Two Inches Below the Heart

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Wednesday night, we finally watched a movie that we’ve anticipated since we first heard about it on “Electric Boogaloo” the documentary about Cannon Films. The working title of this movie may have been “Space Vampires in London” and based off a similarly named novel… but this 1985 sci-fi feature from director Tobe Hooper (“Poltergeist”) & the writer of the sci-fi classic “Alien”… also premiered the flawless nude body of 19-year old French ballet dancer Mathilda May (still f**king stunning at over 50 BTW). I’m talking of course… about the movie “Lifeforce”!!! Now… I had never heard of this movie before the documentary… and I have no idea how that’s possible. It must have REALLY tanked. It also wasn’t on Netflix either streaming or via mail… so I actually bit the bullet… and purchased the Blu Ray sight unseen (thanks Amazon). So the story picks up in deep space… where an American-British collaboration space team is exploring Haley’s Comet, when they notice a large (phallic) spacecraft in the comet’s tail… and discover a weird sort of holding cell with these flawless humanoids in suspended animation (and some charred remains of giant bat creatures). Well, they decide to take three of the humanoids & one of the bat creature corpses on board… and set the course back to Earth. Spoiler alert: Something goes wrong. So then the shuttle is free-floating in Earth’s orbit (auto pilot) and they send another team of astronauts to go get them… but find that everything & everyone on board has basically been charred… except for the three humanoids. They bring them down to Earth… and soon find out… the horror that they’ve unleashed on the planet!!! Okay, that’s all I’m going to say… because I want you all to watch this movie by any means necessary. Hit me up if you want to watch it again! I’m not going to lie… based on the documentary (and other Cannon Films), I went into this movie with low expectations & just wanted to see some 80’s effects and some Mathilda May boobage… but this movie was f**king legit in a lot of ways. Here, I’ll break it down:

What I Liked About the Movie:

·         The Special Effects – Look, I recognize that some of the green screen portions of the movie are a little hokey & jaunted… and some of the puppetry effects are slow & dated by the 80’s… but compared to what I was expecting & have seen from other 80’s movies, this sh*t is on point! The green screen portions may be a little dated… and the comet is ridiculous… but the backgrounds & sheer visuals of it are on point with 2001 & some of the H.R. Giger type stuff. The puppetry effects aren’t bad… and there are a LOT of explosions. Knowing that the movie was done on a budget… I was seriously impressed.

·         The Symphonic Score – The London Symphonic Orchestra scores this movie… and it’s f**king amazing! They build great tension throughout… but it doesn’t seem old & repetitive. I think the end credits song is even one of the classics that they use on NFL Films presentation. Great job with the score!

·         The Randomness of Things – There are guilty pleasures of mine in movies… and it’s often from just not knowing what to expect. This notion of unpredictability was alive & well in Cannon Films movies. This movie is no exception. Because you really have no idea what to expect from the storytelling, the acting, the effects, and how they keep trying to connect these random threads for little or no reason… it keeps you glued to the screen… because you don’t want to miss the craziness (or random boobs). The “she’s a masochist” scene… whoa!

·         Sir Patrick Stewart – YES!!! Captain Picard is in this movie… and the scene where he’s on the table & the aura of Mathilda May is speaking through him to our protagonist… fantastic!

·         Mathilda May – Let’s not f**king joke about it… gorgeous. She may only be on screen for like… ten minutes maybe? She may not actually say any words in the movie (dubbing?). Make no mistake that she’s the focal point of the movie though in every conceivable way. I feel like teenage Angelina Jolie took some notes after catching her dad watching this movie & turned it into her empire.

What I Didn’t Like About the Movie:

·         The Vampire Thing – Look, I know that this is based on a story about space vampires… but this movie didn’t really have vampires. I also know there’s the whole thing at the end of the 2nd act where Professor Exposition starts saying that perhaps the legends of vampires of the old world were based on these humanoids and blah blah blah… but you know what’s NOT explained? The giant bats!!! Is that part of their maturation? Once they hit a certain galactic age, do they just sprout wings and become fanged gargoyles? (I smell a sequel?) These humanoids suck the “lifeforce” out of humans every two hours to keep from… basically exploding into dust… and from what I can tell, their powers are being stunningly sexy, strength, being impervious to bullets (grenades?), some telepathic powers, the ability to transfer their lifeforce into other people & shattering glass with their comatose expressions… but they don’t transform into bats, rats or any of that other vampire stuff… garlic is fine… there are no fangs… there’s no cloaks and/or poofy shirts… hell, there’s not even clothes unless I assume the set was about 40 degrees and they just wanted to drape a sheet over the actor to keep them from freezing to death! What’s the one traditional vampire thing about the whole movie? How they can be killed… IRON STAKES THROUGH THE HEART… or as the movie puts it, something like “The Old Way! Leaden iron… through the energy center… two inches below the heart!” You know… the Old Way. None of these newfangled ways like… grenades.

Overall, I’d say that you have to check this movie out at least once! Hell, I’m going to watch it a few more times… probably because it’ll be an episode on the Podcast… but I may be getting ahead of myself on that one. The movie is a little difficult to find… but well worth it.

Wednesday night, I met up with some of the future in-laws for dinner at Elevation 66 Brewing to celebrate my future mother-in-law’s birthday. It was a lot of fun… the food was great… the people were even better… here are some pictures…

Saturday, Cesar, Heather & KJ were in the Bay Area… so while Heather was at a seminar in Oakland, the boys Cesar & KJ came to have fun with us… and we had a great breakfast at a place called Grindz in Pac Heights… and then went to check out Japantown… and then relax (long night before for them) by watching “Animal Fight Night” on Netflix… seriously, that show is DOPE!!! We ended the evening with dinner at Elevation 66 (yes, twice in about 48 hours… boom!). Here are some pictures…

Sunday, we had a birthday party for Izzy’s mom & sister Tess at the Aunties’ house… and we get to see the wee nephew Everett… here are pictures of that too…

Lastly for this update, Izzy & I had some brewing stuff to take care of. First up, we had our Barrel-Aged Barleywine to bottle (and test before various birthday celebrations in the coming months) so here are some pictures of that…

…and then we had an empty barrel with a little souring going on… so we barreled our intentionally Sour Chocolate Stout from the double batch a few weeks ago to age in the barrel and get a good sour going that we can visit in a few months…

...kegging our regular Chocolate Stout...

…and lastly, we transferred our Homegrown Galena Hopped Pale Ale to secondary.

Whew… a pretty busy week if I say so myself with both of us working full-time… but a LOT of fun & a LOT more fun to come. So until next time, have a great day everybody!!!

ALL of the Stars

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Been a pretty fun week I guess... not sure if I mentioned in past posts that I was nominated for an award at work... but I was completely surprised when I ended up winning it Wednesday. Yup, I basically won an employee of the quarter award. It's one of those things where you work hard, do your best, collaborate with a lot of other great employees who also use their gifts to the best of their abilities on a daily basis... and you think "There's no way I can win this. Very few people know who I am or what I do. They've been here longer. Other nominees are more socialable & more deserving, it's an honor just to be nominated." Then you win... and it's kinda like... "Damn right! It's about time!" Okay, so it was more like "HWHAAAAT???" So yeah, kind of on cloud nine about that thing... but that's not all that happened this week.

Rick Majerus Passed Away - Back in 1999, I was on the practice squad for the University of Utah men's & women's basketball team... so I got to work a little bit with the men's head basketball coach, Mr. Rick Majerus. His grasp of the game of basketball & the strategy behind it was amazing... and his coaching career will show it. From working with the championship winning Marquette team in the 70's to leading the U of U to the national championship game in the 90's, helping players like Andre Miller & Keith Van Horn to take their game to the professional level and so on. Was he the nicest man in the world? I would vote no... then again, a surprising number of celebrities have called me an A$$hole over the years... he probably just did it the most... but hey, that's his style I guess. Even those that loved him would probably say the same. Unfortunately, he was also a large man with a large appetite that didn't pair well with health problems... and unfortunately a tumultuous decade, it finally caught up with him. My deepest condolences to his family... and I hope that he was able to find some peace.

