No Vick? No Problem

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

What a fantastic weekend! For those of you who are friends on the Facebook, you already know a little bit... but allow me to go into more detail. Saturday, I picked my dad up at the airport, went back to Truckee, and watched some pretty good college football games with my roommate. I think my dad really enjoys spending time with the guys... because well, my stepmom has him on a pretty nice leash. "Hey dad, how's it going? Just thought I'd call and see what you were up to this fine Monday night." "I'm ugh... watching TV." "Oh, so you've been watching the Giants destroy the Bears & Cutler getting thrown around like a rag doll?" "No." "No? Sigh... how's Dancing with the Stars?" "It's okay. Some of these guys are pretty good." "Really? That's not surprising at all... because half of them that aren't professional dancing stars... are professional dancers in boy bands and sh*t. Anyway, it's a pretty good game... especially if you don't like Jay Cutler... might wanna let your Broncos fan master know." "I'll let her know..."

Sunday morning, we woke up and drove to San Francisco through the beautiful Sierra Nevadas. Our first stop was to the hotel... and who was there to greet us at the door... but none other than 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. I am not even joking. He was right there (maybe looking into a future career as a valet once he gets fired from the Niners) at the entrance. I like Mike Singletary. I'm just giving him sh*t because... well, he can take it. I really do want to see him do well... but a career in football is a fickle mistress. So my dad & I were already psyched because apparently... we had found where the team was staying the night before (saw a few large men in the lobby). So we go to check in... and my dad leans over and whispers, "Hey dude, who is that?" motioning behind us. I saw this African-American man, about five-six it seemed, that looking INCREDIBLY familiar... in fact, I knew who it resembled immediately... but didn't want to be involved in some kind of stereotypical "They all look alike" kind of thing. Look, I don't believe in that at all... well, I didn't until I went to China... because they all do look alike there. But after a few seconds, I had the courage to tell him, "I think that's Brian Westbrook." "Who's Brian Westbrook?" At this instant, I thought, "Are you messing with me? I got you a jersey to wear to the game online" but he was just double checking I'm sure. "He's the guy whose jersey we're wearing to the game in a few hours." "That's what I thought. Want a picture with him?" He had his luggage and was on his way to the game (as the 4th string running back for the Niners after a great career with my Eagles) so I didn't want to mess with it... but my dad had other plans...

"Excuse me, are you Brian Westbrook?" "Yeah." "Nice to meet you. My son & I just came down for the game and we're actually wearing your Eagles jersey to the game tonight, so this is kinda weird." "Yeah." We all shook hands and introduced ourselves... and long story short, I met Brian Westbrook... and here's a picture... which apparently was taken in an all-encompassing angelic glow...

So yeah, my dad was SUPER stoked about that... and I was too... but I have a volume control when it comes to that stuff and was playing it pretty cool. Then it was time to head out to Candlestick Park for some tailgating. Now, I didn't have a grill or anything like that... but I did have Gretchen & plenty of Hornsby's Apple Ciders... along with ingredients for Copper Camels so... yeah, we were pretty good. Here are some pictures...
Not wearing shoulder pads, just an awkward position...

After a few hours of wandering about and trading banter with fellow drunken fans for both sides, we made our way from the parking lot to the park... and it's pretty impressive in my opinion... but you be the judge...

What can I say about the game that hasn't already been etched in folklore? The Eagles were dominating the game despite a fairly average performance from Kevin Kolb... but after a big f**kup by 49ers quarterback (and U of U alum) Alex Smith, we were up 24-10. The crowd around us started chanting, "WE WANT CARR!!! WE WANT CARR!!!" referring to backup quarterback David Carr. Well, coach Singletary gave Alex Smith a talking to... and then he led them on two touchdown scoring drives bringing the score to 27-24 with a few minutes left. At this time, in an obviously joking fashion, my dad & I started chanting, "WE WANT CARR!!! WE WANT CARR!!!" Nobody else laughed... but hey, we did. Long story short, the Eagles won by that final score of 27-24... and the 49ers record is now 0-5. Glad that a former U alum could get a little redemption... but they still lost. Great game.

Here's the thing that I didn't like about Candlestick Park. There were a number of different ways to get in... but they closed all but one way out... and it went through a residential area with only one lane each way (but as mentioned, the other way was blocked off for some reason). What the hell? Even after waiting an hour for the stadium to clear out, we were still stuck in traffic for another hour... to go one mile... to the freeway onramp. Once on the freeway, we went ten miles in ten minutes to the hotel... but yeah, maybe they should fix that. Just a heads up before you move to the new stadium in Santa Clara in a few years.

That night, we had a good buzz going... but my dad is also over a half-century now... so he was dozing off by 9 PM... so we just ordered some room service sandwiches and chilled at the hotel. I wandered around a bit... but there really wasn't much to see except airplanes. The next day, we woke up, drove back across California, dropped my dad off in Reno, then I went home and watched yet more football. Not a bad weekend at all. Oh... and I've been catching up with work pretty much ever since... but hey, only two more weeks until my New Orleans adventure... and I'm sure there will be plenty more adventures between now and then. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the weekend a bit... and maybe next time you'll want to go to an Eagles game with me and meet a few of your favorite players (both of you reading this who know anything about football). Have a great day everybody!!!

Enter the Tigeress

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

The weekend is upon us… and so you probably won’t hear from me for a couple of days with my dad visiting and football to be had… but I’ll have pictures when I return… so please, dry your eyes. Some really tragic stuff going on in the news like that spill of red toxic byproducts from an aluminum plant in Hungary that threatens to endanger everybody along the Danube with poisoned drinking water, a passage of power in North Korea (hopefully to somebody less crazy & sexually ambiguous) but you know I tend to stay away from that stuff… so here’s my news…

Flooding in India – Give it a second… and it won’t be nearly as heartbreaking as Hungary. For those who don’t know, the Commonwealth Games are kind of like… the Olympics of the British Empire. Well, they were held in India this year… and it led to a few problems for the host city. Thousands of flushed condoms threaten to choke the Commonwealth Games village's drainage system, media reports said, in the latest problem to hit the venue from hidden snakes (Apocalypse!!!) to outbreaks of dengue. Games organizers, who won a race against time to ready the village, are now battling to clear clogged drains after thousands of non-biodegradeable contraceptives were flushed down toilets in the first week of the event. "If that is happening, it shows that there is use of condoms and I think that is a very positive story. Athletes are being responsible," Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennell told a news conference Thursday. "We all know that encouraging safe sex is a very important thing to do." Games organizers had provided 8,000 free condoms in the village, and the provision appears to be in high demand. One official told the Mail Today newspaper Thursday that over 4,000 had already been snapped up by eager athletes. Shoddy construction work, fears over an outbreak of dengue fever and worries about security had meant many teams delayed their move into the village before the Games began. However, blame for the latest problem lies firmly with the athletes. Following a decision to provide free condoms at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, it has become something of a tradition. At the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, athletes quickly used up the 70,000 free condoms provided, forcing organizers to supply another 20,000, while at the 2004 Games in Athens, the provision was doubled to 130,000. At both the Beijing Games in 2008, and the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, 100,000 condoms were provided for athletes. Did your high school coach try to convince you to not “release yourself” before a big game? Well, obviously it doesn’t really have an effect as long as you get plenty of sleep afterwards. An entire city in India is being crippled by condoms. Pretty funny, right? Sigh… it’s been so long…

