Chinatown to Chinatown

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Pretty standard week thus far… Dizzy’s aunt has a retirement party this weekend… but aside from that, just getting excited for our trip to Utah next week. Free agency has been crazy in the NBA. The Warriors somehow convinced the Jazz to take on some dead weight contracts so they could get Andre Iguodala, which makes them a BEAST if they stay healthy. Aside from them & the Brooklyn Nets, everybody else seems to either be content with what they have or bailing on this year in hopes that they can get a good draft pick and/or free agents next summer. Management can’t really say it… but basically about three-quarters of the NBA seems to mark this year up as a loss, presuming that the Heat will dominate or something & they’re gearing for the next few years. Is it wrong? To tank in the present so that you can compete for the next few years (allegedly)? Eh… whatever, they’ll get their money because people will still pay… and that’s what really matters, right?

NBA 2K13 Update: No tanking for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013-2014 season in my virtual reality. We swept through the Celtics & 76ers. Now facing the Heat in the conference finals, then probably (barring the computer doing what it likes to do & making my team do random stupid things & the other team do amazing impossible things) the winner of the Lakers & Suns (GASP!!!) in the NBA Finals. My money’s on the Lakers since… well, they like to match me up directly against the best small forwards & two-guards like Paul Pierce, LeBron James, Kevin Durant & Kobe Bryant on a regular basis. I’m quickly becoming a defensive powerhouse to match my marksmanship on the offensive end now that I’ve figured out part of their ridiculous system. Oh… and I just turned 21 on the game so… I may be a hot commodity on the free agent market soon.

Monday night, the new roommate… we’ll call her Temp (since she won’t be around long) watched the Roman Polanski-directed film “Chinatown” starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway & John Huston. This is a classic film noir movie in the same vein as the Bogart pictures from back in the day… you know, private detective, dame in distress, lies, double crosses, murder, corruption, all that jazz. The story basically starts when a private investigator (Nicholson) is hired to catch a cheating husband… only he later finds out that it wasn’t the real wife (Dunaway) that hired him… it was somebody else… and now to save his reputation & business… and maybe his pride, he wants to get to the bottom of why he was played a fool. Also, the husband that he was found dead after drowning during a major drought… so now, he’s caught in a tangled web of corruption, power, money, wealthy family drama, and all that other stuff. The movie was shot splendidly to match the feel of 1940’s Los Angeles even though it was made in the early 70’s… and appropriate storytelling for the genre. I’ve only seen a few Polanski flicks (“The Ninth Gate” & “Carnage” recently) but he seems to thrive on keeping the audience in a state of confusion & unsettlement so that they better personify with the main characters… even when the characters have less than desirable traits. It’s a great system & it seems to work for him… now if he could just stop diddling teenagers he might be considered among the elite filmmakers… but hey, we all have our vices I guess. The flick is great. I’d say check it out. It’s on Netflix. You’re welcome. Here’s the news…

SF to LA in half an hour? – That’s right… there coming up with a way to go from Chinatown to Chinatown more rapidly. Commuting is a way of life for most Bay Area residents. Many people traveling from the East Bay to downtown are accustomed to an hour commute each way without traffic. Some people even commute to Southern California several times a month, spending several hours each way either in the car or fighting through airports. What if there was an alternative to flights and car rides? If it was up to Tesla CEO Elon Musk and a Colorado company, an answer could come sooner than we think. That answer is called… the Hyperloop System Musk, the man behind both Tesla Motors and SpaceX, has spoken about a high-speed transportation system known as the Hyperloop, a tube transport system that would allow passengers to travel at high speeds. The proposed system could reduce trips between San Francisco and Los Angeles to minutes, and reaching the East Coast from California could take under an hour. Okay, calm down, let’s hear it out. Crazy as it seems, the company ET3, based out of Longmont, Colorado, has already been hard at work making this a reality, calling their project the Evacuated Tube Transport. Yes… I’m thinking about Futurama too… it’s perfectly natural… but still, let’s hear it out.