The college football championship is set up as Notre Dame vs Alabama... or the Fightin' Irish vs the Crimson Tide... or as I prefer to look at it, the St. Patrick's Day versus That Time of the Month. It should make for an interesting game... but it's going to be difficult to top the SEC Championship that Alabama played against Georgia to set it up. Pro football has been pretty good today too. A few overtime games... Eagles playing tonight, thought their season is basically done... good times.

Friday night, I put up my Christmas tree... now just need presents for under it...

Saturday, I helped Dizzy with a booth of her amazing creations at a craft fair at the Pinole Senior Center... and it was actually a lot of fun. We set up in the morning, and we were easily the youngest people there by about... 30 years easy. Dizzy made a variety of cool things to sell for reasonably cheap... but unfortunately the weather was REALLY rainy so turnout wasn't the greatest. However, we still made enough to cover expenses for the table, got a great lunch for a $10 donation, even found a few trinkets for a few bucks from other crafters... oh & I got to hang out with my ladyfriend for a few hours on an otherwise rainy day. Here's an early shot of her table before we made a few adjustments... great practice for our next table, wherever that might be.

Saturday night, we watched the highly anticipated "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" starring Rufus Sewell, Benjamin Walker & Dominic Cooper... and from the director of "Wanted" so you know it's historically accurate & obeys the laws of physics & reality. Long story short, it's the story of young Abraham's mother being killed by a man... so he grows up with a heart full of vengeance... and then when he tries to kill the man as a teenager (Walker), he discovers he's a vampire... and then he's saved by a man (Cooper) who becomes his mentor... and trains him to hunt & kill vampires. Now... yes, the story is imaginative & I really liked it because... well, I'm a little crazy & like everybody else I like the idea of Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires (already working on Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter & then collaborate with Rob Zombie on Werewolf Women of the SS). If you're looking for historically accurate telling with minimal plotholes... then by all means watch Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" like I did a few weeks ago. This movie will be full of CGI, action craziness, a little bit of gore, lots of questions regarding plot pionts, and you'll have to stretch a bit to go with the plot point that vampires killed the native Americans & kept slavery intact for so long... but as long as you can get through that, you'll probably enjoy it. It's basically like any other superhero story... just instead of a rich orphan with unlimited funds & cunning becoming Batman, it's an orphan with an axe who hunts vampires & become President. Enjoy! Unrelated, I watched this with Dizzy & Batgirl... and we followed this up with "Expendables 2", the latest episodes of "The Walking Dead" & "Comic Book Men" and then capped off the night with "Land of the Dead." Yeah, it was fitting.

I think that'll do it for tonight. Can't believe it's already December. Better do some Christmas shopping. Have a great week everybody!!!

Hey, It's October

Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

Yeah… I know. It’s been too long. Believe me, I know. Let’s see… been about two weeks or so, right? Well, first things first. I’m healthy & almost completely recovered from my surgery. It’s really just a little scar on my cheek right now… and we’ll see how long that sticks around. Basically I went in a week later to get the stitches taken out… and the nurse was amazed with how quickly it had healed. Given what the right side of my face went through when I was 16… and going to school a week later… a little square inch off my cheek is NOTHING!!! So yeah, that’s cool. Haven’t really been playing ball again until this weekend though. Basketball because they warned me against slaps in the face… and softball because the last two games have been forfeit (other team) and rained out. It’s getting to be that time of the year again.

Also, the lamp went out on my projector TV last night so I've ordered a new one. This last lamp had a pretty good run. I think it has been just over three years on this last one... and the one before that was almost 5 years. Good thing too... because last time the lamp was almost $300 but I found a new one online this morning for $130. Much better... but still a ripoff. Hopefully it gets here in time for football tomorrow... but really it may just be the motivation needed for the girls to help me get started with this backyard renovation... especially since my dad's coming to visit on Friday. We'll probably be out & about during all the daylight hours though with the Utah-Cal game starting at 4 PM across town & the Raiders-Chiefs game starting at 1 PM across the bay. It should make for a wonderful quick weekend though.

Work has been incredibly busy… and it really didn’t help that I had to call in for the full two days of & after my surgery because I woke up & my face was swollen to the point I couldn’t really open my eye after that first night. That weekend after was literally just me staying at home, watching movies & TV (mostly football), icing my face, trying not to sneeze for fear of it splitting my stitches, and not doing anything to get my heart up. Hell, I was nervous when I was walking up a flight of stairs to go number two that first day. Regardless though, it’s all good now… and I’m getting caught up, but it’s not for a lack of work… and my coworkers have been amazing too. Another reason why I haven’t written lately… I’ve just been too damn busy.

That first Tuesday, October 4th, I had dinner with Bubbles at New Etitrea, an Ethiopian place & I had never tried Ethiopian food before. What would you expect it to be like? Gruel & suffering, right? Well, it’s more like curry and some Mediterranean spices… and there’s no utensils, you just take a piece of their flatbread, scoop up some of the meat with sauce (like curry in texture) and eat it. The food was pretty good… but the company was even better. We chatted about setting up a usual time a few times a month where we can catch up because… even though we work 5 feet from one another over 40 hours a week, we hardly talk. I’m all for it… and then we went to Yancy’s for some beers & games. Good times.

That Thursday, my roommate Nurse invited me to… wait for it… Sharktoberfest!!! It’s like Shark Week… but with beer. Anyway, the vision in my head couldn’t possibly have matched up with the reality… but it sounded great… and it was. Thursday nights at the California Academy of Science, they have social hours where there is a $10 admission fee (not bad) and adult beverages offered within the confines of the museum. Combine the nerdy goodness of the aquariums, tropical enviro-dome, interactive exhibits, fellowship of your fellow nerds & other social creatures, a living roof deck offering beautiful views of Golden Gate Park and the surrounding area, add booze & mix… and you’ve got the recipe for a good time. Though… I was disappointed that it was Sharktoberfest… and I only saw one little nurse shark… and no violence like Shark Week… but then again, probably a good thing in hindsight.

Also, I found out that I was kind of a third wheel on a date with Nurse & a pretty nice guy… but her friend was also there too (though I think she doesn’t care for me for some reason. I know, it’s weird right?) but after the museum, we went to The Bitter End and had a few drinks there (date guy was driving… a Beemer) and played some pool. It was a pretty great evening.

Saturday morning, there’s a knock on the door & I’m the only roommate up… and standing at the door is a cute girl in a little black dress (“Dear dairy, JACKPOT!!!”). Apparently, she is my new neighbor a few doors down… and she had met a few of the other roommates and wanted to see if they wanted to do breakfast. I informed her that I was the only one up… and had I not just ate, I would gladly join her… wait, my name is $teve by the way (What? What was I saying? So awkward…) We will call her… Joy. Anyway, she thanked me & said she’d see if anybody else wanted to go with her or if she would just cook something up. I offered her some scrambled eggs that I could warm up, but she declined. Sigh…

About an hour or so later, I figured that I’d make a walk down to the post office to mail some things out & call my mom along the walk for our chat. I told her about the incident earlier… and she freaked as a mother would, “Oh my gosh, she’s probably seen you in the parking lot talking to me & wondered who you were talking to & wants to jump your bones.” I… didn’t really get that vibe… but I rarely do. Then as I’m walking back from the post office, we’re talking about another subject… and Joy walks by the other way. We exchange greetings (“Hi, how are ya?”) keeping eye contact… but also stride. After a safe distance, I inform my mom on the line who walked by… and she basically tells me to turn around and go talk to her now, okay… whatever & we hang up. I turn around… and I don’t see her anywhere. Did she turn a corner? Hide behind a bush? I don’t know. She mentioned breakfast… so maybe she went to La Terrasse by the post office. Checked it out, didn’t see her, schucks. Next time. P.S. Let me know when you think that turned a little stalkerish because I felt it borderline.

Back at the apartment, a few of the roommates & I were flipping through the channels… and we found “Back to the Future Part II” and it had just started… so we HAD to see it… you know, with 2015 being just around the corner. Of course after Part II… was Part III so we had to watch that too. Watching it as an adult though… with the roommates… we basically came up with some new theories about it. I know I’ve mentioned a few in the past… but there might be something to these… so hear me out.