Pepe Le Pew – Everybody knows that Pepe Le Pew is the epitomy of the smooth Casanova who just tries too hard… and thus, is one of my favorite Warner Bros. characters. I mean… the guy speaks French and is a perfect gentleman… but he’s completely unaware of any odor problems that he may have. Sound like anybody you know? Well, Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a combination live-action/CG-animated movie (like "Alvin and the Chipmunks") featuring Pepe Le Pew, the lovelorn French skunk and Looney Tunes character reports Vulture. Mike Myers (“Shrek” & “Cat in the Hat” among his kiddie flicks) will voice the overly amorous skunk who starred in over a dozen animated short films for the studio and will be the sole CG character in this aside from Penelope Pussycat (can you say that on a PG-rated movie?), the mute and reluctant object of his affection. Everything else will be live-action. The film is part of a new strategy by the studio to reinvigorate the Looney Tunes cast of characters (since Brendan Fraser destroyed the franchise like everything else he touches). I’m just playing. I like some of the Brendan Fraser movies. Hmm… maybe I’ll have to do a Movie List of him one of these days… but too many Flush Its, I think. Might back up the internet’s recycling system like condoms in a village in India. See? A few minutes ago, that would’ve made no sense (probably still doesn’t). Anyway, it could be worse. Then again, maybe Brendan Fraser will star as the live action character in this movie. We shall see.

Angelina Update – Speaking of movies that could be really enjoyable to watch… "Amores Perros" and "Babel" scribe Guillermo Arriaga revealed word on an unexpected but exciting team-up. Seems Arriaga revealed that location scouting begins in Russia next month on "The Tiger", an adaptation of John Vaillant's non-fiction tome which he has scripted and is in development at Focus Features and Random House's film divison. Set in 1997, the story follows an animal activist who must protect the small Siberian town he is in when a tiger begins attacking its inhabitants (oooh… sounds like “The Ghost & the Darkness” but with tigers in Siberia). When previously announced, Darren Aronofsky ("Requiem for a Dream", “The Fountain” & “The Wrestler”) was attached as director while Brad Pitt was slated to both star and produce. Arriaga not only confirms that… but adds that Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie will co-star in the film which will shoot sometime next year (probably as the bloodthirsty Tiger herself, that dangerous vixenous beauty). This past week Aronofsky has been linked to both the "Wolverine" sequel and as a candidate for "Tales Of The Gangster Squad" at Warners. How his scheduling works out in coming months we'll have to wait and see… but I’ll tell you what, I’m intrigued. Think of it… Mr & Mrs Smith together again… with the director of Pi… with the same story as Ghost & the Darkness… but set in a James Bond-esque location… with tigers… and there’s only one REALLY good way to keep warm in Siberia. Oh, got you excited now, didn’t I? Well, we shall see if this comes to be as well…

Also, I think that I’ve come up with the most awesomest Halloween costume EVER!!! But I don’t want to share it with any of you… because it will spoil the surprise when you see pictures of it in the Big Easy. I want to give a big shout-out to JJ for mentioning it. She truly is a ray of sunshine… and one of the few people that I KNOW reads this thing still so… BIG shout-out!!! Anyway, hanging with my dad for the next few days so… have a great weekend everybody!!! FLYYYY EAGLES FLYYYYYY!!!

Top Destinations in the USA

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Well, the weekend is finally here… and my dad arrives tomorrow morning for our dude’s weekend out including an Eagles-49ers game at Candlestick Park. It should be EPIC!!! You know, I’ve always had my suspicions since I moved out here that I was pretty much perfectly situated to enjoy a lot of what this great world has to offer. Well, now I have confirmation. You see, this morning, I received a pair of emails from coworkers… the first was from the Huffington Post, where Lake Tahoe was ranked #1 as the most beautiful lake in all of the WORLD!!! Check out some of the competition (including Lake Titicaca) that we beat out. Nice, right? Well, shortly after, this one was sent for Trip Advisor that listed the Top 25 Destination in the United States… and long story short, 6 of the top 12 are in Northern California including #1 – San Francisco and #2 – Lake Tahoe. Here’s the full list so that you can enjoy it as well…

  1. San Francisco – I think Bubbles would agree, there’s always something to do there. Besides, what place could possibly compare to Lake Tahoe? If I had to live in a big city, I could definitely see myself living in a city like San Fran. Very easily.
  2. Lake Tahoe – SURPRISE!!!
  3. San Diego– Ah yes, Heaven!!! Many a wonderful vacations to this beachly paradise and I really couldn’t argue if this were higher on the list. I mean… if you’re looking for beaches & sunshine EVERYDAY, this is where to go.
  4. Washington D.C. – Our nation’s capital city is pretty cool too. Been there twice in the winter, though seasonably warm. Lots of great monuments and things to do… and I always think of Forrest & Jenny when I tell people about our nation’s capital.
  5. Chicago – Never been here (except the airport a few times) but hear great things.
  6. Seattle – The Emerald City is really a nice place. I too could see myself living there… and you know how I love the rain.
  7. Big Sur, CA – Now, I may have to check this place out again because… the weather was bad when I checked it out last time… and it didn’t seem like much… but maybe I just wasn’t exploring the right places due to the weather.
  8. New York City – Skyscrapers and EVERYTHING!!! Been there twice too, great to visit, would never want to live there probably.
  9. Carmel, CA – Another stop on my road trip this last spring… and it’s amazing.
  10. Sedona, AZ – I’m sure it’s awesome by desert standards… but yeah, never been there.
  11. Monterey – Isn’t this place adjacent to Carmel? Also breathtakingly beautiful…
  12. Napa, CA – Should really plan a Wine Country trip out there with Bubbles one of these days…
  13. Austin, TX – I’m sure it’s better than Dallas… and I like what I’ve seen in Robert Rodriguez movies.
  14. Boston – Birthplace of our nation… and if it weren’t for those accents, it’d probably be higher on the list. Really cool place with a lot of history by U.S. standards.
  15. New Orleans – You know it would be higher on my list. THREE WEEKS AWAY!!!
  16. Grand Canyon – The only natural formation in America photographed more than Emerald Bay here on Lake Tahoe. Who would’ve thought a big hole in the ground would be so magnificent?
  17. Denver – Lived there for six months, lots of fun stuff to do, not bad for a city.
  18. Colorado Springs – No idea…
  19. Boulder, CO – Ugh… the definition of hippie college town. Love it.
  20. Charleston, SC – I really would love to go see this place. The stories on the news out of South Carolina never cease to amaze me, so it’d be great to meet the people.
  21. Portland, OR – I hear it’s like Seattle only… actually I hear it’s EXACTLY like Seattle.
  22. Anchorage, AK – The Last Frontier. Maybe be going on a cruise there soon… but yeah, seen “Into the Wild” so not really looking to get THAT out there.
  23. Santa Barbara, CA – As seen on the hit USA series “Psych”
  24. Rocky Mountains – If you like mountains, this is the place to be…
  25. Yosemite – Only three hours away… and magnificent.

