendary thieves & actors who portray them, elaborate workout routines to keep you limber and adaptable to any situation, lock-picking exercises, new & surprising non-lethal techniques, and of course I throw in a bunch of three-quarter naked women to keep everybody entertained? Would you subscribe? Of course I can get retired criminals to meet for interviews…or at the very least webchat from a country with no extradition treaty. You don’t think so? Well, that’s like… your opinion, man. Anyway, in the meantime, I’ll just have to settle for my own admiration. New York City's bouquet bandit has a green thumb. Police said Tuesday that a man wanted for robbing a Manhattan bank while armed with a bouquet of flowers has struck before — using a potted plant. On Monday, police released a security photo of a man holding fresh flowers that were neatly bundled in pink tissue paper and plastic. Hidden inside the arrangement was a note demanding $50 and $100 bills and a message for the teller, "Don't be a hero." On July 10th, police say the same man appeared at another Manhattan bank, holding a threatening note under a leafy plant and handing it to a teller. He reached over the counter grabbed the cash before he fled, leaving the plant behind. He is still at large. Not a bad setup. You distract the teller with the guise of a special delivery from a loved one…or at the very least a great smelling error in their favor. Simple note: Don’t make a scene because I’ve got gardening shears and a wicked weed killing spray, big bills, non-sequential, enjoy the flowers as a memento, thank you very much. I’m wondering if the pot or the flowers or even the note can be traced back to a place of purchase, or where he works…but I’m sure he’s thought about all that ahead of time. All in all, I give it a B+. For one, he is still at large, nobody got hurt (except maybe a few wilting hearts broken), simple plan, small crew, and he got the money. Really, just great execution. Sure it doesn’t have the flash & pizzazz or the serious monetary value worthy of a big budget Hollywood movie…but did you ever notice that most of those movie that are based on true stories, they get caught? Maybe not in the movie… but the real life version, they get caught…and they write a book about the experience while in prison…and that’s why it becomes a movie. Anyway, at least he leaves behind a little something to help with the emotional nature of robbery – a pretty plant for some lucky lady to take home.

BRM: Part Deux - A man wearing a surgical mask and medical-style latex gloves robbed a bank in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Police said the man entered the Bank of America branch Saturday morning, jumped the counter and grabbed some cash. Police said the man didn't show a weapon and apparently fled on foot. Police haven't said how much money was stolen. The man was described as white, wearing a green polo shirt, tan shorts and black shoes… in addition to the surgical mask & latex gloves. This… gets a D+ from me. He did get away… but it was basically a snatch-and-run. He probably made away with $34 in ones & fives. Strippers make more in two T-Pain songs’ time & at least use a fake name like Sapphire and distracting gyrating movements when they rob you. This gentleman approaches the counter dressed like a golf-playing tourist paranoid of SARS and just lounges at the counter, grabs for what he could, and then runs off. It could’ve been worse though. He could’ve tried to take everybody hostage or something. “(loud muffled jibberish)” “What?” “(louder muffled jibberish)” “I can’t hear you through the mask, sir. Do you have an account with us?” Lifts up the mask negating any reasoning behind bringing it along for the ride, “I said put the money in the bag.” “What bag sir?” “This f**king bag.” “Sir, that’s a bandana.” “What? Dammit!!! Wrong pocket. Dammit!!! The other one’s empty. It must still be back… never mind. Just put the money in the bindle and nobody gets hurt. Damn gloves… all they do is make my hands sweaty.” “Here you are sir. Anything else?” “You only put like a hundred bucks in there.” “Sir, if you want your ‘loot’ wrapped up in a bandana there are certain limitations to what…” “JUST PUT THE MONEY IN TH… (thunk)” He’s pistol whipped from behind by the security guard who’s had enough of his crap. No pizzazz, no flare, may end up on Funniest Police Videos or something like that with narration like “Look at this character!” and a few stupid puns thrown in. D+ all the way…

X-Men Update - Jennifer Lawrence, the star of the Sundance-winning indie drama "Winter's Bone", has been cast as a young Mystique in Fox's "X-Men: First Class" says Heat Vision. Kevin Bacon is also confirmed to be playing the villain, but details of the role are being kept secret Rumor has it that it might be Sebastian Shaw. Don’t know who that is? Sigh… then why are we talking? Anyway, Lawrence joins confirmed cast members James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alice Eve (Emma Frost), Caleb Landry Jones (Banshee) and Lucas Till (Havok). Filming kicks off late summer in London. Hey, I like it when young up-and-coming actresses get their chance to make some mother f**king money with comic book & video game flicks. She can even pull off the young Rebecca Romijn-Stamos with eyes like that. Remember Angelina before Lara Croft? All those little indie flicks. You never watched “Gia”! Even when you found out that she was naked in it! And yeah… she’s totally naked too. You still haven’t seen “Girl, Interrupted” and she won a f**king Academy Award for that… AND Winona Ryder’s in it. When did you find out about Angelina? Tomb Raider!!! You probably watch “Gone in 60 Seconds” and “Mr & Mrs Smith” whenever they’re on TV (and they’re ALWAYS on TV somewhere). I kid you not, I'm watching her & Brad on FX RIGHT NOW. Admit it, you are too. Are you going to see “Salt” this weekend? I’m just saying, sometimes actresses like this hit it big after a few indies. Do I think Jennifer Lawrence is the next Angelina? Haven’t seen anything she’s done. Won’t even speculate. I’m just saying… she could be huge. Absolute worst-case, she’s probably be on the cover of Maxim soon in blue body paint… and I refuse to hate on that.