Theory #1: Doctor Emmett Brown… is a vampire. Think about it. The man doesn’t age a DAY from 1955 to 1985. That’s thirty years. And you can tell me that he would just have changed from old to old but… let’s say his in his fifties in the 50’s. Wouldn’t he be in his 80’s in 1985? Do you know guys in their 80’s that are going on magical time traveling adventures of self-discovery including lightning, Libyans, Lea Thompson & DeLoreans? I didn’t think so. Especially with a clear brilliant mind & youthful vigorous body that helps him to (spoiler alert) father children while inventing a hovering time traveling train during the term of the 19th century? Also, the hair… maybe it was because I saw Bram Stoker’s Dracula on Blu Ray a few days earlier… but tell me that’s not vampire style. It was just something that I had never realized before… but now, it puts a whole new twist on this incredible trilogy. Oh… and on that note, Strickland is a vampire too… but he’s more disciplined, not like those slacker vampires out inventing time machines. He has no heart. No soul. He looks the same in 1885… because he is the same… with a moustache. You can’t convince me otherwise.

Theory #2: Doctor Emmett Brown… is Rashe Algool. We started with that idea that he was The Batman because of his knack for inventing, seemingly endless energy & nowadays creepy tendency to keep teenage boys around (seriously, what’s up with that?). However, with some thought, we decided that he was in fact immortal (Batman is not, hence half of his appeal) and his powers & abilities seem to have a more devilish quality to them. Batman would never manipulate the space-time continuum… or steal plutonium from Libyan terrorists (maybe liberate plutonium in order to stop Libyan terrorists, but that may be semantics). Again… the hair doesn’t help his cause towards hero over villain. Oh by the way, for those of you thinking that I’m comparing Doc Brown to Liam Neeson from “Batman Begins” that’s not the case. I’m talking about Rashe Algool from the Batman comics… and more specifically the animated series from the early nineties (which kicks so much ass in every way). We also devised that if there was a Batman in this version, the reason for their discontent would be because of a disagreement at a NAMBLA meeting concerning their young wards. Anyway, just some observations we made… and now I invite you to watch the movies in a group of friends with those thoughts in mind.

Sunday, I woke up fairly early to volunteer with a Meal on Wheels fundraiser at Hermann Plaza, basically a wine mixer in which I was helping by selling raffle tickets. They paired me up with a lady in her late thirties/early forties… we’ll call her CC… and long story short, we sold more raffle tickets than the other 6-7 teams combined. We rocked HARD!!! We also chatted the afternoon away as well & enjoyed some great classic rock cover band music… and after our shift of raffling, some of the vintages & light snacks that the event had to offer. Afterwards, we went for a few drinks at Elephant & Castle down the street & Globe a few blocks away where we later met up with some of CC’s friends. Good times… and I may have found a good friend to hang out with once in a while. We shall see. If not, blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol.

The work week was busy busy busy… and not a whole lot going on except for a little rain & my face starting to look human again. The scar is now just a little discoloration on my cheek for the most part & I’m using Vitamin E to take care of even that. Probably won’t even be noticeable by the time Vegas rolls around in a month.

Oh… and remember Joy from earlier in this entry? Well, Friday morning, we were both getting on the bus, she sat next to me, we chatted it up a bit for that 20-30 minutes… and check this, she actually asked me about the making phone calls in the cul de sac… my mom was actually right. It makes sense because it’s the only time she sees me… but you know, cosmic. Anyway, we chatted, I told her she was welcome to come hang at our apartment anytime, she mentioned that she was new to town, so I offered my services as a concierge, dropped the digits… my move has been made. We shall see where it goes from here. However, just the fact that a cute lady like her would even willingly talk to me makes me feel fresha denna mutha f*cka… Have a great weekend everybody!!!

I Got A Sweet Tooth

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

So… my brother left. Here’s the deal, I was talking to him last night… and basically what turned into a little smoking out on the deck conversation turned into my brother being in tears wondering what the point of his life was besides being a father to his two kids (since their mother is a useless crack whore). He didn’t want to work at a gas station anymore… and he wants a good job… but doesn’t know if he can (want to) go to school for a job that still won’t be there. See, this was different then I usually see my brother. He doesn’t cry much around me. Usually he’s just angry… and a little violent… but we were actually talking about it. I offered my place for as long as he needed, said we could chat about options over the weekend and all the stuff that a good brother should. Then he received a call from my mom’s house. It was my stepdad… and my niece Kairi wasn’t sleeping & she wanted to talk to her daddy. I’ll admit, I was kind of eavesdropping, but with passing traffic outside on my deck it was hard to make out. All of a sudden, my brother hangs up the phone and puts his face in his hand. “What’s up? Bad connection?” “My daughter just told me that she doesn’t want to live with me anymore. She wants to live with grandma.” I was a little stunned. “Just like that? What did she say?” “Just like that.” “She’s a f**king four year old girl. Not even four yet. She’ll say stupid sh*t from time to time. She just likes being spoiled is all.” The phone rings again & I hear my stepdad on the line but can’t quite make it out… something in a “sorry your daughter said that” tone. I just heard my brother say "I will be there tomorrow. You will get me an apartment for a month for me & my kids to stay at." Sometimes said back on the other line. "I WILL BE THERE TOMORROW. YOU WILL GET ME AN APARTMENT!!!" Hangs up. So, to sum up, right in the middle of a conversation with an end goal of setting his life up with a point besides just being a father to his kids, he gets a call from his daughter saying that she doesn’t want to live with him anymore. Needless to say, this was the excuse he needed (had been looking for) to go back to Utah and throw a tissy fit at my mom. Oh… and why did Kairi say that? Because my mom got a puppy… that my brother had already told the kids no on. Isn’t family fantastic? It could be worse, no doubt… but yeah, I did my part.

Other than that, I had no idea what to do this weekend but I figured I’d best catch up on my laundry & cleaning up after my brother (f**king pig sty everywhere he goes), get a haircut & watch my first professional football of the season (been busy the past few weekends as you know). Who knows what else may happen, right? Well, Friday night I started by going to a coworker’s going away party (off to LA to be an actor, I’ll let you know if he’s in anything I like… I mean, Lindsay was once a friend of the blog) and it was a lot of fun. There was Beer Pong, great peeps, hot girls (though every single one of them was spoken for, I checked), great tunes, even a little freestyling. While having a conversation about sexy Halloween costumes and how unnecessary they really are when you have a sense of humor, it somehow got to age… and I mentioned my 30th birthday coming up… and how I wanted to go to Amsterdam, but nobody could afford to go with me (nor will I be able to at this rate). “Why don’t you just have an Amsterdam themed party?” “Holy sh*t!!! That’s BRILLIANT!!! I’ve already got the red light bulbs (bow chicka bow wow), just get a few dozen tulips, some brownies, maybe talk to a buddy that lives on the river to replace the canals, maybe have a Jewish family in the crawl space, a few Rembrandts on the wall, girls dancing in windows, Heineken EVERYWHERE. Oh it’ll work…” So if it comes to be, you’re all invited to my 30th birthday Amsterdamian extravaganza. I’ll keep you posted.

Saturday, didn’t do much expect clean, laundry & college football… though some great games, but you don’t care. Sunday, I went on a date. Oh yeah, $teve still dates when he feels the urge… and this one was a coffee date with, we’ll say Candy, in Reno right after I got my oil changed & my hair did. We met up at Java Jungle down in the River District (my favorite area of Reno thus far) and we just chatted. Candy is funny, intelligent, just got back from a 3 week vacation in Peru, backpacked through Europe, Peace Corps in Guinea (west Africa, not New Guinea), has a marketing job, great sense of humor very similar to mine, oh… and she’s gorgeous. I know what you’re thinking “$teve, she way out of your league.” You may be right… but she seemed to be digging me (as they all usually do before I never hear from them again) so we’ll see how it goes. Wish me luck & I’ll invite you to the wedding. HA!!! Anyway, in the meantime, here’s some news since you’ve been deprived the past week or so…

Back in Black… Rubber – In an effort to keep vampire movies from going completely cheesy & ridiculously bad, Kate Beckinsale has officially closed her deal to reprise her role as vampire heroine Selene in a fourth "Underworld" film at Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment says the trades. Story details are unknown beyond the usual vampire vs. werewolves tale, but it seems likely events will pick up from the end of 2006's "Underworld: Evolution" with all the vampire elders now slain and Selene having obtained special powers including the ability to safely tolerate daylight (apparently it was sexually transmitted by a hybrid vampire/werewolf making sweet love to her knee if I remember correctly). John Hlavin wrote the script which J. Michael Straczynski ("Changeling," "Babylon 5") is polishing. Both a director and an actress to play Selene's daughter are currently being sought. Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Len Wiseman are producing. Filming kicks off in March in Vancouver. So gentlemen, prepare thyselves.

