Hercules: The Legendary Barrels

Saturday morning after some running around, Izzy & I transferred our Scotch Ale & Cider to the barrels (since it got rescheduled from Friday night due to coworkers’ going away party)… so here are those pictures that I promised you last time… but this time, for real…

Saturday night, Izzy & I went to her former coworkers’ annual Halloween party and as usual it was EPIC… here are a few pictures… and even a special one of us in our outfits… Ash & Umbreon from Pokemon

This past weekend, we watched “Age of the Dinosaurs” which was a 2013 TV movie starring Treat Williams & Ronny Cox… but it was on Netflix and has “Dinosaurs” in the title… so you know that I’m down. The story is about a company who has devised some amazing flesh-regeneration technology… so now they can create dinosaurs. That’s all that you need to know. Well, they have a presentation showing off their new creatures (Ceratosaurus, Carnotaurus & Pteradons) and… spoiler alert… they get out of their cages and start running amok through Los Angeles. So… the CGI actually wasn’t that bad. I mean… considering that it’s a horrible Syfy Channel movie… the designs of the dinosaurs were pretty good, though the movements could’ve used some tweaking. The acting was… well, the script was just bad. It’s hard to go from there. Apparently dinosaurs are impervious to bullets and/or rocket launchers… but hey, I’m even willing to let to go towards an explanation like “maybe the flesh-regeneration is just super fast so they recover instantly like Wolverine” instead of “they just couldn’t afford to sway from the original design in any way because we blew our budget” or something like that. Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend it… but it’s pretty good for Syfy.

We followed it up with a Halloween movie that was recommended via the internet called “Stake Land” starring Nick Damici (“Late Phases”) and Kelly McGinnis (“Top Gun”). It’s the story of a post-apocalyptic world where these zombie-vampire hybrids have taken over… and human are struggling to get by. A teenager’s family is killed right in front of him… but he’s saved by a mysterious man called Mister (Damici) who then takes the boy under his wing & teaches him to survive in this wasteland full of these zompires, cannibals, militaristic religious zealots, militaristic military outfits, and so on. Basically it's like "Zombieland" but with absolutely no humor whatsoever... which was kind of the best part. Overall though, the movie is really good & gritty (though the narration gets annoying at times) and the action scenes are actually pretty damn good. I'd highly recommend checking it out. Just don't expect it to be funny... it's more of a think piece about what things might be like if the world were overran with zombie-vampires who are impervious to many things...

Sunday we watched football… and ate Halloween candy… and then eventually we started watching bad movies like BOTH 1983’s “Hercules” & 1985’s “The Adventures of Hercules” starring Lou Ferrigno and from Cannon Pictures who I mentioned last entry in that documentary. So… we all know the story of Hercules, right? King of the Greek gods Zeus bangs a mortal woman named Alcmene and they have a demigod baby… he grows up to be super strong, Hera (wifey of Zeus) is angered with this bastard child, 12 labours or tasks that he must complete to form Voltron… or something like that… lots of side adventures… basically super tough Greek dude who wears furs & beats down foo’s. Well… in this interpretation of the Hercules mythology… it’s… a little different. This starts out more like Moses in the Bible, where he’s the child of Zeus & a queen… but then there’s a coup and the royal family is slain… except the nanny floats Hercules down the river… and then he’s raised by a regular family (so opposite of Moses?) and then… he just kinda grows up to be a badass… and there’s an evil King Minos who is all about SCIENCE!!! Then there are some chicks in robes… and robot dragons with laser beams… and Hercules can grow big enough to separate Europe & Africa which apparently is one of his labours? And there’s a lot of dubbing… or is there? Yeah, it’s definitely dubbing but nobody gets credit… and then there’s a sequel that we had to watch too… but yeah, if you’re looking for another odd interpretation of the Hercules legend… then definitely check out these movies. They’re not good… but definitely interesting. Made in Italy!!!