Not a bad list, right? A few places that weren’t included… Salt Lake City (or Utah period), Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Vermont, Twin Falls… and most surprisingly, NO LAS VEGAS!!! Why do I mention these? No reason. Then again, Yosemite BARELY made it onto the list. Thank you Trip Advisor. Though I do wonder if you’re headquartered in California or Colorado…

Some other big news on the vacation front is that I will again have a three week hiatus around my birthday where I will be unemployed during the “shoulder” season here in the Tahoe area. What does this mean? Well… besides that I’ll probably have to deal with the BS of filing for unemployment if I choose to do that this year, it means that I’ll have three weeks to do whatever and go wherever I want (or rather can afford to go). Here are some options that instantly popped into my head:

  1. Another EPIC Road Trip down the Pacific Coast – This time though, maybe I’ll have some more company, like Bubbles hitching a ride down through Napa, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Hearst Castle and Hollywood, then fly back as I continue onto Mexico or something. You never know.
  2. Another EPIC Road Trip down the Pacific Coast - This time though, maybe I’ll go north towards Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Whistler, etc. and come back through Spokane, Calgary, Idaho, Montana, Yellowstone, etc. on the way to Utah.
  3. European Vacation – I did say that Amsterdam for the 30th birthday would be the dream… and while over there for a few weeks, I could use the train & ferry system to stop by Brussels, Copenhagen, Berlin, Oslo, Prague, wherever else I can work into that time. Again, company would be nice…
  4. Family Cruise – During the family reunion last month, we reminisced about our cruise a few years back from LA to San Diego, Catalina & Ensenada. I think that we need to do something like this again… but this time, I’m thinking we need to up the stakes. I’m thinking… leave from the Port of New Orleans (after a few days of the Big Easy) on a Caribbean cruise to places like Costa Maya, Belize, Isla Roatan or over to the Bahamas. The best part… they have those cruises there during that time. It’s quite doable.
  5. Recharge the Batteries – Anything is possible… even sitting at home without a care in the world and just relaxing. Though this is probably the least likely of the options thus far, if the company’s nice… you never know. Since hiking in the mud and kayaking on snow runoff are the options around here though, it’s highly unlikely.

So yeah, I have six months to figure that part out… but first thing’s first. Football & male bonding this weekend, hopefully a date (and female bonding?) later in the week, get things squared away for the upcoming winter season, spend a week hanging out with Filly & Friends in New Orleans. Not a bad way to spend the month. Anyway, enough of that… here’s some news…

This Week at Auction How much would you pay for this vase? By the way, I pronounced that “vace” not “vaaaz” or whatever. If I said a few hundred bucks, have I lost you already? It’s pretty nice, right? What if I were to tell you that it was from the Qing Dynasty? Does that mean anything to you? Didn’t think so. In this case, it just means that it was made in the 18th century during the last dynasty of China. Now do I have you bidding in the thousands? Yeah? How about a million bucks? Would you pay one million dollars for this vase? No? Sigh… well, you just missed on a golden opportunity because this Chinese Qing dynasty vase sold for HK$253 million ($32.4 million) in a Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong on Thursday, a world record at auction for any Chinese porcelain. "This is definitely a milestone," Nicolas Chow, the Deputy Chairman of Sotheby's Asia told Reuters. "Chinese works of art took their place on the world auction stage today." While segments of the Chinese art market cooled substantially during the financial crisis, especially once white-hot Chinese contemporary art, older paintings and imperial antiques continued to generate solid demand and prices, though fewer quality works surfaced as sellers stayed away on still fragile sentiment. In Sotheby's current autumn sales, however, a selection of rare works from four major private collections and a flood of free-spending Chinese millionaires, contributed to what many called one of the best sales of Chinese ceramics in recent years. In a packed auction hall filled with applauding mainland Chinese buyers, a bidding war saw the rare Qing vase finally go to Alice Cheng, a Hong Kong collector and sister of renowned octogenarian Chinese art collector and dealer Robert Chang. "I'm very happy," said Cheng. "As long as you like something, even if it's expensive it's worth it," she told reporters. Truer words may have never been spoken. The price was more than the about $28 million paid for a 14th century blue and white porcelain jar sold by Christie's in 2005, though less than a calligraphy scroll by Song dynasty poet Huang Tingjian (1045-1105 AD) that sold for around $64 million at a June Beijing auction by Chinese auctioneers Beijing Poly. Repeat: A nearly thousand year old calligraphy scroll sold for around $64 million. The globular yellow-ground Qing vase, decorated with flowers and golden emblems for longevity, is an exemplar of the so-called "famille rose" family of Qing vases that have been among the most highly sought after works among wealthy Chinese in recent years. "It's astounding," said veteran New York-based dealer James Lally. "I feel this is not a bubble. We've seen so much depth to this market. We're stunned because there's no precedent for it." Fired in the 18th century during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, the gourd-shaped vase has an impeccable provenance and put up for sale by longtime collector J.T. Tai. "I can safely say there has not been a famille rose vase of a finer quality in the last 10 or 15 years," said Sotheby's Chow. In other signs of the Chinese art market's ebullience at the top end, a pair of famille rose "floral medallion" vases sold for HK$140 million ($18 million) while a Qing white jade "Xintian Zhuren" seal, sourced from a reclusive overseas Chinese collector, made $16 million, a world record for an imperial seal. A collection of Ming imperial bronzes from the collection of Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter, also performed strongly, with a seated Tibetan gilt bronze figure fetching $3.5 million. "Every so often something like this happens," said Nader Rasti, a London art dealer. "A psychological barrier has been broken," he said of the blockbuster prices. Sigh… you know where a LOT of that money that China has is coming from, right? Well, it’s still amazing what people will pay for old pots & pans. Oooh, it’s a 400 year old porcelain vase that was once owned by a child emperor. Whoopty-doo… I can go to Pier 1 Imports and get something exactly like that for about $40. They’re still in business, right? Haven’t done a lot of decorating lately. Anyway, hopefully Ms. Cheng doesn’t have buyer’s remorse already. Congratulations on your monumental purchase! Sigh… what am I going to do for Christmas?

Santa-Free Christmas? – Could you imagine? Christmas without Santa Claus? Then again, it may be a Godsend in these tough economic times. Think about it. We just… forget about Santa, focus the holiday on helping others rather than buying tons of useless crap for one another… and Christmas is super awesome again. In Germany, a group of Catholics wants to do away with Santa Claus because of the fictional figure's commercial hype and replace him with St Nicolas and the selfless giving they say he represents. Even before shops fill with Santa-themed goodies, the Bonifatiuswerk of German Catholics -- a Catholic aid organization -- has begun calling for "Santa Claus-free zones." The organization sees Santa as "an invention of the advertising industry designed to boost sales" and as "a representative of consumer society" who has little to do with the historical figure of St Nicolas (wait until Easter rolls around and they can attack the Easter Bunny). Its website describes Nicolas, the patron saint of children, as "a helper in need who reminds us to be kind, to think of our neighbors, and to give the gift of happiness." The campaign is supported by several German celebrities. "Unlike Santa Claus, Nicolas wants to give children inner riches and not just encourage them to strive for material wealth," German TV presenter Nina Ruege was quoted saying. David Hasselhoff has yet to be reached for comment. So what do you think? Sure, Santa is fun… and who doesn’t want to sit on his jolly fat lap once in a while (right Bone Jr?) but… is he taking the focus away from the Spirit of Christmas? Of giving? I know that personally, I wouldn’t mind going without a single gift this Christmas other than a hug from loved ones. I would much rather bring a smile to somebody’s face by giving them a warm meal and a hot shower than a brand new Lamborghini (that I honestly couldn’t drive around here half the year anyway). Will it catch on? It really has the potential to… but I doubt it. Even in Germany where logic & beer are king & queen. Still… it’s a nice idea. It also makes me think about my family & friends back in Utah and all around the globe. I’m glad that I’m able to visit them a few times a year, including Christmas. I can’t wait to see you all again this coming holiday season. You have no idea how much you all mean to me.