Jolie Update – Speaking of hot ladies with questionably sexy accents, Angelina Jolie has chosen young Bosnian actress Zana Marjanovic for the lead role in her directorial debut — a wartime love story between a Bosnian woman and a Serbian man (though nothing like Romeo & Juliet set in modern times, I’m sure). Marjanovic told the Associated Press on Thursday that the screenplay was "fabulous" and she could not wait to start shooting with such a "great actress and humanist" like Jolie. The 27-year-old actress said she was on her way to Hungary to prepare for the film shoot beginning later this year and take place both in Hungary and Bosnia. Jolie has visited Bosnia twice this year — as UNHCR good will ambassador and to scout for her movie — and had promised she would cast only actors from the region. Marjanovic became known after her prominent role in award winning "Snow" by Bosnian director Aida Begic. So yeah… keep an eye out for this movie, I guess.

Commies & Puppies – It’s pretty much a universal trait among all cultures… that you just don’t mess with another human’s spouse, children, car or dog (though cats are okay because… well, they’re just cats & have no souls). However, sometimes they have to send in the loan sharks to bust a few heads. For example, Russian bailiffs have threatened to take what is most precious from a Russian pensioner who has failed to pay a debt -- her three Shar Pei pedigree puppies, they said Friday. Though Shar Peis are technically not dogs, being of the small hairy annoying rat family of the animal kingdom (feel free to Google it), apparently this still involves the aforementioned values. The pensioner, who bailiffs did not name, owes 350,000 rubles ($11,330) to an individual in her home town in Russia's volcanic Kamchatka region in the Far East. "If she does not fulfill her obligations (to pay back the debt) within 10 days, the puppies will be sold by the Federal Agency for State Property Management," bailiffs said in a statement on their site fssprus.ru. In Kamchatka, Shar Pei puppies fetch 15,000 rubles ($482.60) each, media reported. But bailiffs said they will try to sell them for 5,000 rubles to attract more potential buyers (so if you’re interested in that market, great deals to be had). They added that the famously wrinkled Shar Pei puppies have been allowed for the time being to remain with the pensioner, who breeds them as her sole source of income as she has no property (so… she breeds them out of her apartment or something?). By the way, who the hell gave this woman 350,000 rubles when they know all she does is breed ugly dogs? I mean… we’re talking giving back every last dime from the first 25 puppies sold at peak price with minimum interest on the loan. That’s also assuming the food is free (eating pigeons or rats or something), no checkups for the dogs, nothing of the sort, every last dime… for probably five generations of dogs. I’m sorry pensioner… but if you knew that was the deal, then you pretty much deserve to lose that money… but at least you’ll probably get a few dogs out of the deal (at $4000 a pop). Yet another sign of the Apocalypse, I guess when Shar Peis are valued that much. Oh speaking of which…

Apocalypse Update - At least 280 crocodiles have escaped from a Mexican refuge (not refugee) near the Gulf of Mexico after heavy flooding caused by Hurricane Karl, Mexican media said Tuesday. The endangered Morelet crocodiles were on the roam in six coastal areas in the Mexican state of Veracruz and residents were told not to try to capture or kill them, El Economista reported. The governor of Veracruz told reporters about 280 crocodiles were missing from the reserve in La Antigua, although some media put the number of reptiles at closer to 400. Morelet crocodiles can grow to nearly 10 feet and are found in freshwater swamps, lakes and rivers, and the brackish coastal waters of eastern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Federal authorities from the agency charged with environmental protection said crocodile experts (like Steve Irwin? Sorry, too soon?) would be sent to the region to try to recapture the animals. At least 15 people were killed and thousands displaced by the hurricane, which ripped through the Yucatan peninsula and slammed into Mexico's Gulf coast this past weekend. So to recap, a few hundred endangered crocodile prisoners have escaped from their cells to join the army of pythons in Florida and bring out the end of days. All that gibberish in the Bible about the Serpent, the Anti-Christ, Rapture and all that doesn’t seem so crazy & mythological now, does it? And all this time you thought it would be the Environment or Robots that would destroy us all. By the way, has anybody else noticed that it’s been a while since I reported a sexy dream or had a Sexbot Update? Didn’t think so… but I have…

Robopocalypse Update – Legendary filmmaker & iconic $teve, Steven Spielberg himself is said to be considering the film "Robopocalypse" as one of his next projects for Dreamworks Pictures says Vulture. Based on Daniel H. Wilson's unpublished manuscript, the cautionary tale explores the fate of the human race after a robot uprising. Wilson, who has a Ph.D. in robotics, has grounded his tale in a heavy degree of authenticity derived from real robot technology. Drew Goddard ("Cloverfield") has just handed in a new draft of the script which the studio is keen to check out. Spielberg still hasn't made up his mind about which project he'll next helm after "The War Horse" but he may want to decide quickly as there are a multitude of Apocalypses converging to destroy us all… so unless he wants to do this tale years down the road as a historical interpretation like “Schindler’s List” then he’d better get on that pestilence horse immediately after his war horse before the other two show up… like they did for the dinosaurs. Hmm… just had a thought about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse riding around on Raptors. That’d be sweet…

Dino Update - Scientists said Wednesday they've discovered fossils in the southern Utah desert of two new dinosaur species closely related to the Triceratops, including one with 15 horns on its large head. The discovery of the new plant-eating species — including Kosmoceratops richardsoni, considered the most ornate-headed dinosaur known to man — was reported Wednesday in the online scientific journal PLoS ONE, produced by the Public Library of Science. The other dinosaur, which has five horns and is the larger of the two, was dubbed Utahceratops gettyi. "It's not every day that you find two rhino-sized dinosaurs that are different from all the other dinosaurs found in North America," said Mark Loewen, a Utah Museum of Natural History paleontologist and an author of the paper published in PLoS ONE. "You would think that we know everything there is to know about the dinosaurs of western North America, but every year we're finding new things, especially here in Utah," he said. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument has been a hotbed for dinosaur species discoveries in the past decade, with more than a dozen new species discovered. While it is a rocky, arid place now, millions of years ago it was similar to a swamp. The Utahceratops has a large horn over the nose and short eye horns that project to the side rather than upward, similar to a bison (or the MONARCH!!!). Its skull is about 7 feet long, it stood about 6 feet high and was 18 to 22 feet long. It is believed to have weighed about 3 to 4 tons. The Kosmoceratops has similar facial features to the Utahceratops, but has 10 horns across the rear margin of its bony frill that point downward and outward. It weighed about 2.5 tons and was about 15 feet long. The horns on both animals range in length from about 6 inches to 1 foot. Paleontologists say the discovery shows that horned dinosaurs living on the same continent 76 million years ago evolved differently. Scientists say that other horned dinosaurs lived on the same ancient continent known as Laramidia in what is now Alberta, Canada. The numerous horns are believed to have been used to attract mates and intimidate sexual competitors, similar to horns on deer. "The horns really are probably developed at puberty, because most likely these are signals for mate recognition, competition between males, things like that," Loewen said. "They're sexual signals and really that's how we think this group of dinosaurs divided." Again though, that’s all speculation… but hey, what else are you going to do when you find something that died millions of years ago?