Lesbian Werewolf Update – Speaking of indie flicks with hotties, so remember how a few years ago I told you about this lesbian werewolf movie called “Jack & Diane” that was going to star Ellen Page & Olivia Thirlby from “Juno” but then… it didn’t happen that way? Yes, interest was waning in this project that was loaded with sweet, sticky, funky potential (but would probably get ruined somehow by an overly artsy director or something) until I read this. The Aussie singer who I just can’t get out of my head, Kylie Minogue (Cammy in “Street Fighter”), has signed on to play a heavily tattooed lesbian in the teen romance drama "Jack and Diane" reports The NY Post. The story follows two teenage girls in New York City - the charmingly innocent Diane (Juno Temple of “Year One”) whose affection manages to pierce the heart of the tough and closed off Jack (Jena Malone, who was raised her in Tahoe, played a young Jodie Foster in “Contact” and played the sister in “Into the Wild”). About to leave the country, Diane struggles to keep their love alive but hides the fact her newly awakened sexual desire has given her werewolf-like visions. Riley Keough also stars. A source tells the paper "Kylie does have one love scene where she kisses a girl. Her fans will be surprised to see her in this role, but her performance is good." Giggidy! Bradley Rust Gray ("The Exploding Girl") directs and shooting aims to kick off this summer. Minogue's last major role was in the "Doctor Who" 2007 Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned" and I’m pretty sure she still tours. Anyway, while we wait for the movie (it has at least two of my ten key words), just enjoy the pictures. I plan on it.

On that note, I think I’ll call it a day. Gotta get ready for visitors that may move in. Again, I’ll keep you posted on these interesting events… and others that seem to pop up unexpectedly. Again, happy birthday Bubbles!!! I’ll be sure to sing you a little song later. Have a great night everybody!!! Oh...and tell me one thing, do you have any idea why I love this picture so much...and want it hanging in my home, just as a conversation starter... and to see if anybody notices... Thank you again!!!

The Other Kind of Stoned

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Not a whole lot the past few days. Been watching “Ghost Adventurers” on Travel Channel, which for those of you who don’t know, is basically three dudes who lock themselves into allegedly haunted places across the world overnight…and basically try to contact and/or pick fights with ghosts. It’s mildly amusing to me. They get these white noise blurbs on digital recorders and…sometimes they try to stretch it out into something. For example, they’ll be in an abandoned hospital in East LA…and be yelling down a hallway “Are there any ghosts here?” and their recorder will pick up some quick random noise for half a second. Then they look at the camera all excited, “DID YOU HEAR THAT?” “Oh my God, dude. That was totally a woman screaming.” “Yeah, that was definitely a woman’s voice down the hallway, screaming possibly singing.” Then they’ll replay it on enhanced audio…and I think sometimes they forget that they’re in East LA and that sounds like somebody using the horn of their automobile two miles away. Occasionally there are some real interesting things that happen…but yeah, it’s a little overdramatic & therefore hilarious to me sometimes, much like a soap opera. I still watch it though. That stuff intrigues me. That may explain my fascination with New Orleans a little bit too, besides the food, culture, architecture, women, music, environment, women, history, hospitality and ugh… there was one more thing. Oh yeah, the women. Anyway, check the show out if you want…or maybe these movies.

The other night I watched “Shutter Island” which is a horror flick from director Martin Scorsese (“Goodfellas”, “The Departed”, etc) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo among others. The story is of a Boston detective (DiCaprio) who is sent to an isolated mental institution island with his new partner (Ruffalo) to investigate the disappearance of a “guest” in the 1950’s. From the beginning, the staff seems very secretive & non-compliant to their requests for information…and it really doesn’t help that there are a lot of rumors about the place…or that the man responsible for the detective’s wife’s death is allegedly an inmate in their psychotic prison ward. The way that the story is told is quite slow, methodical & bone chilling…which is pretty much what you want in a psychological thriller like this. However, have you ever watched a movie…and had it figured out in the first ten minutes…and it goes on for two hours trying to throw you off? Yeah, me neither. I was just asking. I’d still recommend checking out this movie. It’s pretty good.