On that note, I’ll call it a day. I’m sitting here staring at my postcards of some of the places I’ve been… and it’s really getting the creative juices going on where to spend the next epic journey in April now that I know that far in advance. If anybody out there is interested in joining me, please let me know and we’ll get it crackilackin’. Man, I haven’t used that word in the longest time. That’s Ice Cube / Westside, right? Geez, that takes me back to high school. By the way, when the hell did Ice Cube go from “Straight Outta Compton” to “Are We There Yet?” Was it a smooth transition or did it just happen all of a sudden on March 14th, 2003 or something? Anyway, have a great night everybody!!!

My Only Comfort is the Night Gone Black

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

So… the thunderstorms have been a plenty and a violent the past few days. I haven’t really seen sunlight for three days up until this morning… and even then it was just when I went to work and was above the fog line. I like it a lot. Sure, the bit of ice on the roads in the mornings is a reminder that winter is once again approaching… but hey, I knew what I was getting into when I moved here. Absolute paradise half the year, and then a winter wonderland the other half… with a few muddy weeks in between, you know, just as a reminder to make sure your snow tires are on & your chains and shovel are back in your vehicle. Let’s see, my dad is flying in on Saturday, football game Sunday night, flying out on Monday. I may have another date some time this next week but… you know, schedules. Three weeks from now I’ll be packing up for a week in New Orleans… and I still don’t have a set Halloween costume. I don’t think that a makeshift Captain Hammer costume is going to fly this year… but hey, I’m fairly clever and resourceful. Hmm… we shall see. Maybe I’ll keep it as a surprise too.

Last night, I finally watched the latest remake of “Alice in Wonderland” by director Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Anne Hathaway and the voices of Alan Rickman & Stephen Fry. You all know the story… with the only twist being that Alice is a teenager in this one… and doesn’t like the life that’s set up for her… so she runs off and falls down the rabbit hole… and the rest is pretty standard to the Disney story from there, just with some cool CGI and pretty entertaining performances from Depp & Carter. It’s quirky and awkward and awesome like most Tim Burton movies. That’s… really all I have to say about it. Not incredible, not horrible, just if you like Tim Burton, it is exactly what you would expect. So yeah… I’m sure if you wanted to see it, you already have… but if not, go ahead and check it out. I’ve got “Labyrinth” to watch tonight through Netflix… hmm… maybe I can go as a taller, sexier David Bowie for Halloween. Sigh… if only I knew how to do that crystal ball juggling stuff like a pro. That’d be sweet. Anyway, here’s the news…

Graphene – So a while back, I told you about this super cool substance that scientists are messing around with called graphene. Well, apparently I wasn’t the only one that thought it was pretty awesome… as they deemed it worthy of a Noble Prize. Why? Well, it is the thinnest and strongest material known to mankind & no thicker than a single atom and 100 times tougher than steel. Could graphene be the next plastic? Maybe so, says one of two scientists who won a Nobel Prize on Tuesday for isolating and studying it. Faster computers, lighter airplanes, transparent touch screens — the list of potential uses runs on. Some scientists say we can't even imagine what kinds of products might be possible with the substance, which hides in ordinary pencil lead and first was extracted using a piece of Scotch tape. Two Russian-born researchers shared the physics Nobel for their groundbreaking experiments with graphene, which is a sheet of carbon atoms joined together in a pattern that resembles chicken wire. Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov of the University of Manchester in England used Scotch tape to rip off flakes of graphene from a chunk of graphite, the stuff of pencil leads. That achievement, reported just six years ago, opened the door to studying what scientists say should be a versatile building block for electronics and strong materials. "It has all the potential to change your life in the same way that plastics did," Geim, 51, a Dutch citizen, told The Associated Press. "It is really exciting." Michael Strano, a chemist at MIT, said trying to predict its uses would be "folly ... We can't even imagine the uses we're going to find." But he and others have some ideas. Graphene's electrical properties mean it might make for faster transistors, key components of electronic circuits, and so lead to better computers, the Nobel committee says. As a single layer of carbon atoms it's tiny, which could pay off in more powerful cell phones, several scientists said. And since it's practically transparent, it could lead to see-through touch screens and maybe solar cells, the committee says. It might even pay off for big TV screens. Its tremendous strength could produce new composite materials that are super-strong and lightweight, for use in building airplanes, cars and satellites, the committee says. So why aren't pencil leads super strong, if they contain graphene? Breaking a lead generally involves a shearing off between graphene sheets rather than breaking the sheets themselves, explained James Tour of Rice University. And while a person can tear up a single sheet of graphene, it's still stronger than a one-atom-thick sheet of anything else. "There's nothing stronger," Tour said. Graphene has not made its mark in ordinary consumer products yet, although some prototype electronic display screens and composite materials have been created, Strano said. Lots of scientists are studying it, in some cases to learn about basic physics, Strano said. Researchers are still trying to find a practical way to make large quantities of pure graphene, something more amenable to large-scale use than the Scotch-tape approach, he said. "The field is still very new," he said, and the awarding of the $1.5 million prize to Geim and Novoselov is "absolutely marvelous." (By the way, Peyton Manning made that on Sunday just for playing the game of football… and probably doubled it with all the commercials he starred in. Stay in school, kids!!!) Joseph Stroscio, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, said he had thought it would take a few more years of scientific appraisal before graphene would win a Nobel. But its potential applications and the brand-new behavior it presents for basic physics have drawn strong interest since the 2004 breakthrough, and the prize is well-deserved, he said. It might take five or 10 years before graphene shows up in products like cell phones, he said. Novoselov, 36, is the youngest Nobel winner since 1973 of a prize that normally goes to scientists with decades of experience. He holds both British and Russian citizenship. Paolo Radaelli, a physics professor at the University of Oxford, marveled at the simple methods the winners used. "In this age of complexity, with machines like the super collider, they managed to get the Nobel using Scotch tape," Radaelli said. Congratulations comrades. Can’t wait to see what marvels will come out of this simplest of atomic arrangements. Oh… and speaking of scientific breakthroughs…