There have been MANY Hercules movies made over the past… let’s just say 50 years. So how does this one fare? Well…

Ultimate Ranking of Hercules Movies:

1.       Kevin Sorbo in “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” (1995-99) – I’m sure that it’s a lot easier to tell the epic tales of this legend when you have six seasons of television to do so (and guest spots with the likes of Bruce Campbell & Lucy Lawless spin-offs) but yeah, easily the best representation thus far… and you’ll see why with the rest of this list. He’s got the Fabio look… pretty well built… the charisma… yeah, he was the 90’s

2.       Dwayne Johnson in “Hercules” (2014) – I reviewed this movie a few months ago… and yeah, he’s amazingly well built… he’s got the charisma… yeah, he’s the new millennium.

3.       Arnold Strong in “Hercules in New York” (1969) – Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first movie… and it’s horrible… absolutely horrible… but he’s Hercules… and he has no problem with reminding you something like 78 times during the course of the movie. Let’s be honest though… he’s in the Guinness Book for World Records for having the best body ever. That’s something to take into account… and this was the movie that started the American Dream that is Arnie.

4.       Lou Ferrigno in 80’s movies – Look, it may not be his voice… but his mannerisms and stuff aren’t bad in this movie… and the youngest Mr. Olympia ever didn’t do half bad… it was the script that was pretty bad. SCIENCE!!!

5.       Tate Donovan in Disney’s “Hercules” & TV series (1997) – Look, Disney makes cutesy stuff… and James Woods was Hades… that’s about all I remember from this movie. Had you asked me who did the voice of Hercules, I probably wouldn’t have responded that guy from “Love Potion #9”

6.       Ryan Gosling in “Young Hercules” (1998-1999) – Didn’t even know this existed… so it must not have been good, right? You’re welcome for bringing it to your attention, ladies. Enjoy.

7.       That Big Dog in “The Sandlot” (1993) – This version of Hercules was just completely ridiculous. He didn’t seem like a mighty warrior at all… more like a slobbering beast. Absolutely deplorable.

8.       Kellen Lutz in “Legend of Hercules” (2014) – Well… but still not the worst. This movie was horrible. I feel like this movie was in the spirit of “Oh sh*t, did you hear they’re making a Hercules movie with the Rock?” “Oh man, we should do one first! Who’s available? I’ll work on the script while you find the actor & we’ll start shooting on Monday…” “Ooooh… we got one of the guys from the Twilight movies!” “Which one? You know what… doesn’t even matter… they’re all horrible. Sign him on the cheap & send him a trainer. He’s got four days to get ready!”

Anyway, that’ll do it for this past weekend. More fun stuff coming up this week… including new brews… and the California State Homebrewing Competition!!! Have a great day everybody!!!

Six Screaming Streaming Scaries

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

It’s that time of year! The time of ghouls & ghastly images and horrible sequels and remakes all brought out to strike fear into movie goers and cause their bowels to shiver!!! Pumpkin pops up everywhere! Everybody pulls out their amber lagers and calls them Oktoberfest! Not to mention their fresh harvest wet hop IPAs! In honor of this most incredible time of year, Izzy & I have decided that we were going to watch some more horror movies in honor of the Halloween season. We already did the first two “Pumpkinhead” movies a while back… but there are plenty more streaming on your Netflix… so here are a few that we tried out… and it’s quite the diverse groups:

First up, we continued our stroll down Stephen King heyday lane… with a movie that I vaguely remember going to see in a drive-in when I was like… maybe 3-4 years old… but I don’t remember much except evil looking children so I probably just went to play in the park when it was one… and that’s 1984’s “Children of the Corn” starring Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton (who looks like Dirk Nowitzki, no f**king joke). The movie is about a young couple (Hamilton & Horton) who are traveling across the country… and end up in rural Nebraska in a small town called Gatlin… where things are… obviously a little crazy. It’s not a spoiler alert because it’s literally the first two minutes of the movie… but the kids a few years ago just up & decided to kill all of the adults except for an old man who works the gas station. Why? Well… that you’ll have to watch the movie for. Regardless, the young couple is in for quite an adventure… and the kids in the movie are genuinely creepy looking. If you haven’t seen the movie, I’d say check it out.