Last night, I watched a movie that was pretty different in a lot of ways. It was “The Crazies” starring Timothy Olyphant & Radha Mitchell. Set in Ogden Marsh, Iowa, it’s about a local small-town sheriff (Olyphant) and his pregnant doctor wife (Mitchell) who are caught up in some crazy sh*t. Opening scene: You’ve seen the commercial, I’m sure. Baseball game, whole town is there, guy wanders into the outfield with a shotgun, sheriff confronts him, guy looks at shotgun awkwardly, raises it, sheriff has to put him down. Best part about the movie, it really doesn’t slow down much from there. The next day, a man randomly burns his house down with his wife & son inside…and then while locked in the town drunk cell, he starts going really batty. Then the government comes in to start cracking down on this behavior…and it basically turns into “28 Days Later” with rednecks. Pretty good little horror flick. If you’re into that stuff, I’d recommend it. It’s not completely stupid like most of them…but then again, don’t look too hard into the plot at some points too. You know, standard horror protocol applies. Here’s the news…

Denver Update - Police responding to reports of a man leaping between cars in a Colorado supermarket parking lot didn't need a detailed description of the suspect. Boulder Police Sgt. Fred Gerhardt said witnesses on Wednesday reported a man was dressed as a leprechaun and pretending to shoot at people with his fingers (or as the kids are calling it these days, “fingerbanging”). Witnesses told police the man may have made obscene gestures (“Top o’ da mornin’ love. Would you like to touch my shalalee?”). Gerhardt said they likely called police because the man "was acting bizarre." Officers did not find anyone matching the description of the leprechaun (no redheads in Boulder?). Gerhardt said this is the first time Boulder police have received a complaint about a leprechaun…which having been to Denver’s St Patty’s Day Parade, I seriously doubt. I wonder if it’s some kind of advertisement. You know me, always looking for the angle in a story like this. Think about it. Where did it happen? A grocery store. Then you have some fingerbanging leprechaun in the parking lot saying “You’ll never get me Lucky Charms now. It’s a shame too, cuz they’re on sale in the cereal aisle, pkyoo pkyoo (that’s him firing his pistols)” and then running off to the next family. Good show, General Mills. Good show.

Dolly Parton: Fairy Godmother - If the superstardom Miley Cyrus has experienced by age 17 sounds like a fairy tale, maybe there's a good reason. "I'm her fairy godmother," exclaimed Dolly Parton after they recently performed together at Dollywood. Parton has known Miley since she was a baby. Her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, met Parton in the early 1990s when he shot to fame with "Achy Breaky Heart." He credits Parton for inspiring his acting career (his what?) and is thankful that she has been a role model for Miley. "It's great that she has someone like Dolly to idolize, someone to look up to," said Billy Ray in a recent phone interview. "Having that type of influence in her life, it's so amazing and so special." In late May, Miley, Billy Ray and Kenny Rogers joined Parton in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., to shoot the hour-long TV special "Dolly Parton Celebrates 25 Years of Dollywood," which airs Saturday on the Hallmark Channel. The special is filled with performances, glimpses of the theme park and unscripted moments between the stars, including a part where Parton and the Cyruses play guitar and talk in an attic (completely unscripted). It also includes tributes from friends — Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, and others. "There are a lot of wonderful things," she said. "It shows the park really great, and the audience and all the people that work here, so we've really covered it in every respect." One highlight featured Parton and Miley turning the song "Jolene" into a spirited duet, with the two fighting over the same man. "I was blown away when they did 'Jolene,'" Billy Ray said. "It was amazing, it was just a moment of going, 'Wow, listen to how great they sound together.'" Parton said she considers Miley to be like one of her nieces or a little sister. "I'm just real proud of her. She does not need my advice, but she's often asking for information and advice, and I tell her what I know, but I think the girl's doing all right without me." I sense a spin-off coming out soon titled “Cinder-Ellie May” starring those two…but I’m wait for CMT or the Disney Channel to call me for the script. What’s that? Never thought you’d hear me talk about Hannah Montana on my blog again since she ransacked my dreams & I gave her career advice? Apparently you were wrong. Don’t worry. She’s not going to be the next Adriana Lima or Megan Fox on this blog…by which I mean, appearing sporadically in obsessive updates until she marries some douche who doesn’t know how to shave. See, I’m like that stupid Dane Cook movie, what’s it called? Oh yeah, all of them…but specifically the one where I’m good luck to any chick I have sex with… only there’s no sex involved, it’s just a stupid blog. You know, I’m nothing like that movie. Why would you even say that? And Dane Cook is hilarious in small doses. How dare you?