Well, that’ll do it for today. Enough talk about family drama, hot girls & the Apocalypse… and the correlation between all three. Also, less than two weeks until my dad comes to visit for the football game and five weeks until New Orleans Halloween, which is even better than a North Pole Christmas or a Dublin St. Patty’s Day. Good times y’all. Filly’s really excited for it too, as she should be. I’m kind of a big deal… so watch out when Tropical Storm $teve hits the Crescent City. Have a great day everybody!!!

Krewe of Boo

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

So… pretty big news yesterday. First off, I have a roommate again. A gentleman came over to check out the apartment… and of course, it’s a great deal for this part of town & a bachelor pad & I’m pretty f**king awesome… so yeah, I took him to meet the landlord and start the process. He’ll be moving in at the start of August (right around the time my mom & aunt will be visiting). He seems like a cool cat. Been in the area a few years, his buddy who he lived with is moving out to Tahoe Donner area and that’s just too much of a hassle for him when winter rolls in, Bills fan (so we both despise T.O.) from Lake Placid originally, contractor by trade, appears pretty easy going. Hopefully it works out pretty well. We shall see. So yeah, guess I’d better take down the Craigslist posting. Or maybe I’ll wait until the first check clears…

Also, more big news from yesterday. I’ve officially decided that I will be visiting New Orleans for a week on & around Halloween. Yes, it should truly be epic… and it narrowly beat out San Francisco… but it basically boiled down to the fact that I had some flight credits that were going to expire… and I’ve been wanting to go back for over a year now… and it’s basically a nice way to cash in what would otherwise be a $500 flight. I’m already looking into all the fun stuff that we (Filly, myself & her friends) will be doing. Filly tells me that she knows a great karaoke place (and wants to sing “Bad Touch” with me among others), great food establishments, and because of her connections with her jobs, we will be taken care of by the haunted mortuary & carriage rides through the French Quarter. Also, there’s the Krewe of Boo Halloween Parade, and even a Boo at the Zoo at the Audobon Zoo, which oddly enough… in all my journeys to the Crescent City, I have yet to experience. Another big thing… that I’m kinda looking into… is that there’s a Sunday night football match at the Superdome on Halloween night between the defending world champion New Orleans Saints… and the 6-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. The only catch? Filly couldn’t possibly care less about football… oh and the prices I’ve been finding are about $200 a pop for nosebleeds (on that note, still looking for great tickets to the 49ers – Eagles game on 10/10/10 but may find some this weekend). So yeah… it should make for an incredible week… but I’m forgetting the most important thing of all – What do I wear? How will Dr Love portray himself during this most incredible collection of eccentric costumes in the Big Easy? I honestly have no idea. Sure, I could go with Chewbacca again… and Filly’s offered to modify it to be Frank the Bunny (from “Donnie Darko”) but there are just so many options… and I’d hate to hide this handsome face behind a bulky mask. Other suggestions were a gladiator (more like the world’s tallest, skinniest sumo wrestler) or Don Juan DeMarco… and I could definitely pull that off… but I’m not allowed to grow facial hair due to my work (I know, right?). We shall see. Perhaps I will keep it a surprise as well… but suggestions are gladly considered, so please – What should $teve dress up as for Halloween in New Orleans?

Last night, I watched a vampire movie called “Daybreakers” starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe & Sam Neill. Now, you know how I feel about vampire movies nowadays… and that they’re all whiny pissy dramas… but this one had a little twist. Basically it’s set ten years into the future, and for the last decade, vampirism has spread like a virus… and now 95% of the world’s population is vampire. Okay, so they’re in control. There’s a catch though. They’re running out of their most precious resource that gives them… well, un-life – human blood. They can’t feast on each other, animal blood just doesn’t do it, and they have yet to find a substitute… and time is running out before all chaos ensues (think if everybody in the world was starving & had superpowers). One hematologist (Hawke) wants to find a cure to vampirism… and meets up with some humans, including one who used to be a vampire (Dafoe). However, the government is hunting all of them down… and the CEO of the blood bank (Neill) has other plans. Why cure it when you can just medicate it? Yes, this story is ripe with metaphor about politics and the human condition… but I would still highly recommend it. The story is told in a very convincing way (as long as you can accept certain realities of course) and even the mood and tone and coloring really put you into this world. I will warn you though. I found the ending to be a little… ridiculous, but hey, it all has to do with the metaphor I’m sure. Go check this movie out. Especially if you like vampire movies. Anyway, here’s the news… free of vampirism outbreaks… for now…

Brad Pitt is a Zombie!!! – That’s right, forget vampires. Zombieism is what’s really spreading like wildfire… but the good news is that it may free up Angelina on the singles market. Okay, maybe that’s just wishful thinking. Brad Pitt is officially attached to star in the film adaptation of Max Brooks' "World War Z" for Paramount Pictures and Plan B reports MTV News. Set a decade after a virus has turned much of the planet's population into zombies (not vampires), the story follows a journalist interviewing subjects from around the world about their experiences during the 'zombie war'. The book fuses elements of political satire, war and survival horror as it explores how various nations, governments and individuals respond to the crisis. Paramount has also apparently optioned the movie rights to two more of his projects, including "The Zombie Survival Guide" and "The zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks." Marc Forster ("Quantum of Solace") has been attached to direct. A few years back, I attended a seminar conducted by Max Brooks with an ex-girlfriend… and it’s truly one of my fondest memories. Why? Because I found out that I wasn’t the only crazy person with a bunch of crazy friends who have thorough (though possibly far-fetched) plans intact in case of a zombie apocalypse (this was before I was certain of the serpent apocalypse). This could be a pretty good movie. I mean… Zombieland was awesome. Now just throw in Brad Pitt instead of that neurotic kid… and boom!!! Blockbuster, right? We shall see. By the way, for those of you who don’t know, Max Brooks is the son of legendary comedic filmmaker Mel Brooks (“Young Frankenstein”, “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”, “Spaceballs”, etc) so now you know… and knowing is half the battle… especially against the brain-starved zombie hordes.

Orlando Bloom is Not Gay!!! – (allegedly) Actor Orlando Bloom and model Miranda Kerr have married, her employer said Friday. Upscale Australian department store David Jones, which employs the 27-year-old Australian model as a fashion ambassador, said she will not attend a Spring season launch on August 3rd because she was honeymooning with the 33-year-old British star of "Lord of the Rings" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." "Given the exiting news that Miranda and Orlando have recently wed and will be enjoying their honeymoon together, Miranda will not be with us" for the launch, David Jones spokeswoman Colette Garnsey said in a statement. The statement did not say where or when they had married. David Jones would not be commenting on personal aspects of the announcement, that statement said. Kerr said she would continue to work for the store. "I am enormously grateful to David Jones to have been given this time to enjoy such a special moment of my life. I look forward to coming back to Australia in the near future to celebrate with family and friends," she said. "David Jones very graciously released me during this period so we could celebrate an intimate ceremony and honeymoon together," she added. Kerr first met Bloom backstage at a Victoria's Secret lingerie fashion show in New York in 2006. They began dating in late 2007 and confirmed their engagement last month. However, the question remains… really? My gay-dar must be WAY off because… seriously, unless he’s a guard at the Vatican wearing that sh*t… or he lost a bet or something… you know what, I’m not convinced. I’ll report that he’s married to a Victoria’s Secret supermodel but… that is all. Next story… perhaps something more manly…