How Does It Work? The Hyperloop has been vaguely described by Musk as a "cross between a Concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table." Well f**k, I’m sold!!! A better description might be an elevated tube system with a magnetic levitation system similar to high-speed bullet trains. The kicker would be the enclosed tube, which would provide a nearly friction-less surface for individual capsules to travel in. ET3's Hyperloop-like project already has a number of schematics and plans already in place. They claim an automobile-sized, six-passenger capsule constructed for "outer space" travel conditions could easily reach speeds of 4,000 miles per hour on longer journeys across the country or across continents. In theory, this elevated tube system could be built for a tenth of the cost of high-speed rail and a quarter the cost of a freeway (numbers which I’m sure will change once reality sets in). The projected cost for a passenger to travel from Los Angeles to New York is $100. (WHAT??? ON A BUS??? What do you base those numbers on? I want that deal. It says $299 on Greyhound’s as I type this) The tubes could be connected to form a new superhighway across the United States. They could go underwater and connect to Alaska, Hawaii, and the rest of the world… and then the moon. Oh, NOW you think I’m crazy? Anybody remember the proposed “elevator to space”? ET3 has already built mock-ups and prototypes and is planning a 3-mile test run by the end of 2013.

Expanding on Older Ideas - Despite the ingenuity of the idea, it isn't actually that new. In 1972, a paper written by physicist R.M Salter described a tube system known as the Very High Speed Transit System (VHST) that could send people across the United States in under an hour. The system was composed of a series of underground tubes arranged in a network across the country. While several technical problems existed with the idea at the time (no sh*t), Salter also concluded, "The general principles are fairly straightforward: electromagnetically levitated and propelled cars in an evacuated tunnel." The one primary difference between Salter's plan and ET3's is that the VHST would need to be underground, with massive amounts of excavation required. If the Hyperloop or Evacuated Tube Transport was built and succeeded, it could make California's current high-speed rail project obsolete. With a budgeted cost of $70 billion, the high-speed system currently under development would take passengers from San Francisco to L.A. in three hours, potentially six times slower than the Hyperloop. So what do you think? Bullet train going 150 MPH or riding one of those bank tubes at roughly five times the speed of sound? No coin rolls please. Yes, in theory, it’s a great idea… and I look forward to the results of their tests… but yeah, it’s up there with Hoverboards, Teleporters, Dilithium crystal-powered warp drives, Metachlorians, Hypersleep chambers, Unobtainium, Flying Cars, Death Rays, Death Stars, Weather Dominators, Unicorns, Pegasuses (Pegasi?), Dragons, and just about everything else that’s in “test phase” as it’s been for many, many, many years. Still, it’s an awesome concept… good luck, Mr. Musk!

Batman Update – Batman is more than a man… he’s a symbol… a myth… a legend with which some can use for good… or evil. Unfortunately, some young whippersnapper has briefly taken the symbol for evil. A 16-year-old boy wearing a Batman shirt and mask broke into a building at the Colorado State Fair… then turned himself in to police after seeing his likeness on the news. The Pueblo Chieftain reported that the boy is one of three accused of breaking into the Fair's VIP building early Thursday. The trio took televisions, a laptop and an empty cash register (Wah wah…). The suspects managed to lock themselves in the building and had to break out. KRDO-TV aired surveillance video of the suspect dressed as Batman. After the video aired, the boy turned himself in to police.  Authorities plan to seek charges including burglary and criminal mischief. The boy wasn't named because of his age (doubting it was Bruce Wayne… but wouldn’t that be funny). Spoiler alert: Police were still seeking the other two suspects… who unfortunately weren’t dressed as Superman and the Flash as part of Pueblo’s bizarroworld Injustice League (patent pending). By the way, this story just made me think of my dream from a few years back… and I’m thinking that I may have to see about turning that into a little bit of a comic (so that DC can sue me down the road for using their characters & get their cut, which I’m okay with… after expenses). I’ll keep you posted on that one… and now we need a story of a Batman saving people. I wonder if he was involved in that plane crash at SFO this weekend… the world may never know.