Stoning? Really? – Update from the Middle East, a realm of the planet that I just don’t understand at all. The Iranian government has announced that it will NOT stone to death Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani for adultery. I repeat. The government has announced that it will NOT STONE A WOMAN TO DEATH FOR ADULTERY. As in, they were originally planning to…but are deciding another form of execution…for adultery. It's not clear whether the death sentence against the 43-year-old mother has been lifted…or whether she still faces execution by another method (possibly the chopping block or being torn limb from limb by Arabian horses). Ashtiani, a widow, was convicted in May 2006 of having an "illicit relationship outside marriage" with two men (simultaneously?) and then punished with 99 lashes. Her case was reopened after a court suspected her of murdering her husband but she was acquitted. A death penalty was handed down on the adultery charge, however, based on a "judge's knowledge," Britain's Guardian writes. Remember, she already got 99 lashes…and THEN was sentenced to death because…wait, what? Judge’s knowledge? Was he one of the two guys? I’m confused. News of the medieval punishment that Ashtiani faced generated international opposition and pressure on Tehran. A statement by the Iranian Embassy in London denied that stoning was ever considered, calling such reports "false news." The Guardian also reports that 12 Iranian women and three men imprisoned for adultery still face execution by stoning. Let’s take a moment…and really think about some of the liberties that we have as Americans…or really anywhere outside of what I like to call, the Crazy Oily Sandbox. Now, it’s been a while for me since I’ve felt the warm soothing touch of a woman (please don’t look back in the blog to see how long…because it’d only make us both cry a little) but in Iran, having never been married, I would be damn near a 30-year old virgin…or face getting bludgeoned to death instead of blue balls. No wonder everybody’s so f**king cranky over there. I could see them doing some kind of cruel punishment where a guy gets a dozen lashes while a belly dancer performs in front of him. What was his crime? Masturbating. I guess it’s still better than beheading (which in this case would be more like circumcision). So… when the legal system gets you down here in the States, just remember, it could always be worse. And to all the single ladies out there, I think that we should celebrate our sexual freedoms whenever possible…like say, 8 o’clock Wednesday, my place, bring some wine & we’ll watch the sunset… and maybe get the other kind of “stoned” while watching a movie. Sound good? You know it does.

Meanwhile in Vietnam… - More international “craziness”, an acupuncturist who claims she can detect a man's virginity based on a small dot on the ear has become a minor celebrity in Vietnam, where she is credited with helping to free three convicted rapists from prison. Wait, wait, let’s read the story first, then jump to judgment. Traditional medicine practitioner Pham Thi Hong started lobbying for the men's release, pleading their case all the way to the president, because she believes all three men are virgins and therefore could not be guilty of rape. "They all had small red spots on the back of their ears," said Hong, 54. "The spots should have disappeared if they had had sex. My many years of experience (giggidy?) told me that these men did not have sex before." Her claims are unusual even for a country where acupuncture and traditional medicine are still common remedies, but Hong's determination to have the case reopened — even threatening to light herself on fire — led to prosecutors re-examining the case. The convictions eventually were suspended due to flaws by initial investigators. "Thanks to her efforts, investigators revisited the case which otherwise could have been buried," said Nong Thi Hong Ha (no relation), a lawyer for one of the freed men. Hong says she discovered the spot on Nguyen Dinh Kien's ear the first time he visited her for treatment four years ago. He was brought to the hospital from prison, where he was serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted of gang raping a 20-year-old woman in 2000. After seeing the spot on Kien's ear, Hong believed his insistence that he was innocent. She later examined his two alleged accomplices (the other alleged gangbangers) and began a campaign for their release. Eventually, President Nguyen Minh Triet ordered that the case be re-examined. Investigators who revisited the case discovered flaws, including the fact that testimonies of witnesses indicating their innocence were not included in the case's files, according to the local Pioneer newspaper. The three men, having served 10 years in jail, were released in January. Vietnamese newspapers have dedicated profiles to Hong and her virginity test, crediting her with helping to free the men while not expressing any skepticism of her ability. Earlier this week, she went on an online chat on Pioneer newspaper where readers expressed their "great admiration" for her efforts. She says she was first taught how to determine if a man has ever had sex by feeling their pulse (and if he blew a load in his pants, then the answer was no). She later developed the ear-spot method on her own. She says the spot will only disappear after heterosexual intercourse and is not affected by gay sex or masturbation. "I never thought that one day I would use this method to help the three men prove their innocence," said Hong, while treating a patient in her home on the outskirts of Hanoi. Her virgin-detecting claims have drawn skepticism from other traditional medicine practitioners, who work with needles, herbs and other methods using centuries-old techniques to manipulate energy, or chi, in the body. "I have never heard of this method before," said Nguyen Van Hao, 60, an acupuncturist who has practiced for 14 years. "From the medical point of view, it's impossible to determine whether a man has had sex or not by feeling the pulse or examining the red spot on their ears (now if you’ll excuse me, I have to cure this woman’s consumption with gingko and leeches)." Hong, however, said she's convinced her method works after years of testing it on her students. Hong says her reputation has now prompted other convicted rapists to seek her help in appealing their cases. "I'm not planning to launch a campaign to clear innocent people who were falsely convicted of rape. But I'm willing to help people to prove their innocence, if they really are (paying in cash)." Okay, now you can pass judgment. So the three rapists were actually released because of poor police work…which sadly does happen. However, this would’ve never come to light…if the President of Vietnam…wasn’t convinced that this 54-year old woman…could determine if a man was still in possession of his V-card…by a freckle or a spider bite behind his ear. When you go home tonight, check behind your son’s ear. What’s that? Your six-year old doesn’t have the red dot? Grill him about who he’s been playing doctor with…because that child’s been adultering. Oh, your son still has the red dot? Then REALLY grill him about who he’s been playing doctor with…because he may be why your towels are no longer soft…or it may be Timmy from down the street. Yeah, kind of ridiculous…but hey, at times like this, I think WWJD? He wouldn’t judge them, right?