That being said… I was not too afraid of this movie. Why? Well… it’s the same reason that I’m not too scared of Chucky from the “Child’s Play” movies… because I feel like… I could easily destroy a small group is children, especially if they just have a few small weapons & calls of “Fornicators!” at their disposal. A six year old comes at me with a tire iron… he’d better be a LOT quicker than I am because he may wound me… but there’s no way that he’s stopping my follow-through with an overhand right and throwing him a curb party. If I had a baseball bat… or a board with a nail in it… I’m pretty sure I can take all of his friends too. Anyway, that was my one real problem with the movie… and there’s a few scenes where I was just like “B**ch slap that kid! There’s not even a lot of them!” but overall, it’s pretty intriguing at best… and almost laughable at other parts. I say check it out & judge for yourself. “OUTLANDER!!! WE HAVE YOUR WOMAN, OUTLANDER!!!”

Next up was one that had been on the queue for a while… and that’s “The Taking of Deborah Logan” starring Jill Larson & Anne Ramsey. This is a 2014 found footage movie that centers around a couple college students filming for a doctoral thesis about Alzheimer’s Disease (just go with it). It’s the usual combination of camera guy, tech guy & mildly attractive chick who’s in front of the camera most of the time (even when she’s not supposed to be) and they’ve been invited (for a moderate cost) to live in a home in Virginia to document a quite proper elderly woman with Alzheimer’s named Deborah Logan (Larson) and her caregiving daughter Sarah (Ramsey). During the first few days, they see the effects of the disease firsthand through the many strategically placed cameras of how this horrible disease affects not only the elderly mother, but her alcoholic daughter… and you really get a sense of sorrow for their situation… but then sh*t gets REALLY messed up. Things get really creepy… Deb seems to pop up everywhere… like she can teleport… and gets weird voices… and almost superhuman strength… and just fits of craziness… and there’s even a crazy neighbor… but what could possibly be causing all of these fits? Is it the disease… or something else? Non-spoiler alert (because it’s in the title): It’s demonic possession.

Okay, I’ll admit… my description of this movie… sucks. However, the movie… is f**king awesome & creepy and I can’t recommend it enough. This is genuinely one of the best horror movies that I’ve seen in a while. Yes, there are flaws with the whole “found footage” format… but yeah, it’s still REALLY impressive… and honestly I think Jill Larson should get an Academy Award nod… she ROCKED that sh*t… and I was genuinely moved by this movie in many different ways. GO CHECK THIS MOVIE OUT NOW!!! Watch it with a loved one… in the dark… it’s what you want for Halloween… and it’s free with your Netflix subscription. You’re welcome!

Next up was the classic movie “The Fly” but not the one you’ve probably seen. This is the 1958 original starring Vincent Price… but the leads are David Hedison& Patricia Owens. Dr. Andre Delambre (Hedison) has finally done it! He’s made a machine that can teleport objects across the room… and there are limitless applications for such a machine. There seem to be some kinks though. Some solid objects come across backwards… a rabbit basically disappears… obviously there are a few kinks to work out before this can be shown to the scientific community. Then… something goes terribly wrong… and as you can probably guess by the title… it involves a fly! Okay, I kind of love the 50’s horror flicks. I have a soft spot for them… and especially the Vincent Price ones… I just dig that guy’s voice like no other & he always seems to be in the best ones (“House of Wax”, “House on Haunted Hill”, “Last Man on Earth”, etc) and even though he’s kind of a side character as Andre’s brother Francois… he still plays an integral part towards the end. The movie is actually pretty awesome… and builds up suspense pretty well (even though you probably already know how it goes) so I’d recommend checking it out… especially if you are squeamish when it comes to gore & stuff. There’s nothing like that in this movie.