Machete at Comic Con – That should do the trick. Robert Rodriguez loves Comic-Con, but the San Diego Convention Center is just too limiting. So the filmmaker decided to unveil his new movie, "Machete," on a street corner instead. Rodriguez showed about seven minutes of footage from the film at an outdoor party Thursday night that featured free tacos and margaritas, scantily clad dancers, a dozen tricked-out low-rider cars and a graffiti wall (and sombreros for all!!!). Stars Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez were on hand for the celebration. The film also stars Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Don Johnson and Lindsay Lohan among countless others. The seven-minute clip was sexy, bloody and action-packed. In one scene, Alba puts out an attacker's eye with a stiletto heel. Giggidy!!! In another, Trejo's character slices open an opponent's stomach and rappels down a wall with his intestine. To which Robert said, "The human intestine is 10 times longer than the human body. True fact." It is. The writer-director said "Machete" is a film of and for the fans, who clamored for a full-length movie after seeing a trailer in 2007's "Grindhouse." "I was never going to go beyond the trailer." The film focuses on Trejo's character, Machete, a renegade who's fighting against corruption in the United States and Mexico. Robert Rodriguez wrote the part for Trejo, his first starring role in a 25-year career. "No matter where you go, there's always going to be corruption," Robert Rodriguez said. "So you almost have to create this superhero that can solve a problem that we find unsolvable ourselves." "This is the first Latino superhero," said Michelle Rodriguez (no relation?), who sports an eye patch in "Machete." Arrrrgh… Lohan plays a pistol-packing nun in the movie. Repeat: Former friend of the blog and recovering alcoholic Lindsay Lohan plays a super hot servant of Christ who packs heat. The director said her character has "a really great, surprising arc." Hopefully of her back. "I was playing with icons a lot in this. She was already so iconic in one way, I thought, 'How can you play with that, play with these images in pop culture?' And everything that's going on with her now only fuels that even more." "Machete" opens in September. $teve will be there to show his support. Comic-Con continues through Sunday. I will more than likely not be there… though I don’t have plans this weekend… so we shall see. It has been a while since my last trip to San Diego (two moves to two states ago). Machete sounds like my kind of movie… and now if we can only get Rob Zombie to make “Werewolf Women of the SS” starring his wife, Udo Kier, Jurgen Prochnow and of course… Nicolas Cage as Doctor Fu Manchu!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Saw This Coming? – In other Comic Con news, the "Saw" horror movie franchise is getting a place in the Guinness World Records as the "Most Successful Horror Movie Series," one of the film's producers, Mark Burg, said on Thursday. "I'm still in shock. The fact that we beat out (such horror franchises as) 'Friday the 13th,' 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' 'Halloween' and 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre' is a testament to our cast, crew and our partners at Lionsgate." (and how ridiculous ticket prices have gotten) The franchise consists of six movies, each one having come out consecutively every Halloween since 2004. The seventh, and final, installment (until prequels & reboots pop up in a few years) is due out October 29th and will be featured in futuristic 3D. Collectively, the "Saw" films have made over $730 million at the worldwide box-office and sold more than thirty million DVDs, according to distributors Lionsgate. The films centre around a killer named Jigsaw who puts his victims through psychological torture before killing them. Burg said it was during the production of "Saw 2," that the producers decided to "etch out" one long story spanning seven films. Therefore, after the seventh movie, called "Saw 3D", there will be no other movies, including spin-offs or prequels. Really? "We are done; this is it. We don't want to be that boxer who fought one too many fights." Really? Don’t think I won’t bring this back up WHEN you do. Burg said the seventh chapter was always "anticipated" by fans as the final one. Really? "In every 'Saw' movie, we left questions open and in this movie we answer every question the audience has ever had," Burg said, adding that even new viewers will be able to follow and "get caught up to speed." (“Previously on Saw…”) The Guinness presentation will take place at San Diego's Comic Con convention on Friday. London-based Guinness Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday will be on hand to present the award to the film's producers. Congratulations to everybody involved!!! I like the Saw movies. Sure, they’re primarily a way to capitalize on the audience’s obsession with gore & violence… but there’s at least a decent plot (sorta) and an underlining creepiness and moral to it all (allegedly). As for a horror gore-gy slasher flicks go, they’re pretty good. We’ll see if they don’t try to make more of them though. I obviously have my doubts. Really.

Judge Dress Reboot – I mean… if they try to reboot “Judge Dredd” what’s next? Pootie Tang? ($teve fondly dreams of a world with more Pootie) New Zealand actor Karl Urban ("Pathfinder" & Bones in the new "Star Trek") is reportedly set to play "Judge Dredd" in the upcoming film reboot of the British comic reports Bleeding Cool. Unlike the previous film starring Sylvester Stallone, Urban's handsome face however will remain hidden as the iconic visor and helmet of the law enforcement officer will not be removed at anytime in the film (true to the comic… but may prove awkward for the mandatory love scenes). Pete Travis (“Vantage Point”) directs from a script by Alex Garland (“28 Days Later” & “Sunshine”) which is said to hew closer to the darker tone of the comic book (so don’t expect Rob Schneider to pop up, probably more cannibals & zombies). Shooting will take place in Johannesburg this year for a 2012 release… so don’t wait up.

My Own Reservation – People often tell me that I live in my own wonderful dream world. That very well may be true. I mean… just take into account my frame of reference, if I believe it, then it is so… but don’t worry, I’m not going to get into a whole philosophical discussion with you just yet (though I’ve found over the years that it is a great way to f**k with stoners & have them question everything from their existence to whether they’re gay for God). Instead, I’m going to talk about a man who really tried to stretch his way through a loop hole that doesn’t really exist to get what would be easier for him. My kind of BS’er. An Ohio man who claimed that his American Indian ancestry makes him exempt from city nuisance laws has been ordered to clean up two homes that have fallen into disrepair. I know. When I read city nuisance laws and American Indian heritage, I was expected rain dances in loincloths and ritual sacrifice too. A judge told William Bowersock on Thursday that he has 30 days to take care of the properties in Lima (LY'-muh). The judge rejected Bowersock's argument that he had seceded from the local government and formed his own Indian reservation, thereby making him exempt from the city's property code. Yup, he said it with a straight face too. Bowersock says he thinks the city is singling him out (yeah, because they’re your properties) and using selective enforcement of property codes to harass him (I’m assuming he’s trying to pull the race card). Judge Richard Warren said city officials have given Bowersock years to address the nuisance problem and that the rights of the city and Bowersock's neighbors must be protected (citing both city ordinances and Manifest Destiny). Look, you know how I feel about Native Americans getting screwed over… and not just because my Ottawa heritage makes my skin color the faintest of pinks either. However, does $teve Comes with a Thunder claim his home to be a sovereign two-acre nation in the middle of suburban Ohio? No. Though maybe when I stop renting & actually “own land” that might change. I grasp the key principles of the White Man’s laws. For example, I know that I first have to petition and file a lot of paperwork to get my property sanctioned as a reservation before I can claim for it to be officially be one, until then, it’s just another couple of houses in a neighborhood… and if my place smells like ass (peyote would be generally acceptable) then I have to respect those around me. Hey, that’s why I wear clothes. I respect others around me who may not want to be distracted by my hot body and wreck their cars or have impure and/or unfaithful thoughts. Well, that and anybody who’s walked around in the nude before knows that mosquitoes go directly to the warmest part of your exposed body and… well, you know. Anyway, I like that you at least attempted to find a loophole and play the race card and all… but good luck fixing up your property, Mr. Bowersock. Keep up the good fight.

On that note, I think I’ll call it a day. I’ve babbled on long enough about movies, roommates, future vacations and the like. Still no idea what I’m going to do this weekend but next weekend is mama’s visit and also a new roomie moving in. Should make for an interesting and fantastic time. Any suggestions on what I should do? Eh, I’m sure I’ll find something… or someone. Have a great weekend everybody!!!