Jesus Update – Ever seen the episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia titled “The Gang Exploits a Miracle”? If not, you should. It’ll make this story even funnier. A Catholic priest in New Hampshire plans to visit a Candia water park to see if he can see the face of Jesus in the park's lifeguard flag. The owner of the Liquid Planet Water Park said that when the flag was unfurled earlier this season staff saw what looked to them like a shadowy image of Jesus Christ. Kevin Dumont said he had been praying for a miracle to improve business. Since the flag was opened, there have been a string of perfect days and business is up 200%. The New Hampshire Union Leader said Father Volney "Von" DeRosia from St. Joseph's Church in Epping will visit the park Thursday to try to determine if the image could have been intentionally fabricated. Wow, business has TRIPLED since Jesus appeared on the lifeguard’s flag? Hmm… There may be something to this. Maybe they haven’t exploited it enough. Maybe if it’s confirmed, the priest can bless the water…and then it’ll be Liquid Planet Holy Water Park. They could even open a sacramental wine bar next to the adult pool…which they top off with a hard plastic cover in the evenings so that they can enjoy the blood of Christ…and then dance on water to “Jesus Walks” or something. Hey now, I’m just throwing out ideas here. Patent pending, Mr. Dumont. Anyway, just goes to show that Jesus loves water parks…just like everybody else.

Dino Update – Also in the picturesque Northeast, in Post Mills, Vermont, an interesting question is raised? Does a 25-foot-tall, 122-foot-long dinosaur need a permit to avoid extinction? That's the unlikely dilemma posed by "Vermontasaurus," a whimsical sculpture thrown together with scrap wood by a Vermont man. The oddity now faces opposition from neighbors and regulatory challenges from government entities that he fears could force him to dismantle it. It's art, not edifice, says Brian Boland. "They should leave me alone. It's a piece of artwork," he said. Boland, 61, is a former teacher, hot-air balloon designer and pilot who runs the Post Mills Airport, a 52-acre airfield. Last month, he decided to turn a pile of broken wooden planks and other detritus on the edge of his property into something more. Boland says the idea was to build a sculpture that could be a community gathering place, with no admission and no commercial element (What? No money? That’s un-American). Using a dinosaur model as his inspiration, he put out a call for volunteer helpers and went to work. He cut a huge pine tree into four pieces and, using a back hoe, planted them as the bases of the four feet. Then, over nine days and using dozens of volunteers, the ersatz sculpture began taking shape. A splintered two-by-four here, the rotted belly of a guitar there, half a ladder from a child's bunk bed here, Boland and his volunteers worked under basic ground rules: No saws, no rulers and no materials other than what was in the scrap pile. Also, anything nailed into place couldn't be removed. And nothing was to be level or plumb. What emerged from the random carpentry was a Smithsonian-sized slice of roadside Americana. "It's an interesting piece of art, but personally, I don't find it all that appealing," said neighbor Mary Wilson, 54, who lives down the street and wishes it could be removed. On the poster Boland circulated to seek volunteers, "it looked pretty neat. But when you look at it now, it looks like a messy piece of art." Dirk Koppers, 40, who lives next door to Wilson, said he loves it. "It shows such creativity. You just don't go to places and be surprised anymore. Everything's always so controlled or so governed." Speaking of which, government officials are not amused. The Town of Thetford told Boland his sculpture was really a structure (akin to a shed or a gazebo) and that he needed a $272 permit for it. The state Division of Fire Safety, meanwhile, told Boland that if he couldn't get a structural engineer to attest to the sculpture's safety, he could not allow people to congregate underneath it. Boland has since wound a strap around the legs to keep people from walking under the belly of the beast. "There's enough weight there that if it collapsed, somebody would probably be hurt," said Michael Desrochers, regional manager for the Division of Fire Safety. The Vermont Natural Resources Board weighed in with a notice of alleged violation that said the wooden dinosaur was a substantial change to an existing development and may therefore need another permit, at a minimum of $150, under an ultra-restrictive state land-use law called Act 250. The state will decide this week if such a permit is required, according to Boolie Sluka, District 2 assistant coordinator for the Board. Boland says he's been told he might have to dismantle it entirely. In the interim, he has won cheers from passers-by, some of whom drive up to take pictures. It was an onlooker from Boston who dubbed it "Vermontasaurus," which Boland has adopted as the structure's name. On Thursday, Peg Perkins, 77, of Gaysville (yes, a real city), and cousin Diana LeClair, 59, of Hardwick, pulled up next to it, cameras in hand. "It's very, very ingenious," said LeClair. I like it. I hope it gets to stay. When I visit Vermont for the first time, I hope I get my picture taken with Vermontasaurus. I think Ben & Jerry should step in and help out, maybe a tie-in with a local flavor or something, like the Vermonster. I think they’re done with my suggestions though. I told them to help Save the Tatas a few years back with a special human mother’s milk ice cream…and for some reason, they said it wasn’t cost effective. I worked out the kinks in my plan…and then I found out what a cease & desist order was. I’m sure they’re nice guys and it’s all lawyer communication… but hey, this is a little easier. Save up donations with the factory tours there in Vermont for a few weeks…and anything more than the $272 permit costs for Vermontasaurus, donate to the Susan Komen foundation. There, free fundraising advice from Dr Love. You’re welcome.