Vegas Death Ray – Not exactly what Tesla had in mind… but it’ll do for today’s technology. Okay, so it’s not really a death ray… but perhaps a slight exaggeration. MGM Resorts International is taking the heat for an intense beam of searing desert sunlight, jokingly dubbed the "death ray," that some hotel guests say poses a risk of severe burns to bathers lounging poolside. The beam is actually a concentrated reflection of solar rays bouncing off the gleaming glass facade of the concave-shaped, high-rise Vdara hotel and condominium, which opened on the Las Vegas "strip" in December (must be CityCentre). Local media, as well as some hotel staff and guests, have come to refer to the reflection as the "death ray," but MGM Resorts officials prefer to call it a "solar convergence phenomenon" which has an obviously less threatening tone to it. "The refraction moves across the pool deck over a period of 90 minutes," company spokesman Gordon Absher told Reuters. "It's never in the same place from day to day or week to week because the sun is changing its elevation in the sky." MGM Resorts, which owns the property, has sought to correct the problem by installing a high-tech solar film over each of the 3,000 glass panes covering the south facade of the Vdara to scatter the rays. But the concentrated sunlight remains hot enough at certain times, in certain spots, to melt plastic and singe hair, said William Pintas, 49, a Chicago lawyer and Vdara condo owner who first encountered the effect earlier after a dip in the pool. When his head started burning, he thought it was from chemicals in the pool. "So I just laid down in the chair, and that's when my back and the back of my legs started burning, and I ran under a nearby umbrella. And I'm under the umbrella and there is no shading from the light or heat," he recounted. "It was the strangest thing." Pintas said he could even smell his hair starting to burn. Astonished and angry, he alerted hotel staff, then called the local newspaper to draw attention to the problem. Absher said MGM Resorts is "now looking into further mitigation procedures," including more umbrellas, additional foliage or shade structures. He said not everyone has complained. On cooler days, he said, he has seen sunbathers deliberately lay their blankets on the convergence spot for additional warmth. But Pintas said he worries that sooner or later, someone will end up seriously burned if they fall asleep in the path of the ray, even if under an umbrella, because as he found the concentrated light can penetrate the shade. "In Vegas, people are out drinking the night before, so it's not hard to imagine people being unconscious there under an umbrella," he said. So what do you think? Is it a Chicago lawyer trying to get some additional scratch? Or a serious concern because they unintentionally somehow found a way to make Vegas even hotter? Death ray may be a bit of an exaggeration… but then again, have you been there in the 115 degree sun? Now add it under a magnifying glass? The point of this story – Don’t stay at Vdara. You know what, don’t even go to Vegas. Come to Reno!!! And while you’re at it, slip on over to Lake Tahoe. We’re free of Death Rays… and at this altitude, intoxication is guaranteed. Sigh… I’m sorry, Vegas. You f**ked me over a few times. I was angry. I do miss you. Hopefully we’ll meet up again shortly.

The Rockets Red Blare – How sure are you that you know all the words to the Star Spangled Banner? Really? THAT sure? Sure enough to risk jail time? In the Philippines, a land of passionate singers, taking on the national anthem is about to get a little more daunting -- get it wrong and you could land in jail for a couple of years and be fined more than $2,000. A ban on the improper singing of Lupang Hinirang (Beloved Land) and unpatriotic displays of the Philippine flag is a Senate vote away from becoming law after the lower house voted 196-0 in favor of it on Monday. Repeat: Something is about to pass through the Filipino government… after a vote of 196 to 0. You probably couldn’t get our congress to agree 196 to 0 that women are people too. Go ahead. Try it. Prove me wrong. Let’s see what Strom Thurman has to say on the subject at the hearing. Anyway, back to the Philippines, "Our Congress has given more teeth to government's campaign to invigorate patriotism, respect and love of country by singing our anthem properly," Representative Salvador Escudero, the bill's principal author, told reporters. He lamented that Filipino artists and singers had been changing the anthem's military march melody and beat, and that the flag had been made into shirts and short pants (and probably underwear). If the Senate passes the law, the first approved by the lower house since the change of administrations in June, violators face up to two years in jail and a fine of 100,000 pesos ($2,280). Okay, now it’s quiz time. “Ooh say can you see / By the dawn’s early light / What so proudly we hail… as the twilight’s last” EEEEH!!! It’s AT the twilight’s last gleaming. Hands behind your head! Pretty messed up, huh? Imagine what they would think about these patriotic wonders…

Bacon Update - October may be Breast Cancer Awareness Month… but it definitely won't be the best month to be a feral hog in the state of Texas. Instead of declaring Bacon Awareness Month, the state's Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples has declared October "Hog Out Month - Get the Hog Outta Texas!" as part of a campaign to eradicate the delicious pests. The campaign aims to get Texans to lock and load and hunt down the animals, which cause widespread damage to farmers and other landowners. "Not only are feral hogs a costly nuisance to agricultural operations and wildlife habitats, but they are increasingly finding their way into urban areas and destroying residents' yards, public parks and golf courses," Staples said in a statement this week when the campaign was unveiled. "On my ranch in East Texas, I have eliminated a number of hogs and I am asking Texans around the state to step up and join the county challenge to learn about feral hogs and how best to legally hunt and trap them in their area," he added. Feral hogs are mostly domestic pigs that have gone wild, with some European wild boars that have escaped from exotic game ranches thrown into the mix and bloodlines. State officials estimate the feral hog population in Texas to be around 2 million and they are estimated to cause around $400 million in damage annually as they eat or root up pastures, crops and even golf courses. That’s $200 per hog… and I’m thinking this is a great stimulus plan as you can easily get that much pork out of a big one. This makes them one of the most costly invasive species in the country… but can also be profitable (unlike snake meat down in the Everglades, which is why I assume the Apocalypse is still continuing as scheduled). The campaign may not please some animal rights groups but Texas farmers don't need much prompting to pull the trigger when it comes to feral hogs (and frankly, they just don’t give a sh*t what those hippies think anyway). Their numbers are growing because they are prolific breeders with few natural predators and are moving into suburban and urban areas. They are also regarded as a challenge to hunt or trap because they are wary and intelligent (slow cooked on a rye bun with my grandpa’s recipe of mesquite barbecue sauce). "Get the Hog Outta Texas" month will feature a challenge among Texas counties that will run until October 31. The county that documents the most hogs removed during the month will get a $25,000 grant toward what the Texas Department of Agriculture terms "feral hog abatement technologies." So let’s go get some bacon!!!

Panda Update - Chinese experts sent to Japan to investigate the death of a giant panda on loan to a zoo have determined that the animal died of asphyxiation, state media reported Saturday. Kou Kou died last month at the Oji zoo in the western port city of Kobe (great beef) after it had received an anesthetic so that veterinarians could extract semen from the 14-year-old male panda to impregnate his partner, Tan Tan. Experts found that Kou Kou had suffocated when "objects in its stomach went into its lungs, leading to asphyxiation," the official Xinhua news agency reported. Earlier, reports suggested the experts believed that the death could have been caused by an overdose of sedatives and were questioning why Japanese veterinarians were extracting semen outside the animal's mating period. A breeding agreement between Beijing and Tokyo includes the stipulation that Japan pay 500,000 dollars in compensation if a panda dies due to human error, state media reported previously. Xinhua said Saturday that China and Japan would settle the matter in accordance with their cooperation agreement on panda research, without providing further details. The panda's death came amid the worst crisis in relations between the two countries in years, stemming from the collision of a Chinese fishing trawler and two Japanese coastguard vessels near disputed islets in the East China Sea. It also comes after Tokyo's Ueno Zoo reached an agreement in July to receive a pair of pandas from China in a deal that will cost nearly one million dollars a year for the next decade. The money is to be spent on protecting wild animals in China. Giant pandas, a highly endangered species native to parts of China, are notoriously slow at reproducing in captivity. There are just 1,600 pandas left in the wild. Nearly 300 others are in captive-breeding programs worldwide, mainly in China, according to official reports. I’ve probably repeated that information dozens of times though… but never before had I reported about a possible… PANDA MURDER!!! (Dun dun duuuuuh…) Sure, the media wants you to believe that it was an accidental drug overdose… while in the act of getting jerked off by a few hot Asian scientists while in a dream state… but are you really going to believe that? There are just too many questions. Who stands to gain from this? Sure, China can try to get a half-million bucks if they find it was due to human error, but Japan’s got a few hostages… and don’t think for a minute that they don’t have ninja guards ready to execute those two pandas if negotiations don’t go their way. Could this lead to international war between the two (and obviously bring us in as Japan’s buddy)? Was this panda’s death REALLY an accident? Could the panda have simply taken a cyanide pill in an effect to bring about the Apocalypse through an alliance with snakes, alligators, tigers & bears? And the most important question of all – Do pandas REALLY need to be sedated to be jerked off? Doesn’t that usually have the opposite effect? Sure, a little sedating can greatly improve the stamina but we’re talking about just getting the gravy in an effective manner. Are pandas such prudes that they won’t even allow themselves to be released by another? So many questions… so few answers.