Next on the queue was 2001’s “The Others” starring Nicole Kidman. Now… a little backstory on this one. I watched it a while back when it first came out… but I fell asleep about halfway through… because it was a little slow paced & I was also living on 4 hours’ sleep max with school & work… but yeah, I woke up for the last… about 66 seconds of the movie, had no idea what I was seeing… but assumed it wasn’t work another two hours of my life if it didn’t even wake me up with my surround sound system. The end. So this was… kind of like the first time really seeing it… but knowing the basic story. It’s a mother in a palatial estate with her two young children… and her husband has been away at war, but she hasn’t heard back… and her estate needs some care… so some caretakers answer a call into town & help her out. Her children have an allergy to light… so for their sake the estate is very dark & generally creepy… but then some other unexplained things start happening. Ghostly things…

Now, the movie was pretty good. Aside from the sound being memorably bad with the voices being REALLY quiet and the other sound effects being REALLY loud to basically give ever meaningless thing jump scares… there is some great suspense built… and it’s an intriguing kind of character study. Are there ghosts? Is the mother just insane? It’s a lot like “The Babadook” if it were set in a different time. That being said… if you’re going to watch one of the two… “The Babadook” is still streaming too. “The Others” was a lot better than I remember (though I love a good nap) but it’s another good movie if you’re not into gore but enjoy a good haunted house flick. Check it out!

Right after that, we watched a 1990 movie called “Nightbreed” from director Clive Barker (“Hellraiser” & “Lord of Illusions”) and starring Craig Sheffer & David Cronenberg (yes, the director of “Dead Zone”, “The Fly” remake, “History of Violence”, etc). This movie is about a young man named Aaron Boone (Sheffer) who is having terrible dreams… so he’s been going to a therapist (Cronenberg) to get his dreams & violent urges under control. Then one day, the police come to the therapist’s office… and there’s been a serial killer on the loose with killings matching Aaron’s dream descriptions almost to the word… so to find answers, Aaron starts asking around about a place in his dreams called Midian… and he finds out some pretty startling things in his journey. Okay, I’m just going to come out and say it… there are monsters involved… and it’s not a spoiler alert because they’re teased as the credits are rolling & in his dreams the first few minutes. This movie was pretty dang interesting… and I really enjoyed it. Now, I’ll warn you up front that it’ll probably seem REALLY weird to today’s audience because the makeup is pretty fantastic & not CGI… some of the backdrops are almost obviously paintings… there are a few cumbersome oddities like that… but it really just adds to the atmosphere of the whole movie being in a borderline dreamscape & keeps you on edge with regards to what’s going to happen. The monsters are also greatly designed& REALLY inventive… and yeah, there’s even a few titty shots. Enjoy!!!

About the only beef that I have with this movie… isn’t even with the movie… it’s with the Academy Awards committee. As I mentioned before, the makeup & special effects in this movie are pretty damn impressive, especially by 1990 standards. However, any guesses to what movie won the Academy Award for Best Makeup that year (1990)? Well… let’s start with the nominees that didn’t win… and this movie wasn’t even nominated though it really should have been. First up was legendary makeup & effects specialist Stan Winston for “Edward Scissorhands” which… yeah, the love of Vincent Price comes into play again, I can see that. Then there was “Cyrano de Bergerac” (basically the French adaptation of the novel that inspired Steve Martin’s “Roxanne”) where they essentially put everybody in feudal French garb and gave Gerard Depardieu an even bigger nose. Okay? What possible masterpiece of a movie could beat them both AND this movie? Why it’s “Dick Tracy” in which everybody wore essentially the same outfit in vibrant Crayola colors so that you could tell them apart… and they have Al Pacino a big nose… made Paul Sorvino look like he had a stroke… squared off the top of William Forsythe’s head… made Dustin Hoffman look like mumbling Javier Bardem in “Skyfall” and even made R.G. Armstrong’s face (star of last entry’s “Children of the Corn” oddly enough) look like a nut sack as a guy named Pruneface. AWARD WINNING MAKEUP!!! Anyway… it just irked me that “Dick Tracy” won an Academy Award for makeup… and yes, the award also takes into account wardrobe & hair styling for some reason… but let’s be real… it’s not impressive in any aspect of the award. So yeah, check out “Nightbreed”! I think you’ll like it.