REAL Killer Whale - Scientists have discovered an ancient whale whose bite ripped huge chunks of flesh out of other whales about 12 million years ago… and the best part, they've named it after the author of "Moby-Dick." The prehistoric sperm whale grew to between 13 and 18 meters (up to 60 feet) long, not unusual by today's standards. But unlike modern sperm whales, Leviathan melvillei, named for Herman Melville, sported vicious, tusk-like teeth some 36 centimeters (14 inches) long. The ancient beast evidently dined on other whales, researchers said in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. They report finding a skull of the beast in a Peruvian desert. The researchers named it in tribute to the 19th-century author and his classic tale of the great white whale, which includes frequent digressions on natural history that punctuate the action…yet perhaps now prove prophetic. "There is a chapter about fossils," one of the paper's authors, Olivier Lambert of the Natural History Museum in Paris, said. "Melville even mentions some of the fossils that I studied for my PhD thesis." Anthony Friscia, a paleontologist at UCLA, who wasn't involved in the discovery, said scattered finds of huge fossilized teeth had long hinted at the ancient whale's existence. But without a skull to fit them in, the creature's shape, size and feeding habits remained a mystery. "The fact that they have found the entire jaw — well, almost the entire skull — is what's pretty unprecedented," he said. Friscia said the ancient beasts "were the killer whales of their time, although on a much grander scale. They were close to the biggest things around." Friscia also said he thought the choice of a name was fantastic. "You gotta love any time you get a nod to literature in taxonomy. It was a big whale, so why not?" Not so sure about mixing allegorical tales with my vicious gargantuan bloodthirsty prehistoric beasts… but hey, I hear Jurassic Park was a book once. (FYI – I did actually read both Moby Dick AND Jurassic Park back in the day) Anyway, just wanted to nerd out real quick.

That’ll do it for today. I hope this proved educational and entertaining for you. If so, let me know. If not, please leave comments as to how I can make this blog better…and then kindly go tell somebody who cares. Softball tonight. What? That’s right, it’s Tuesday nights now, which frees up my Wednesdays for basketball in Incline Village if I so choose. Yay summer! Have a great day everybody!!!

The Bullies Are BACK

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Happy Day!!! I’m excited for the weekend (though I still have quite the workweek ahead of me first), my mom & dad call me everyday to make sure I’m doing okay, the weather hasn’t been too horrible & it’s still gorgeous here, and while reminiscing about our epic two-day drive across four of the biggest states in the Union last winter, Filly said “U make Texas seem fun” which very well may be the nicest thing that anybody has ever said to me. Those of you who have driven across the entirety of the Lone Star State know exactly what I’m talking about. Other than that, a bunch of TV show that I didn’t watch a whole lot of had their series finales (24, Lost, Law & Order, etc) while Playboy went 3-D. You can guess which one interested me more. So yeah, not a whole lot else going on for me. For that, I apologize. I’ll be sure to get out there and do more. Maybe when the temp goes above 40, I’ll get out there and try the Frisbee Golf course a few blocks from my apartment. Why? Why the hell not? Maybe I’ll meet a few hippie chicks and get a Frisbee Foursome going by the back nine. Anyway, here’s the news…