Enter the Double Dragon

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Sigh… Well, my mom leaves for her month-long Asian Invasion Trip in the morning…but then I go and read something like this. Remember that crazy sh*t a few weeks ago about protestors in Bangkok? You know, where they were bleeding into jars and leaving pools of it at the steps of their government buildings? Yeah, that’s still going on…and the government has had enough of it…so they’ve basically declared Martial Law in Thailand. Awesome, right? Well, as you can guess, I’ve been in contact with the embassy and they assure me that at this point it’s just more military presence to preserve the peace or whatever…and they’ll keep me posted (via updates on their website). In the meantime, I’m reassuring my mom that it’ll be fine and she’s going to have a great time and ride a f**king elephant or something. I honestly told her that if it gets out of hand, to go hang out with the nearest elephant because those things are sacred to them. Hopefully it won’t come to that though…and she can be out of that crazy town of Bangkok in a few days and see what the world has to offer. Other than that, I’ve just been hella busy trying to get things squared away with work, the road trip, eating, keeping up with friends, women’s basketball championships, all the important stuff. So I guess I’ll just go into the news…

Passing of a Mankiller - Former Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller, one of the nation's most visible American Indian leaders and one of the few women to lead a major tribe, died Tuesday after suffering from cancer and other health problems. She was 64. Mankiller, whose first taste of federal policy toward Indians came when her family ended up in a housing project after a government relocation project, took Indian issues to the White House and met with three presidents. She earned a reputation for facing conflict head-on. As the first female chief of the Cherokees, from 1985 to 1995, Mankiller led the tribe in tripling its enrollment, doubling employment and building new health centers and children's programs. "We feel overwhelmed and lost when we realize she has left us, but we should reflect on what legacy she leaves us," current Cherokee Chief Chad Smith said. "We are better people and a stronger tribal nation because her example of Cherokee leadership, statesmanship, humility, grace, determination and decisiveness." Mankiller met snide remarks about her surname — a Cherokee military title — with humor, often delivering a straight-faced, "Mankiller is actually a well-earned nickname." Continual struggles with her health appeared not to deter her. A 1979 car accident nearly claimed her life and resulted in 17 operations. She developed the muscular disorder myasthenia gravis and had a kidney transplant in 1990. Mankiller used some hospital stays to work on her autobiography with Michael Wallis, which came out in 1993. In "Mankiller: A Chief and Her People," she said she wanted to be remembered not just for being the tribe's first female chief but for emphasizing that Cherokee values can help solve contemporary problems. She once wrote, "Friends describe me as someone who likes to dance along the edge of the roof. I try to encourage young women to be willing to take risks, to stand up for the things they believe in, and to step up and accept the challenge of serving in leadership roles." Mankiller had also battled lymphoma, breast cancer and several other health problems. Last month, her husband, Charlie Soap, said that she had stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer. After that, Mankiller said she was "mentally and spiritually prepared for this journey." "I learned a long time ago that I can't control the challenges the creator sends my way, but I can control the way I think about them and deal with them," she said in a statement released by the tribe last month. "On balance, I have been blessed with an extraordinarily rich and wonderful life, filled with incredible experiences." Born at W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah, Mankiller moved with her family to San Francisco in the 1950s when their farm failed. The pledge of opportunity turned out to be poverty in a housing project. She married and had two daughters, Felicia and Gina. In 1969, she got what she called "an enormous wake-up call" and took her first step into Indian activism by participating in the 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island (remember the pictures from my trip a few weeks back? Indians were welcome). Seventy-nine Native Americans took over the site of the former federal prison to protest a policy that terminated the federal government's recognition of tribal sovereignty and the exclusion of Indians from state laws. The policy was based on the belief that Native Americans would be better off if they assimilated as individuals into mainstream American society. Mankiller moved back to her family's land in Oklahoma after getting divorced in 1975. A decade later, she succeeded former Chief Ross Swimmer, who had tapped her as his running mate because of her business savvy. During her re-election campaign, she pledged to improve the tribe's economic interests. As chief of the Tahlequah-based tribe, Mankiller was less of an activist and more of a pragmatist. She was criticized for focusing almost exclusively on social programs, instead of pushing for smoke shops and high-stakes gaming. Mankiller decided not to seek re-election in 1995, and accepted a teaching position at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, where she held an honorary degree. Among her other honors was a Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation's highest civilian award — presented in 1998. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds in Tahlequah. The world has truly lost a great leader & defender of Native American rights. My condolences go out to her family, friends and the Cherokee Nation.

Double Dragon - Biologists on Wednesday reported the spectacular discovery of a species of giant lizard, a reptile as long as a full-grown man is tall, and endowed with a double penis (oh yeah). The secretive but brightly-colored beast, a monitor lizard, is a close cousin of the Komodo Dragon of Indonesia. But unlike the fearsome Dragon, it is not a carnivore, nor does it feast on rotting meat. Instead, it is entirely peaceable and tucks into fruit (whatever that means…but with a double rudder and the moist interior of most fruit, one can guess). Dubbed Varanus bitatawa, the lizard measures two meters (6.5 feet) in length, according to the account, published by Britain's Royal Society. It was found in a river valley on northern Luzon Island in the Philippines, surviving loss of habitat and hunting by local people who use it for food (and aphrodisiac, twice the meat of the average lizard). How many of the lizards have survived is unclear (head count gets too complicated). The species is almost certainly critically endangered, and might well have disappeared entirely without ever being catalogued had a large male specimen not been rescued alive from a hunter last June. Finding such a distinctive species in a heavily populated, highly deforested location "comes as an unprecedented surprise," note the authors, writing in the journal Biology Letters. The only finds of comparable importance in recent decades are the Kipunji monkey (not the Kwyjibo), which inhabits a tiny range of forest in Tanzania, and the Saola, a forest-dwelling bovine found only in Vietnam and Laos. V. bitatawa has unique markings and an unusual sexual anatomy, according to the study (and anybody else reading this). Its scaly body and legs are a blue-black mottled with pale yellow-green dots, while its tail is marked in alternating segments of black and green. Males have a double penis, called hemipenes, also found in some snakes and other lizards. The two penises are often used in alternation, and sometimes contain spines or hooks that serve to anchor the male within the female during intercourse (not so sexy now, is it?). V. bitatawa has a relative in southern Luzon, V. olivaceus, but the species are separated by three river valleys and a gap of 150 kilometers (95 miles) and may never have met up (or at least don’t speak of it). One reason that the new lizard has gone undetected, the researchers speculate, is that it never leaves the forests of its native Sierra Madre mountains to traverse open spaces. The discovery "adds to the recognition of the Philippines as a global conservation hotspot and a regional superpower of biodiversity," the authors conclude. The giant lizard should become a "flagship species" for conservation efforts aimed at preserving the remaining forests of northern Luzon, which are rapidly disappearing under the pressure of expanding human population and deforestation. How would that be? The conservational spokesanimal for your region is a giant lizard with six legs. So much for balding eagles and impotent pandas.

Blind Speed Record – Can’t get that image out of your head? Try this. Turkish pop-singer Metin Senturk became the world's fastest unaccompanied blind driver on Friday and said he felt he had danced with death. Senturk wept as he emerged from a Ferrari F430 at Urfa airport in eastern Turkey to learn from Guinness World Records officials his average speed of 292.89 kph (about 180 mph) broke the previous record of 284 kph, held by a British bank manager. "I don't think there are any words to describe this feeling. I am really happy. It was really hard, like a dance with death," said Senturk, who has been blind since the age of three. Following Senturk in a separate vehicle was former rally driver Volkan Isik, who guided the blind man by radio. That’s right, blind speed driving. Well, I think this record should be held by an American. So please, somebody get Stevie Wonder out to the Salt Flats, into a rocket car, and just obliterate this record. Oh, it has to be on a track? This was at an airport. It has to be on a road? Okay then, somebody get him to I-80 across Wyoming or Nebraska or something and just make sure he stays straight. Do I have to think of everything? By the way, anybody catch the mention of the blind British bank manager?

Bank Robbing Update – Know where I’m going with this? No, he didn’t get robbed. At least that I’m aware of. A gunman locked bank employees in a vault in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin and left behind a package with flashing lights before stealing cash, while the bank manager unknowingly went about her business. Police Chief Randy Boeldt said the man, disguised with a wig and fake mustache and beard, entered the National Exchange Bank & Trust Thursday and ordered three tellers into the vault where he locked them behind a gate and told them it was no April Fools joke (just to clarify). Boeldt said the man left a box with flashing lights near the vault and told the tellers they would be electrocuted if they left before the lights stopped flashing. The Sheboygan Press reported the manager arrived at the bank, walked into her office and never saw a thing as the robber walked out the door. Do you feel safe? This really happened too. It’s no April Fool’s joke. A bank robber really showed up with a fake wig, beard, moustache, probably in an overcoat, all the usual clichés. The three tellers were really locked into a vault…and were really allegedly help captive with an alleged electro-bomb of some sort with flashing lights, which I’m sure he sacrificed a few children’s toys to collect. The bank manager really didn’t know that anything was going on as she went through her morning routine. And most importantly, the robber really got away with it. Honestly, I’m sure he was as surprised as everybody out there is that it actually worked out. “I can’t believe they fell for the electrocution thing. Oh well, I’m sure they’re paid by the hour…and they’re insured.” There’ve been a LOT of bank robbing stories recently, huh? I’d hate to think I was starting a trend. I’d much rather my legacy by the Pioneer of Panda Porn as it should be.