Last movie of the day… “Creep” starring Mark Duplass (“The League”) and writer/director/actor/caterer Patrick Brice. This story is about a videographer named Aaron (Brice) who answers a Craigslist ad for a one-day job in a remote California mountain town. He meets his employer Joseph (Duplass) who tells them that he has an expectant wife… and an inoperable brain tumor with only a few months to live… so he just wants Aaron to follow him around for a few hours and document this video so that his unborn child has something to remember his father by. You know… like that Michael Keaton movie “My Life” from the 90’s. However, Aaron starts to suspect things are a little odd… and things aren’t quite what they seem. No, this is another found-footage movie… and of course the movies have their limitations & some disbelief is involved. “Why the hell is he videotaping this scene?” However, this movie is pretty good about that… and there’s no additional score… it’s a very minimalistic approach… and for a scant 77 minute runtime, I would highly recommend it. Don’t want to give anything else away. It’s streaming now! Great flick!

What I wouldn’t really recommend… is watching six seasons of “The League” in the past few weeks to catch your girlfriend up… and then watch this movie… because you’ll totally see this as like a long special episode of “The League” and one of the greatest & creepiest pranks of all time. I honestly would not be surprised if this movie was condensed a little bit and shot almost frame for frame with either a creepy version of Pete… or just replace him with Rafi taking things a little overboard as he’s prone to do. Oh, you haven’t seen “The League”? Then this probably doesn’t affect you… but it certainly did for us. Watch both “Creep” and “The League”!

So yeah… that was a LOT of movies… but yeah, a bunch of spooky movies that you can still enjoy on Netflix this Halloween season. Go forth & check them out!!! I’ll be helping to move family members across the state… yay!!! Have a great weekend everybody!!!

I've Lived the Life of a Man

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Sunday after blogging last time, I watched yet another ESPN 30 for 30 documentary entitled “No Mas” about the historically awkward boxing match in November 1980 between Sugar Ray Leonard & Roberto Duran. The movie is the story of Ray (and everybody else) looking for answers as to exactly what happened 33 years earlier. A little background for you… in 1980, Sugar Ray Leonard was seen as the pretty boy champion of boxing with his flashy moves, incredible smile & marketability. Then along comes this Panamanian boxer by the name of Roberto Duran whose nickname is “Hands of Stone” and just has a gruff, determined underdog look on his face the whole time… and basically with some tutelage from promoter Don King… he starts talking a LOT of sh*t leading up to their inevitable match. Think the premise of “Rocky III” with the great Clubber Lang talking sh*t to Adrian at a press conference for Rocky’s statue… cuz that kinda happened between Duran-Leonard in real life. Anyway, they fought… and Roberto Duran won the EPIC first fight in a decision… and was the champion of the world & Panama’s favorite son. So the inevitable rematch came just a few months later (different times back then), but Duran was living the high life in Panama & New York City, was rumored to be out of shape, Leonard had the “Eye of the Tiger” as it were… and basically in the 8th round, with Sugar Ray out to a comfortable lead on points& just showing off pretty much… Roberto Duran did the absolutely unthinkable… he said “No mas” (“No more”) and just QUIT in the middle of the fight… and the boxing world LOST THEIR F**KING MINDS!!! You don’t quit!?! Fighters don’t just quit?!? QUIT??? WHAT??? Anyway, if you’re interested in boxing history, check it out… I ugh… it’s not for everybody. I’m not going to lie. It’s one of those 30 for 30 that’s primarily for sports fans… where they have the ones that are more for everybody (like “Survive & Advance”). It was pretty good though.

Sunday night, Izzy & I watched one of her mom’s favorite movies of all time that we stumbled upon on Netflix from 1947 entitled “The Ghost & Mrs. Muir” starring the legendary Rex Harrison (“Doctor Doolittle”, “Cleopatra”, “My Fair Lady”, “Agony & the Ecstasy”, etc) & “Heaven Can Wait” hottie Gene Tierney. The story is set in 1900 near London where a young widow (Tierney) rents a beautiful seaside cottage in the countryside… and finds out that it’s haunted by a salty sea captain (Harrison). Now, instead of getting scared off by the captain’s shenanigans… she’s intrigued by him… and they start to form a relationship… and she writes down his life story for a biography (where the term “ghost writer” comes from?) to sell to a publisher to help her afford & stay at the cottage. I don’t think I need to tell you that… she starts to fall in love with the full apparition… but alas, she is a young supple widow… and he is a floating pile of charismatic ecoplasm, so they can never be… or can they? I thought this movie was a great little treat & I can see why Izzy’s mom loves it… and I’m probably going to using my Rex Harrison voice for the next week or so because… why the hell not? I highly recommend this movie if you can handle black & white as well as stirring dialogue.