Tallest American - Guinness World Records has recognized a Minnesota man as the tallest man in the United States. The Guinness World Record Association measured Rochester's Igor Vovkovinskiy (voh-kov-IN'-ski) at 7 feet, 8.33 inches tall during NBC's "The Dr. Oz Show" on Monday. He edged out Norfolk, Va., sheriff's deputy George Bell by a third of an inch. The 27-year-old Vovkovinskiy is originally from Ukraine but moved to Minnesota with his mother when he was 7 years old for treatment at the Mayo Clinic for a pituitary disease that spurred his rapid growth (did I mention he’s 7’8”?). Vovkovinskiy now attends the Minnesota School of Business and is pursuing a degree in paralegal studies. Guinness says the world's tallest man is Turkey's Sultan Kosen. He measures in at 8 feet, 1 inch tall. So that’s cool that Igor’s the tallest American…but the most gripping thing about that story…was that there’s a sheriff’s deputy in Norfolk who’s f**king HUGE!!! I’m glad they kinda warned me. I’m not sure how I would react if I get pulled over and am asked for my license & registration by a behemoth. (Andre the Giant voice) “License & registration please.” “Sure thing officer. You must have some kind of cold to sound like JESUS CHRIST!!! (As I scurry over into the passenger seat)” “Sir, please calm down. (sniff sniff) What’s that smell?” “What do you think it is? I mean… I’m tall but… holy crap, dude. Is your squad car a drop top?” “Hahaha, license & registration please.” “Here you go. Wow. So… do like your handcuffs even go around your wrists? Do you still have a standard issue pistol? I’m thinking it’d look like a toy gun in those banana hands. When there’s a riot, do they just send you in to say ‘Everybody MOVE!!!’? Can you just pick up the back of a car if they try to drive away? Who makes your uniform? I’ll bet the donut shop just cries whenever they see you walking up.” “Sir, please shut the f**k up.”

U3-X Personal Mobility Device – My mom sent me this one…and so I thought I’d share it with you. Yeah, we've seen a self-balancing unicycle before, right? No? Okay then, well the brand new U3-X from Honda takes it to another level. A creepy-sterile, awesomely futuristic Honda level, to be precise. What makes the U3-X particularly interesting is it has the regular large wheel of a unicycle, but that wheel is actually made up of several small wheels in a series, which can rotate independently, meaning that the device can go forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally, all being controlled with a simple lean. Honda credits its ASIMO research for this multi-directional capability, though I don’t see it (ASIMO is the biped robot that I’m sure you’ve all seen on South Park) but far be it from me to discredit an excuse to keep up the good work on the ASIMO front. Right now the "experimental model" of the U3-X gets a single hour of battery and weighs under 22 pounds, with a seat and foot rests that fold into the device for extra portability. No word of course on when the thing might make it to market, but Honda plans to show it off at the Tokyo Motor Show. The link has video…but yeah, it’s a unicycle segway. Speaking of South Park, remember the episode where Mr. Garrison builds a fuel-efficient & inexpensive alternative to the airlines? Doesn’t this kind of bear a striking resemblance to it? Just a thought.

Mugshot of the Week - Police say a suspect in a Colorado home invasion had the evidence written all over his face. A tattoo on the upper lip of 20-year-old Anthony Brandon Gonzales led to his arrest last week in the home invasion of an Elvis impersonator in Pueblo County (yes, an Elvis impersonator…in Pueblo, Colorado). A witness told police that one of the invaders had "East Side" tattooed on his upper lip. Gonzales also has a "13" tattooed on his chin in the shape of a goatee. According to an affidavit, the tattoos were visible even though Gonzales was wearing a mask. Gonzales was already in jail on a separate drug charge. Police have now charged him with the April burglary, too. Sgt. Eric Bravo said his distinctive tattoo led to the charge, saying, "it's hard to miss him." Indeed it is…and that’s why he gets the prestigious Mugshot of the Week.

Water Fight - What started out as an innocent squirt gun fight between children turned into a potentially dangerous situation for a Woonsocket, Rhode Island neighborhood. Firefighters on Sunday responded to reports of a strong smell of ammonia in the basement of a Grove Street home. Investigators told WPRI-TV they found a smoking 7-gallon barrel of sodium hydroxide, prompting a hazardous materials team response and the evacuation of three homes. Sodium hydroxide, commonly used to clear drains, reacts strongly with water, creating an odor and heat. Investigators determined that water dripped into the barrel during a kids' water gun fight in the basement. The chemical was removed and no one was hurt. The homeowner thinks the chemical was in the basement when he bought the home…along with the Swedish-made penis enlarger pump found on an adjacent shelf. “That’s not my bag, baby.” It just goes to show, parents have to watch their kids…even when they’re locked down in the basement. “Dammit, you’re getting water all over the house. Why don’t you kids go down in the basement to play?” What’s the worst that could happen? Apparently, hazmat can be called to your house. God I want to play with a Super Soaker now.