That’ll wrap it up for today. Sorry to leave you with that image of a panda in a precarious position but… what can I say? I’m a sucker for science. Getting VERY excited for the game this weekend, possible date in the near future & New Orleans at the end of the month… plus plenty of fun stuff in between I’m sure. Gotta make a few more trips out to the lake before it gets too icy to safely traverse. Have a great night everybody!!!

Wave of Killers

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Well, this weekend was pretty weird. It was bright & sunny Saturday morning, then it’s been torrential rain ever since. Not complaining though, because you know how I love the rain. Even went for a little walk in it… before it got too damn cold for that. Great college & pro football yet again. Did anybody else watch the end of the LSU – Tennessee game and think that LSU is probably the sloppiest f**king team ever? But thanks to a little miscommunication, they ended up getting the win. Eagles lost… and surprisingly, even with a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter, Vick getting injured, Kolb sucking so much that I was afraid it would cause a rip in the time-space continuum, some BS calls by the referees (especially that horse hucky at the end of the half with delay of game), some guy named Torain running all over them, and the home crowd booing them at times… they still only lost it when the ball bounced off Jason Avant’s hands on a Hail Mary pass as time expired. Well, hopefully even if the Eagles suck next week when I go to see them at Candlestick Park, at least we’ll hopefully suck less than the winless 49ers. Wouldn’t be too surprised if coach Mike Singletary lined up on defense for those guys. Anyway, it should be fantastic!!! Let’s see, other than watching football this weekend I… well, I cleaned up the apartment, did some laundry, played some basketball Saturday morning, ugh… watched “She’s Out of My League” thanks to Netflix, and ugh… yeah, that’s pretty much it. Oh, I had some crazy dreams too. Wanna hear about them? Tough… cuz here they come…

Friday night – I was at a hotel. Not entirely sure at what capacity, but I was in a suit & looking good as always. I went to this bar area, sat down at the bar, ordered a drink, and started chatting with this sexy woman next to me (See? Obviously it’s a dream at this point). We’re chit chatting about something (dreams are fuzzy like that) and then we took our drinks out onto the balcony and admired the sunset. It was golden & crimson mostly, with the sun glaring off the ocean in shimmering waves, you know the type… the kind that burn their image into your mind forever. There were even some dolphins jumping in the distance amongst the waves. Perfect. Wait a minute, those look too big to be dolphins. Are those… killer whales jumping up out of the water? Sweet!!! This is the greatest sunset EVER!!! Wow, there’s certainly a lot of them jumping now… and they’re getting awfully close to the shore. HOLY CRAP!!! IT’S AN AMBUSH!!! I kid you not, the water rose up to cover the streets and killer whales just kind slid up and started eating people like they were the runt seals of the pack. The whole bottom floor was now underwater, but luckily we were on the 2nd or 3rd floor, so me, the woman, and a few other people from the bar start heading away from the windows and grabbing sharp objects. You know, like axes in case of fires and bar stools. More blunt than sharp in some cases. The water’s rising up the stairwells, with orcas right behind, so we’re moving upwards… and seriously, looking back it was like one of those REALLY bad SyFy movies… you know, like “Sharktopus” and my personal favorite “Dinocroc vs. Supergator” where these killer whales were like popping in windows and trying to snatch up some dinner. REALLY bad if it were a movie… but it was a dream… and honestly, once it’s made into a SyFy TV movie, perhaps it’ll be prophetic… but yeah, I woke up a few minutes into it because… it was pretty ridiculous, right? Anyway, there was another one…

Last night, there were some pretty amazing thunderstorms going on… like rattle the windows and making the bed shake kind of rolling thunder. How do I know this? The roommate asked me if I had heard them this morning. So that part’s legit. Well, during one of these thunder strikes, I woke up lying face first… and I simply couldn’t move. It felt like I was being held down by the covers or something… and then I heard something like… a growling in my ear. I tried to nonchalantly turn myself over and maybe sneak a peek at what was doing this… but it was no use. So then… I really started to struggle… and it felt like my arms were asleep to begin with… but eventually I whip around and there’s really nothing there, except this darkness that didn’t really form any shape… just kind like the shadow of a cloud or something… and basically with all my struggling and whipping around and swinging at things that aren’t there, my bed is trashed. Sheets, blankets, feather comforters, all thrown about the room. I’m up on the bed, poised in crouching position like I’m a f**king cobra ready to strike… and nothing’s there. By the way, I apparently dozed off back to bed after that… and when I woke up, I was snug as a bug in a rug in my bed… and my room was in perfect order. So my flip-out where I went Jackie Chan on my bedroom didn’t happen. So yeah, I’m basically losing my mind yet again… good times. Anyway, happy birthdays out to K-Fish (even though she’s been giving me the silent treatment for a few months now) and my cousin Ranae back in Denver over the weekend. Hope y’all had a fun time!!! Miss y’all madly. Here’s some news…

Chippendales – Now, I haven’t thought about my days as a Chippendale’s dancer in years… especially since my 26th birthday party in Vegas. Alisa & Filly know what I’m talking about. Anyway, this little story brought back memories. The male erotic dancer company Chippendales stumbled on Friday when an appeals court ruled that it could not trademark the bow tie and shirt cuffs that the men wear. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said in a ruling -- which included a sketch of a fit gentleman shown from the waist up wearing only a bow tie and shirt cuffs -- that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was correct in refusing to trademark the "Cuffs and Collar" costume. New York-based Chippendales, which filed the original trademark application in 2000, failed to prove that the bow tie and cuffs costume was distinctive, the court said. The court noted that the Chippendales' expert witness acknowledged that the outfit was "inspired" by the Playboy bunny suit, thus stripping the Chippendales' Cuffs & Collar of the distinctiveness needed to get a trademark (yeesh!). The Playboy bunny suit was trademarked in 1964 and expired in 2004, the court said. That costume is shirt cuffs, corset, tie, bunny ears and bunny tail. Hmm… I think I know what my Halloween costume is going to be when I go to New Orleans in a few weeks. Now that I don’t have to worry about trademark infringement… and I’ve got the bowtie and cufflinks… then again, it may not be the best weather for an outfit like that. We shall see. Tough break, guys.