Okay, so one of my favorite things about watching old movies… is not only listening to the writing because… it’s SO completely different that most of what you hear in movies today. The characters & actors actually seem educated. I know… mind blown. On top of that though, I like to think how it would be if they tried to release this movie nowadays… and whether it’d work. For this one, I could just see the trailer in your head… and start rolling my eyes almost immediately. Picture if you will… a beautiful isolated seaside cottage, waves crashing, a motorcar pulls up and out steps Olivia Wilde (with an English accent) in turn of the century garb gazing up this vision of a cottage with those giant eyes of hers… then the real estate agent played by Chris O’Dowd takes her through the house, giving the details of the estate in a nervous manner… and then it happens, the ghost BELLOWS… sending Chris O’Dowd in a cowardly jaunt, shutting the door behind him with the lady inside (fun fact: pulled straight from the movie). She then follows him outside… and he spills the beans about the previous owners… including the captain who allegedly committed suicide. Wake up… the sh*t gets good in a minute! After the warnings, she looks at the cottage… smirks… and says “I’ll take it (or the proper English alternative)” Then she’s arranging her belongings in her new home, maybe a shot of her daughter prancing around… and then, the ghost bellows again. “I’m not afraid of you! We’re just going to have to learn to live with one another!” Then the ghost reveals himself… HUGH LAURIE!!! That’s right, I’m starting Hugh Laurie’s return to movies… in the role he was BORN to play. It doesn’t care where the movie goes from there… that’s your trailer… and the title… wait for it… “Ghost Writer.” You’re welcome, Hollywood! By the way, I didn't realize that they were on "House" together until I tried to find a picture of them together... incredible coincidence. I never watched "House" but it's still a great idea...

But $teve, what is this movie that you’re pitching? Is it a stupid ass rom-com across dimensions & time like “The Lake House”? Or just a comedy about a ghost who helps out a family like “Ghost Dad” was supposed to be? OH!!! I know… it’s a supernatural thriller where Mrs. Muir helps the Ghost Captain to find his murderer!!! HOLY SH*T WE’RE MAKING A PERIOD PIECE REMAKE OF “GHOST” WITH OLIVIA WILDE & HUGH LAURIE!!! Quick!!! See if Kerry Washington is available to play the carnival medium who can communicate with… oh wait, shoot, she can already see & talk to him… we gotta work a black woman in here somehow for demographics… OOH!!! She has a servant, right? (hiss) Wait, never mind… that’s not going to work… we don’t need that kinda guff from the NAACP…” Hold on, Hollywood!!!! Stop right there. You’re jumping the gun on this awesomeness… and this is why I kinda like older movies, it’s actually about the story… and it’s open for interpretation. Yes, this movie will seem a little dated in many ways… but it’s nothing incredibly awkward (except maybe one scene where there was a guy at the beach standing awfully close & behind Mrs. Muir’s daughter Anna after carving her name in a plank) just a little slower pace, there’s a complex relationship going on with seeds of simplicity that everyone can relate too, a complete & utter lack of explosions… it’s just a good story, probably based on a play or something since there’s only like 2-3 locations, but it’s weird to think how movies like this was completely BOMB at the box office for the most part. Oh well, that’s what Netflix is for I guess. Good luck with this one, Hollywood!!!