Why Soccer Sucks #523 – Now, I consider myself a fairly passionate sports fan. You may also agree that soccer fans are among the more passionate sports fans in general as well. Yes, I said soccer, so it’s not mistaken for REAL football. Obviously there are players in the NFL that… are basically horrible human beings. Just watch any episode of Sportscenter over the past 15 years or so… and I’m guessing there’s at least one reference to yet another player assaulting, murdering, stealing from, running over or shooting at somebody else (or themselves if your name is Plaxico). However, the game itself is typically not life or death (that comes afterwards with the head injuries) like it is with soccer. The latest tale: One man has been arrested in northern Brazil after a referee who fatally stabbed an amateur player over his refusal to leave the field was decapitated by a mob, police said on Saturday. I didn’t make that up. Referee… STABBED a player. Why? Because he wouldn’t leave the field. Repercussion for the referee? Trial? Discipline? Nope. Decapitation! Basically it's the equivalent of the "Fail Mary" referee then stabbing Golden Tate... and the Seahawks crowd ripping him to shreds. Instead, I think they met up earlier this week to "hug it out" or something. Twenty-year old referee Octavio da Silva stabbed the thirty-year old player Josenir dos Santos on June 30th after dos Santos refused to heed his order to leave, police spokesman Kena Souza told Reuters. A mob then turned on da Silva, killing him before severing his head in the remote town of Pio XII, named after a former pope (pope during WWII). A 27-year-old man was arrested on July 2 and police in the regional headquarters of Santa Ines will continue to investigate the incident, Souza said. Brazil has made significant strides in lowering homicide rates in recent years, as millions were lifted from poverty (and placed in poverty adjacent further away from the town center), but it faces mounting pressures to show it is a safe place for tourists before 12 Brazilian cities host the 2014 soccer World Cup and Rio de Janeiro the Olympic Games in 2016. In Rio de Janeiro on the day of the brawl, Brazil's national team handily defeated Spain in the Confederations Cup, considered a test run for next year's much bigger championship. The eight-team tournament was marked by an unexpected wave of demonstrations, some violent, in part to protest the $14 billion being spent on World Cup preparations amid a lack of adequate public services. So yeah… Brazil isn’t prospering as a nation… but hey, they’ve got the World Cup & Olympics coming. Look at what that did for Athens in 2004!!! Anyway, angry dads at little league games don’t seem so bad now, do they?

Apocalypse Update – My God! This may be the most frightening update yet… the evil reptile would-be overlords have become aware… and our using our own infrastructure against us. A French post office employee had the fright of her life when a meter-long (3.3-foot) python slithered quietly out of a parcel and rubbed against her. The woman was alone in the post office in the village of Blenod-les-Pont-a-Mousson (which I believe means “Village of the Mouse Pants” in French… Lilie?) in eastern France on Friday evening when she felt the chilling caress and screamed for help. Firemen caught the fugitive reptile and discovered a second one in the parcel. The pair were identified by a vet as ball pythons - non-aggressive snakes that coil up into a tight ball when threatened - and donated to a nearby zoo. "They're not dangerous but they're very impressive," an officer said. Ball pythons are popular with snake enthusiasts as pets but are also a protected species for which owners need a legal certificate stating they have not been taken from the wild. Customs officers raided the home address, in France, of the parcel's sender, where they found no certificates but two other snakes, a stuffed caiman and a stuffed turtle which the owner had been trying to sell over the Internet. The post office stressed that its terms and conditions clearly forbade the shipping of animals, live or dead… and I’m sure the offenders were given a stern talking-to as opposed to a fine or felony or something. What does this mean? Certainly these miniature ball pythons were test subjects… like sending monkeys into space first… test the waters to see if their heads would explode before the mass transportation of weaponized viper squads throughout the world. They may have to reconsider their strategy after being caught… but perhaps that’s just a few “biohazard” stickers away. They’re cunning… they’ve been around since the dinosaurs… they’ve already survived a few apocalypses that they may or may not have had a hand in… so they’ll do what it takes. We just have to be ready. Be careful out there opening your packages. Always have a machete ready. Besides… it helps with opening the package sometimes too.

Anyway, that’ll do it for today. We’ve discussed basketball, movies by pedophile directors, bullet trains to hell (LA), Batman going bad, deadly soccer mobs & slither bombs. Kind of a busy day for most blogs… but not for us… and just think, it was a slow past few days. Have a great day everybody!!!

A Dangerous M-E-T-H-O-D Maaan

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Just thought I’d say howdy before I’m preoccupied the next week or so with Jackie D coming to visit. It’s gonna be EPIC!!! Like Vegas… but in San Francisco. Too bad C-Real can’t be here to share… but she got her visit about a year ago. I can’t believe I haven’t seen Jackie D since Vegas nearly 18 months ago. WTF? How are we still buddies like this? We were roommates over two years ago… for like six weeks… then she left for Philly… then we met up for a week in Vegas… and that’s it. Yeah, we text & whatever… but it’s like we’re friends from back in the day or something. Weird, right? Anyway, this week is gonna rock… but here’s the last week first… with a few movie reviews…

First movie up was one I forgot to mention last time, “A Dangerous Method” starring Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortenson & Keira Knightley. This movie is from the director of some of Viggo’s best other work including “History of Violence” & “Eastern Promises” but is a tale about the birth of psychoanalysis, the two men who headed its introduction into modern curriculum Carl Jung (Fassbender) & Sigmund Freud (Mortensen), and a Russian patient (Knightley) who influenced both of their findings. Set in early 20th century Vienna (God, I have to go visit that place) and going over the span of many years, it deals with how these two incredibly intelligent men had very differing principles in the idea of psychoanalysis & how these idea (and men) often conflicted in a scientific sense… and Keira Knightley goes from bat sh*t crazy to another key cog in the process… and bangs Carl Jung… a lot… despite being married to a wealthy women with children. Yeah, it’s not a great romantic comedy or anything… but hey, most real history isn’t. The movie was very interesting… albeit not totally enthralling at times. Keira Knightley actually acts a bit… which you know, doesn’t usually have to happen in her movie choices. The two lead actors also do decent jobs but… yeah, not my real cup of tea. Intriguing though. Feel free to give it a gander. Check out the preview & you’ll pretty much know what you’re getting into. Decide from there.