First Hottie Update – Ah, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. The first lady of France. I never seem to mind when you make the news. So in addition to trying to find the “Termite gangs” that are robbing banks all over Paris, police are investigating who started rumors of infidelity involving President Nicolas Sarkozy and France's first lady that began on a blog (GASP!!!) and spread to newspapers overseas (since journalism is morte), the Paris prosecutor's office said Tuesday. Sarkozy's lawyer, Thierry Herzog, said in a radio interview Monday evening that he did not exclude the possibility the allegations of "totally unfounded liaisons" had been planted in a bid to take down the glamorous couple. The investigation was opened based on a complaint filed March 25 by the owner of a weekly newspaper whose blog carried the initial rumors that alleged that both the president and his wife, a former top model, were involved in relationships outside their marriage. Judicial police are handling the investigation, the prosecutor's office said after a complaint was filed for the "fraudulous introduction of information in a computer system," which apparently is against the law in France. The rumors were seeded in early March amid France's regional elections during which Sarkozy's conservative UMP party registered a resounding loss. "Tonight, I cannot exclude a plot or that some people, for personal or financial interests ... wanted to try to destabilize the president of the republic and his wife," Herzog said in an interview with RTL radio. British newspapers were among those that picked up the stories, though the mainstream French press largely shied away — except to write about the flurry of reports in Britain. Sarkozy's whirlwind romance and marriage in February 2008 to Bruni has been closely watched. It is his third marriage and she, in her younger years, famously dismissed monogamy as untenable (mmm… nice). In the face of the rumors, the couple have portrayed themselves as closely united. They were often seen holding hands during a trip last week to the United States that included a private dinner with the Obamas at the White House. The blog in question appeared March 10 on the Web site of the weekly newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. The large media company that owns the Sunday paper, Hachette Filipacchi Medias, filed the complaint, opening the way to the probe (mmm… sorry, back on track). Hachette Filipacchi is owned by the Lagardere group, which is headed by Sarkozy's good friend, Arnaud Lagardere. A close aide to Sarkozy, Pierre Charon, told the Web site of the newsweekly Le Nouvel Observateur that "we want to get to the bottom of this. ... As the expression goes, fear must change camps." Reporters at the newspaper took exception to what they said was Charon's threatening tone. A statement from the journalists' union of Le Journal du Dimanche said the paper "has no need to cede to authorities' wishes or to pressure or threats from wherever they may come." It was unclear why the presidential couple did not initiate legal action themselves once the rumors cropped up. Ugh…maybe they had better things to do? Look, the internet is basically around for four things: Social networking, pornography, information & false information. It’s around for starting rumors. Especially about celebrities. Did you hear how Corey Haim really died? It wasn’t overdosing on drugs. He was saving a box full of kittens from an abandoned warehouse while it was aflame. Don’t believe me. Google it. By the way, Jeff Goldblum is watching you poop.

Jim & Jen Break Up – The only thing I hate more than a funny guy & a funny girl breaking up…is Twitter. Alas, the comedic genius Jim Carrey and his superhot girlfriend Jenny McCarthy broke up after five (torrid passionate fun-filled) years. The couple's separation seems amicable, according to their break-up tweets. Carrey posted, "Jenny and I have just ended our (five-year) relationship, I'm grateful (for) the many blessings we've shared and I wish her the very best!" And McCarthy shows her sentiment tweeting that she will, "always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart." Together they have spread much awareness for autism and showed a great love for humanity. Though not together in a relationship sense, let's hope they continue to remain strong in their efforts to lift up society. Now, is this a rumor? Remember my previous story? Huh? Celebrity power couple? Promoting good throughout the world? Guy who talks funny & a model? Similarities? No? Huh? Think about it.

Americanization of Vampires – That’s right, vampires. For centuries, America has taken other nation’s ideas…and perfected them. We took soccer…and made it football. We took pizza…and made it delicious. Then occasionally we destroy things. We take carry-alls…and make them man purses. We take beer…and we water it down (UTAH!!!). We take vampires, lords of great power who rule the night…and we turn them into sniveling teenage p**sies. And yes, I blame Anne Rice & Brad Pitt for starting it…but that’s another story. A British university is to hold a conference on Vampires in an effort to counterbalance the "Americanization" of the fictional genre. Delegates to the University of Hertfordshire's "Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture" conference to be held on April 16-17 will have their food served to them out of coffins (my funeral will have a deli platter on my corpse) as part of a mission to encourage students of all ages to study literature. English lecturer Sam George, who has just launched a Master of Arts degree in vampire fiction at Hertfordshire, said the most famous vampire narrative of all, Dracula, was written by Irishman Bram Stoker and set in London and Whitby in Yorkshire, but that now with the "Twilight" saga and "True Blood," modern vampires have become Americanized (and moody b**ches). "It's amazing how many British actors have played Dracula on screen," George said in a statement on the university's website. "I aim to put the British vampire back on the map." George said she (yes, SHE) is particularly interested in the new teen vampire narratives which act as a useful metaphor for wider teen anxieties about their bodies and the first stirrings of desire. "The new breed of vampires are far from monstrous, they are glamorous and sexy and have an emotional side. Their (teenagers') attraction to vampire figures provides a safe way for them to acknowledge these desires." Conference lectures will be delivered by academics and author Marcus Sedgwick, who writes young adult fiction with a vampire twist. Now, here’s my favorite part. Panel topics during the two-day event will include "Dracula Lives," "Appetites of the Undead," "Undead Victorians," "Undead Teens," "Politics of the Undead," "Undead Romance," "The Gay Undead," "Undead TV," "Undead in the New Media," "Identity, Legality and the Undead" and "Gendering the Undead." I’m sure there will be a series of books titled “Pride, Prejudice & the Undead” will be coming out soon. I would thoroughly enjoy being in that group…but hey, it’s across the pond…and the Wingmans will be hanging with me those days. Also, imagine THAT degree on your resume, Master of Arts in Vampire Fiction. Great conversation starter, I guess. “Ah, so you do have a degree? Excellent. Ugh… really? Master of the Arts…in Vampire Fiction? Are you f**king with me right now? Cuz the last guy that interviewed claimed to have a Masters in Pimpology from Nuttingame University. He even claimed to be a doctor. What kind of a name is Mookie anyway? Yeah, I’m sorry, I just don’t buy it. Do you have any references?” Congratulations America!!! We’re locking down the market on vampires. Sure, I think Twilight is f**king retarded (and oddly enough, my stepmother & JL Clyde agree) but hey, dominance is dominance. So what next? We’ve got vampires, zombies, werewolves, Frankenstein monsters, mummies, ghosts (both Poltergeist & Swayze varieties), demons, dinosaurs, sharks, psychos, mutants, time traveling robots, I mean…we’ve got the whole horror industry on lock, right? Kudos! What else is there? Giant lizards that destroy cities? Cameras, video tapes & cell phones that can kill you? You can keep that crap, Tokyo. Well, to celebrate this conquering of the world of vampires (though I may not agree with all aspects), I thought I would celebrate the only way I know how…by showing pictures of sexy vampires…please enjoy…
Morticia was a vampire, right?
It doesn't matter. Gada mia...

So yeah, that’ll do it for today. Pray for my mom, stepdad & their friends…and of course the people of Thailand as well. Hopefully they can all get along peacefully and enjoy the fact that…they live in Thailand. Wish I was going with them…now to protect them more than be on vacation with them (that’s my story & I’m sticking to it). Seriously, the only hope my stepdad has of protecting them is if my mom hides behind him and they think he’s an elephant. “NO!!! Don’t shoot! Don’t hurt him. Let’s go over to the post office and write our names in blood on the sidewalk.” They’ll be fine. Can’t wait to see all of ya on my Road Trip…and my vacation basically starts in a week. Yippee!!! Have a great day everybody!!!

Where Should I Go Next?