Monday night, we watched “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” starring… well, the only guy that I really recognized was the evil CEO/President from “Robocop” playing… well, spoiler alert, an evil CEO/President. The main guy (played by Tom Atkins) seemed to be a poor man’s Dennis Farina but pretty good… and it was written/directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, the guy who brought us “Stephen King’s IT” (insert Tim Curry clown joke). It’s the 3rd installment of John Carpenter’s classic “Halloween” movies… except this one doesn’t have Michael Myers, the unstoppable killing machine from the first two. No… they just went completely separate from this one. Why? Apparently John Carpenter wanted to stop making the pseudonymous slasher flick & get back to the title… Halloween. No more drunk teenagers being stupid & getting chopped in half… no, this time around it’s getting back to what makes the season of Halloween so special… commercialism. Oh, and mass murder of course. The main story really starts out with a man brutally murdered as he lay in his hospital bed by a mysterious silent assassin, who then casually walks out of the hospital, goes into his car, pours gasoline all over himself, lights a match, Michael Bay explosion! The doctor wants answers! The hot daughter of the victim wants answers too! So they team up to find answers… and what’s their clue? A Halloween mask… and the man’s dying words, “They’re going to kill us all!” Who? Who’s going to kill us? Why? How? When? I’ll stop it right there… and please feel free to check it out. It’s not a great movie… but it’s a good little Halloween flick… and it’s really fitting for the season too. It seems to be John Carpenter’s stab at the commercialism of Halloween, mocking the whole materialism of the holiday vs. it’s original meanings (or at least one interpretation of it) and it’s even complete with the catchiest jingle you’ll ever hear & some masks that… frankly I kinda want one… they look like top quality stuff, especially compared to most of today’s masks. You missed this year’s Halloween screening… but maybe put it on the list for next year.

I’m not going to spoil anything about this movie because I think you should check it out with some friends for a few laughs… but there’s one part in particular that really gets me. Around the end of act two, the Doctor & the Hot Daughter pose as a married couple at one point… and check into a motel room. Yes, immediately I heard the washboard from the bow-chicka-bow-wow music as they drove the car into the parking lot too… but they kinda gave it a decent amount of time for their relationship to develop (about 45 seconds) before they hit the skins. Normally that doesn’t bother me… but it’s just when you really think about the context that it really starts to get to me. “Oh doctor old enough to be my father with an ex-wife & 2.3 kids of his own, I know that my father died from his face being ripped off because I had to identify the body earlier today (wait, how did she do that again?)… and I know that we’re looking for his killers in an entire city filled with possible company agents… but you I should’ve told you when you brought me to this horribly designed motel room that nothing gets me hotter than the combination of family tragedy, gore, 80’s moustaches, floral pattern bedspreads, imminent danger & fairly wealthy replacement father figures… get inside of me!” You probably don’t even need a flashback to know her backstory… the real question is when’s her next shift at the Hungry I Club? Or was it the father or creepy uncle that molested her? Too far? Maybe… but yeah, that’s just how my mind goes in ridiculous situations… to ridiculous conclusions.

Tuesday night, I FINALLY watched "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" after... well, it flopped at the box office & I think only had one showing in the Bay Area when it came out in September... but yeah, it stars a lot of people including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Eva Green, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke and others. This is the long awaited (like... nine years) prequel to the original "Sin City" directed by Robert Rodiguez & graphic novel creator Frank Miller. I could tell you the plots... but honestly, it's a healthy mix of odd noir storytelling with plenty of narration, superstrong mythical figures with obvious weaknesses, bad guys that keep drilling in the fact that they're pure evil incarnate, and the real star of the show... VENGEANCE!!! If you haven't seen the original, go check it out... like right NOW!!! As for the sequel, I'd saw check it out if you liked the original... that being said...

What I Liked:
  • Straight out of the Comics - The movie is beautifully shot (yes, I know it's green screen) and looks like it's ripped right out of the graphic novel that it's based on. It's essentially black & white... with a few accents of color (more than the original) but overall... absolutely beautiful.
  • The Cameos - There are some great cameos in this movie... Powers Boothe is a pretty prominent role in this movie but there's also a day or two of shooting from Jeremy Piven, Christopher Lloyd, Ray Liotta, Dennis Haybert, Juno Temple, Lady Gaga, Christopher Meloni, Jamie King, Jamie Chung, and the great Bruno (Bruce Willis) among others.
  • Rated R - Now, the movie is rated R... and for good reason as nobody under 18 should see this movie probably... but for as ultra violent & strong in adult themes & situations as it is... the blood is just white splotches... the language isn't nearly as bad as it probably could be... lots of language degrading to women but it's no Scorsese production.