Brazilians Elect Clown as Congressman - Voters the world over complain about having clowns for politicians, but Brazilians embraced the idea on Sunday by sending a real one to Congress with more votes than any other candidate. Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva, better known by his clown name Tiririca, received more than 1.3 million votes in Sao Paulo state in Brazil's presidential and congressional elections. That was more than double the votes of the second-placed candidate in Brazil's most populous state. I'm NOT joking. This guy, pictured here, is a Brazilian congressman. Tiririca caught the attention of disillusioned voters by asking for their support with the humorous slogan: "It can't get any worse" and a promise to do nothing more in Congress than report back to them on how politicians spend their time. "What does a congressman do? The truth is I don't know, but vote for me and I'll tell you," the 45-year-old said in his campaign advertisements. The clown, whose stage name means "grumpy," usually appears in public wearing a blond wig, a red hat and a garish outfit. He survived a last-minute attempt by public prosecutors to bar him from running because of evidence that he is illiterate (See? My political career isn’t completely ruined because I can’t read no good). His candidacy may not have been as spontaneous or innocent as it might appear. Tiririca's well-financed campaign will help elect other politicians because under Brazil's election rules he can pass his substantial excess votes on to other candidates in his coalition, which includes the ruling Workers' Party. Nice, right? So just to recap, a well-meaning hip hop legend can’t even get on the ballet in a fubar’d country like Haiti… but a Brazilian Bozo the Clown can not only get elected in a landslide by the most populous city in South America… but use those extra votes to help everybody in his extra small car get elected too. I love political loopholes. They’re absolutely amazing and frightening at the same time. I really need to get into politics. It would be quite the adventure… and I would like to think that I could do some good… but at the very least, I’ll make a few people laugh hysterically when my memoirs come out. Can’t wait to read this guy’s memoirs when he… oh yeah, he’s illiterate. Oh well.

On that note, now that you know more about me than you care to… I’ll leave you be. Great Monday Night Football going on tonight… and I get to enjoy the rain for the next few days too. Have a great night everybody!!!

Snow in the Land of Oz

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Nothing really planned this weekend… except an easy breezy plan for a date in Reno with Candy… but we’ll see. Was thinking about finally doing some good hiking but… apparently there’s supposed to be thunderstorms so… we’ll see. You know how I love the rain though, so combine that with some possible romance, it could make for a fantastic weekend. Eagles – Racists game in Philly on Sunday with plenty of great college & professional football… so I’m a little excited… and it’s a great warmup for next week when I go to the Eagles – 49ers game at Candlestick Park. Oh… and less than four weeks until New Orleans. Exciting times indeed.

Oscar-nominated actor Tony Curtis died Wednesday evening of cardiac arrest at home in the Las Vegas-area city of Henderson, Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy said Thursday. He was 85. He shaped himself from a 1950s movie heartthrob into a respected actor, showing a determined streak that served him well in such films as "Sweet Smell of Success," "The Defiant Ones" and "Some Like It Hot." "He died peacefully here, surrounded by those who love him and have been caring for him," his wife, Jill Curtis, told The Associated Press outside their home. "All Tony ever wanted to be was a movie star. He didn't want to be the most dramatic actor. He wanted to be a movie star, ever since he was a little kid." Curtis began acting in frivolous movies that exploited his handsome physique and appealing personality then steadily moved to more substantial roles, starting in 1957 in the harrowing show business tale, "Sweet Smell of Success." In 1958, "The Defiant Ones" brought him an Academy Award nomination as best actor for his portrayal of a white racist who escaped from prison handcuffed to a black man played by Sidney Poitier. The following year, Curtis donned women's clothing and sparred with Marilyn Monroe in one of the most acclaimed film comedies ever, Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot." (Check it out if you haven’t) "He was a fine actor ... I shall miss him," said British actor Roger Moore, who starred alongside Curtis in TV's "The Persuaders." "He was great fun to work with, a great sense of humor and wonderful ad libs," Moore told Sky News. "We had the best of times." Curtis' first wife was actress Janet Leigh of "Psycho" fame; actress Jamie Lee Curtis is their daughter. "My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages," Jamie Lee Curtis said in a statement. "He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world." Truly a sad day.

Greg Giraldo, a comedian famous for his stinging insult humor, disgruntled rants and frequent appearances on Comedy Central’s highly watched roast series, also died on Wednesday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. He was 44. He had been hospitalized since Saturday night after he was found unconscious in a hotel room in New Brunswick, where he was scheduled to perform at a club. Mr. Giraldo had suffered a drug overdose (comedian’s kryptonite), The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick, N.J., reported, citing New Brunswick police. The precise cause of death on Wednesday was unclear. A hospital spokesman said the family declined to release that information. The thing I liked most about Greg Giraldo was that he was a lawyer who gave up a job at a law firm to pursue comedy, probably because he got more chicks and free drugs that way. That’d be my guess. Mr. Giraldo became a wildly successful stand-up comic touring the country as a headliner at many clubs and dispensing his own brand of sharp and often brutal humor. As Mr. Giraldo’s following grew so did his presence on radio and television. He performed more than a dozen times on Leno & Conan and become a radio regular on “The Howard Stern Show.” Mr. Giraldo was particularly known for his clever and exasperated rants, which he used to great effect on Comedy Central shows like “Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn” and Lewis Black’s “Root of All Evil.” But it was his regular appearances on that network’s roast series — one of Comedy Central’s most successful shows — that drew particular attention. Mr. Giraldo was a mainstay on that series, taking the stage in more than a half-dozen shows to mercilessly ridicule pop-culture figures like Pamela Anderson, William Shatner, & Chevy Chase. “I could only dream,” he told Mr. Chase, of making “three good movies” and 40 horrible ones — and, in 2009, a fellow comedian, Larry the Cable Guy. Mr. Giraldo was born in New York in 1965. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia and a law degree from Harvard. He was divorced with three children. He will be missed.

Snow White Remake – Enough talk about death, let’s talk about rebirth. "Snow White and the Huntsman", a re-telling of the classic fairy tale, has been making the rounds of the studios reports Heat Vision. Oh… and for those of you who don’t know, a “re-telling” of a classic fairy tale… is basically just taking characters from an established brand and doing whatever you want with them. Scribe Evan Daugherty, director Rupert Sanders and producer Joe Roth are all attached to this version which expands the role of the Huntsman in the fairy tale. Ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her, he instead lets her go and becomes something of a mentor who teaches her how to fight and survive. Oh yeah… you read that correctly. The two are also apparently chained together for part of the movie as they make their escape, but this isn't a romantic connection as the prince will still serve as the love interest. Really? There's a wrinkle however in the form of two rival projects. Disney Pictures is developing its own revisiting of the story entitled "Snow and the Seven" which is set in British colonial China and will be directed by Francis Lawrence. Relativity is also developing its own edgy take which Brett Ratner will produce and Melisa Wallack ("Meet Bill") has penned. I repeat for the cheap seats… Disney… is making a movie called “Snow and the Seven”… set in colonial China… because as we all know, Chinese people are dwarves. Hey, I’m not making the movie. Why the hell else would it be set in China? Maybe it should be set in Japan and called “Whiteness of Snow & the Seven Samurai” or set in the Wild West and called “Snowy & the Magnificent Seven” or perhaps a crossover with a detective movie set in New York entitled “Snow Se7en”. “WHAT’S IN THE BOX???” Oh yes, my ideas are MUCH worse, right? Oh… they get worse…