Sinatra Update - Martin Scorsese tells The Hindu that the script is ready for his planned feature film about Frank Sinatra's life, and he's already got in mind whom he wants to tackle the two key roles. "I've had it in mind for a long time. Even the initial script is ready. I'm yet to spot the actor who can bring back Frank Sinatra alive on screen. My choice is Al Pacino, and Robert DeNiro as Dean Martin" says Scorsese. The names are surprising as several other high-profile names have been previously linked to the role, with Johnny Depp the studio's favorite while George Clooney is the choice of Sinatra's own daughter Nancy. Also, let’s face it, it’s a Scorsese flick, so it’s kind of assumed that Leonardo DiCaprio would play the role. Universal Pictures is producing the biopic which is expected to show the darker side of the singer along with the more musical side. This may just all be a ploy by Martin to get what he wants…but hey, you know me. I’m all for Pacino & DeNiro. I’m just not sure that they can pull off the younger version of Sinatra & Dino. If so, then not only should they get Academy Awards…but the makeup team should get them too. Depp? Clooney? DiCaprio? McLovin? I’m pretty interested in this project…and how it will be cast…but please keep in mind, we’re talking about the guy who cast Willem Dafoe as Jesus in “The Last Temptation of Christ” a few years back. (shiver)

Jesus Update – Okay, so it’s not really a Jesus update…but sorta. Sam Rockwell, Bette Midler, Kim Cattrall and British singer Pixie Lott have joined the cast of the 70's-set comedy "Sweet Baby Jesus" for Intandem Films says Deadline. Rockwell and Lott will play an expecting hippie couple who arrive in Bethlehem, Maryland to visit the woman's mother (Cattrall). There they reveal the pregnancy is not via the boyfriend and the townspeople are convinced they're about to witness the Second Coming (instead of a one-night stand at a Grateful Dead concert gone wrong). Midler plays the owner of a guesthouse that is putting up the couple (no room at the Inn?). Steve Blair pens the script and Peter Hewitt ("Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey") directs the $10 million project. Filming kicks off this August in Maryland and Ireland (spoiler alert: Jesus is Irish). Okay, this has some potential to be funny. Sam Rockwell’s always hilarious in his own way, hippies, biblical humor, and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey wasn’t too bogus. Coming to an indie film house or Netflix near you…

Fox Update – Have you seen the preview for “Jonah Hex” yet? No? Yeah, I caught it once and… I hate to say it… I hope it doesn’t suck. Look a lot better than the first movie that comes to mind...which sadly is "Wild Wild West." We shall see. Anyway, can’t get enough of thinking about Megan Fox in tight fitting corsets? Me neither. That’s why this rambunctious little rumor makes me a little giddy…and I don’t care if it’s founded in hearsay & conjecture that I may or may not have started in the blogosphere. Megan Fox is set to get the ultimate revenge on Transformers director Michael Bay. No, not by f**king his best friend…but by accepting a role in the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie! The actress, who apparently quit the action flick after Bay told her she looked unhealthily thin, is already busy plotting her comeback. “Megan is mulling over a number of big movie offers including another sci-fi franchise and a role in the next Pirates of the Caribbean,” reveals a source close to the actress. “She would play a mermaid who charms Captain Jack but she has a dark motive. Megan has always loved Johnny and is desperate to work with him (watch out Brian). She’s grateful to Transformers for making her name but she’s ready to move on to better and bigger things.” Okay, so even better than a corset is an evil succubus in a shell bikini top…and maybe a necklace around the waist. As you might expect, I like the idea. I’m also a little curious as to what the other sci-fi franchises might be. Star Trek? Serenity sequel? Starship Troopers reboot? BARBARELLA??? Anyway, first things first. Jonah Hex is out in a few weeks, then Passion Play at an indie house near you, then we’ll see where it goes from there. I also really like the idea of “Oh, I’m too skinny or whatever for your movie, Mr. Pearl Harbor? Well, it just so happens that Jerry Bruckheimer has an eye candy role in an action flick for me…with Johnny Depp instead of that Feldman, Shia LaBeouf. So long, b**ch!!! Suckiteasy…” Best of luck to you, Miss Fox. As I’ve often said, the best revenge is a life well lived. And besides, it'll be a great transition into "Fathom" later on...

Well, that’ll do it for today. Game 4 of Lakers / Suns is tonight…and frankly, I really don’t care who wins the NBA championship. I’d like to see the Suns do it…just because I have to root for the fellow $teves (Nash & Kerr) but we shall see. Oddly enough, I’m more excited about the Broad Street Bullies (Philadelphia Flyers) being back in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks. The teams haven’t won the cup since 1975 & 1967 respectively. Some town’s going to have a huge parade party in a week or so. Make sure that your cars aren’t parked on the street…and have a great day everybody!!!

Where Should I Go Next?