What I Didn't Like:
  • The Whole Johnny Storyline - Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Johnny... a gambler who can't lose... and not to spoil the whole storyline... but I think it was just 20 minutes of filler that means absolutely nothing to the rest of the movie... or really anything of interest or art noir or anything really... other than "Hey its JGL in this movie & sh*t happens.
  • Stacy Keach Cameo - When I saw Stacy Keach's name in the intro sequence... I was totally hyped. Then... he was allegedly in the movie... at least his voice was... and a SH*TTON OF FLUFFY!!! Think Fat Bastard + the whole Klump family and movie it all into the face like he's a Carnivale float... pretty disappointed. Oh... and it's for less than a minute I think. If it's the only way to get Stacy Keach into this movie then... ugh... I hope he made a lot of money.
  • Not as Enthralling as the Original - Now, I know the original has its flaws & I can accept that... but this prequel just was not enthralling. It seemed like... even the music was turned down... all of the male characters in the movie as complete idiots & all of the women are evil and/or stupid tricks... I almost kinda want to root for the incredibly despicable evil bastards that apparently run Sin City. Overall, I'd say check it out... but not as good as the original & obviously has it's flaws.
Anyway, that’ll do it for this entire of movie reviews… hopefully you find them informative… or at the very least entertaining. Later this week, more beer related activities… so until next time, have a great day everybody!!!

Halloween Weekend 2014

Thursday night & Friday morning at work, we (mostly my coworker Sopastar) made a pumpkin for a pumpkin decorating contest between departments... and here are just some of the amazing examples... you're welcome...

Friday night was our first Halloween Party of the weekend… and Izzy & I were providing two 5-gallon kegs of some of our finest beer to date… the Pumpkin Chocolate Porter & the Pumpkin Pie Ale 2.0. Basically we were traveling with about 80 pints of premium homebrew and were ready to get some people f**king DRUNK!!!

Now for our costume… the last two years we were basically Waldeaux (the New Orleans version of Waldo) and Carmen Sandiego… but we decided to do something a little different this year… and we went as… obscure cartoon characters from a decade ago. Remember “Drawn Together”? Of course you do… it’s an incredible Comedy Central cartoon… well, Izzy went as Ling Ling, an Asian trading card battle monster… and I went as Spanky Ham, a crass internet download who farts on retards… Google it!!!

Saturday morning was our event for National Learn to Homebrew Day… and we actually had a pretty good turnout of about 12 people (pats self on back for guess the other day) and it was a mix of people who had done a handful of batches before & people just interested in the idea but didn't know much about it... so Izzy & I did a great job of answering questions, showing how easy it all can be (as we were hosting a fantastic party WHILE making beer) and everybody brought some great potluck items to share. Basically we made a quick pale ale extract recipe & transferred our imperial stout to secondary. Here are some pictures...

Save the date for next's year Learn to Homebrew Day on November 7th, 2015!!! Apparently it's the first Saturday of November annually... which just worked out pretty well this year with Halloween. After everybody left, J-Mo showed up for LTHD apparently forgetting that it was 11 AM, not 5:30 PM... but we caught up and shared crazy stories from the past few months... and apparently, there may be a pretty epic Disneyland trip coming up soon... but details on the way. Good seeing J-Mo though!

Saturday Night, we had Izzy’s friend Sid’s Party over in Sacramento… and brought our beer with us too... and it was a HUGE hit! I actually knew about a dozen people at this party this year thanks to seeing them at past parties & random events here & there... but yeah, good time. I know Izzy misses all of her homeys back in Sactown... so I'm perfectly fine with making small talk with random strangers while she mingles... or just sitting back & sipping beer... but yeah, some great peeps she has up there.

Anyway, so yeah, pretty crazy busy Halloween weekend... and I don't really have any pictures of me as Spanky Ham... but as soon as some pop up on the internet, I'll share them with you... in the meantime, here's a preview...

Happy Halloween everybody!!!

Where Should I Go Next?