Oz Remakes – It’s not just Disney classics that are in peril of being violated cinematically. The wonderful land of Oz is getting the business too… and this may involve more violation than the HBO series of the same name. "Glee" star Lea Michele is set to both voice the titular character and sing several musical numbers in the animated 3D musical "Dorothy of Oz" for Summertime Entertainment reports Variety. Randi Barnes, Adam Balsam and Barry Glasser penned the script based on the same book by Roger S. Baum, great-grandson of the original "The Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum. This story centers on Dorothy Gale "returning to a tornado-devastated Kansas and then being transported back to Oz to help her friends." Also onboard are Jim Belushi as the Lion, Dan Aykroyd as the Scarecrow, Kelsey Grammer as the Tin Man, Oliver Platt as Wiser the Owl, Megan Hilty as the China Princess, Hugh Dancy as Marshall Mallow and Martin Short as Dorothy's arch-nemesis Jester. Bryan Adams and his writing partner Jim Vallance are writing the first songs and lyrics for the film. Bonne Radford ("Curious George," "The Road to El Dorado") is producing while Dan St. Pierre ("Everyone’s Hero") is directing. Okay, a 3D animated sequel starring a lot of elderly comedians and the chick from Glee? I can see that being made. Probably won’t be any good but… it’s good that Dan Aykroyd and the other Belushi can get some work still. What’s that? There’s more?

Yet More Oz Remakes - "Spider-Man" & “Evil Dead” director Sam Raimi has apparently been offered the job of director on Disney's upcoming prequel "Oz: The Great and Powerful" reports New York Magazine. Though the likes of Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") and Adam Shankman ("Hairspray") were previously rumored, the paper's sources claim Raimi has already received an official offer. Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man” & “Sherlock Holmes”) will star in the film which tells of how the Wizard arrived in Oz and became the ruler of the Emerald City (not Seattle). Mitchell Kapner penned the script. The project is one of AT LEAST A HALF DOZEN PROJECTS based on L. Frank Baum's classic literary property currently in the works, most being original spins on the property rather than direct adaptations. The list includes the 'Wizard' sequel “Surrender Dorothy" which Zach Helm ("Stranger Than Fiction") penned and Drew Barrymore is rumored to be directing; the previously mentioned animated musical "Dorothy of Oz"; the film adaptation of the hit musical "Wicked"; a project simply called "Oz" by Darren Lemke ("Shrek Forever After") but is NOT the HBO series; a darker and twisted take on the Oz books by scribe Josh Olson ("A History of Violence") and Todd MacFarlane (“Spawn”); and yet another CG-animated feature that John Boorman is slated to direct. The sad thing is… of all of those, I’m only mildly interested in seeing Robert Downey jr as the Wizard and the twisted sh*t that Todd McFarlane will do with the story. I watched the “Tin Man” TV movie thing a few years back with Zooey Deschanel (“500 Days of Summer”) as Dorothy and honestly, it’s going to be REALLY hard to top that hotness on a Dorothy… and it wasn’t even intentional. Oh… and the story was a little blah. Anyway, best of luck to all of you in your ventures to capitalize on the nostalgic childhood market. Which reminds me, I should really get to writing my children’s books…

Star Whores – Speaking of recycled classics for a profit, once again George Lucas is re-re-re-releasing the original Star Wars Saga (GASP!!!). Creator George Lucas is reportedly set on re-releasing all six films in the "Star Wars" franchise with new 3D conversions in 2012 according to the trades. Fox will release the 3D versions starting early 2012 with "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (JAR JAR IN 3D!!! FINALLY!!!). Each subsequent film will be released annually around the same date over consecutive years (so as to allow for capitalizing on both the summer release in theatres AND Christmas DVD purchases over the rest of the decade for doing NOTHING). Lucasfilm is taking at least a full year with each conversion and will use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project. The reason for the 2012 release of the first film is that Lucas is waiting for enough 3D screens being available to create a 'huge event'. Lucas purportedly is lining up the re-releases as a lead-in to the ultimate home-viewing experience as home 3D TV technology is being perfected in coming years. Oh… and please don’t worry, this won't affect Lucas' plans for a comprehensive 2D Blu-ray Disc set of the six films due out next year… so you won’t have to wait for yet another format to own the entire story in… in addition to your VHS, laserdisc, DVD, Betamax, LP, 8-track, whatever else is out there (I still just have the first three on VHS & my pirated Episode III from China which I bought the day it hit theatres, but please don’t tell anybody… cuz I’ve got a nerdy reputation to keep). Sigh… why doesn’t anybody remake “Spaceballs” in 3D? Or how about this… “Back to the Future” in 3D? Oh yeah… I know I just made you cream a little bit when you read that. Don’t fight it, just go with it. It’s okay. Anyway, now you know why George Lucas is LOOOOOOADEEEEED!!! Just remember, you can’t take it with you…

Long Lost Chicken Scratch - Archaeologists say scrawl on the back of a letter recovered from a 17th century dig site reveals a previously unknown language spoken by indigenous peoples in northern Peru. A team of international archaeologists found the letter under a pile of adobe bricks in a collapsed church complex near Trujillo, 347 miles north of Lima. The complex had been inhabited by Dominican friars for two centuries. "Our investigations determined that this piece of paper records a number system in a language that has been lost for hundreds of years," Jeffrey Quilter, an archaeologist at Harvard's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, told Reuters. A photograph of the letter recently released by archaeologists shows a column of numbers written in Spanish and translated into a language that scholars say is now extinct. "We discovered a language no one has seen or heard since the 16th or 17th century," Quilter said, adding that the language appears to have been influenced by Quechua, an ancient tongue still spoken by millions of people across the Andes. He said it could also be the written version of a language colonial-era Spaniards referred to in historical writings as pescadora, for the fishermen on Peru's northern coast who spoke it. So far no record of the pescadora language has been found. The letter, buried in the ruins of the Magdalena de Cao Viejo church at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex in northern Peru, was discovered in 2008. But Quilter said archaeologists decided to keep their discovery secret until the research showing evidence of the lost language was published this month in the journal American Anthropologist. "I think a lot of people don't realize how many languages were spoken in pre-contact times," Quilter said. "Linguistically, the relationship between the Spanish conquistadors and the indigenous was very complex."

True, language and how people communicate is an amazing, complex & fascinating thing. However, I often wonder… how will society look back on us in… even just a few hundred years? First off, most of our crap wouldn’t last long. It’s not like… three hundred years from now, somebody’s going to dig up your DVD collection and theorize that it’s some kind of flying disc that you used to hunt cattle & the now-extinct pussycat dolls. Will my blog survive so that future generations can marvel at my amazing wit & perception of life… not unlike the Henry David Thoreau or Mark Twain? Will I be required reading for children in school? Or I guess by the time will I be required “mental downloading” for humanoids? What if these “plates” and “pots” that we dig up at sites were really an ancient societies version of a music record… but we just don’t have their player? Yes, I’m sure these are all questions that you’ve reckoned over a fresh bag of sticky icky icky (oooEEEE!!!) but you know, I often wonder what the legacy of our planet will be. Hell, then again, maybe scientists are right and they’ll be digging up the whole planet once we destroy it and are living on Mars or something… if we make it that far. What will truly live on is how we treat each other and the planet where we live? Not what we say in some ancient tongue that nobody knows anymore. Anyway, that’s my message for the day. Have a great weekend everybody!!! Wish me luck… and maybe a little lust…

Where Should I Go Next?