Next up was “War Horse” starring a horse… and the only other actors I really recognized were Tom Hiddleston (Loki from “Thor”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (aka Khan from new Star Trek), both very briefly. Steven Spielberg directs this movie about a teenage English boy & his horse… and then the World War breaks out & the father gives the army the horse… the boy is distraught… and then the rest of the movie is pretty much about the horse & how it goes from owner to owner… from an English general… to the Germans… to a French farm… back to the English infantry… and so on for about two hours. Now, Dizzy & I wanted to watch this movie. She because she LOVES horses… and I because I typically enjoy Spielberg movies, especially war ones like “Saving Private Ryan.” The thing about this movie is… from the horse lover perspective (and historical) there are MANY, MANY flaws. That being said, I can forgive a lot of those. I mean… Django. For me, the main problem was… they basically tried to tell a movie that, for all intensive purposes, was a kids film about the eternal love of a boy & his horse and how (spoiler alert) they come back together against all odds as long as they never gave up on one another. Fun fact: Both of them had given up on one another… because one was a horse… and the other was a teenager who then enlisted into the army… and even in this movie they coincidentally got back together in a pretty unrealistic way. Anyway, kids movie on that premise… but set in the gritty environment of wartime… including sets of trench warfare & ambush fighting. For all intensive purposes, it was a beautifully shot movie & well crafted for what it was… but maybe I just couldn’t let everything go with regards to the unrealistic premise when it was so based in reality. Call me a heartless fool if you will… but yeah, I didn’t particularly care for this movie. Sorry Steven. You know I’d prefer to show love to fellow $teve’s.

Saturday, Dizzy & went to San Jose to attend the BIG WOW Comic Convention… however, when we got to town & saw the convention center, there was a line around the block just to get in & it was already around 1 PM when we got there. Poor planning on our part maybe… but since we were in town, we decided to check out the Technology Museum just a few blocks away… and it was pretty awesome. They have some great exhibits regarding the development of computers, the science behind them, different methods of harnessing energy & how it all works, space exploration, underwater exploration, inventors, genetics, robotics& all sorts of other things. It’s definitely set up more as a children’s museum obviously but still very interesting for adults as well. Here are some pictures from the museum and downtown area…

While at the museum, we decided to watch “Star Trek Into Darkness” in IMAX (Dizzy didn’t see it on Wednesday like I did). That night after some dinner, we drove back to Dizzy’s and watched “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan” since I had never seen it. I know… shocking!!! I’ve seen enough clips & parodies to feel like I had seen it… but yeah, I haven’t seen a LOT of Star Trek shows in my life. The movie itself was pretty entertaining… Ricardo Montelban was a pretty decent villain as he usually is (“Naked Gun”) and while watching… I totally realized a lot more of the tie-ins with new one “Star Trek Into Darkness” including Kirk’s love interest Carole Marcus (who is played in the new one by Alice Eve) so I guess I now know where those little glances are leading to… and it’s apparently a blonde curly haired son a foot taller than either his father or mother if “Wrath of Khan” is any indication. Oh… and you haven’t seen “Wrath of Khan” yet then you probably never intended to… but it’s pretty good as far as Star Trek movies go. Go ahead and check it out… if not just for the lines you’ve already heard like “Revenge is a dish best served cold” or “From Hell’s heart I stab at thee” or the legendary “KHHAAAAAAAN!!!”

Monday after work, I spent the night cleaning & fixing my bathroom sink… it was just clogged, but I didn’t want to break anything… and drain-o and such didn’t work at first, so then I had to get some gloves so as not to burn my skin (according to the bottle). That night was pretty lame… but Tuesday night was a little soirĂ©e with my coworkers to wish my boss a fond farewell as he moves to the Los Angeles office. The party was held in a manager’s home in Pacific Heights and… she must be making a lot more than I do. It was VERY nice… and she did a wonderful spread & was an excellent host. Throughout the evening we just chatted about this & that, how “Caddyshack” may be overrated as a movie but it’s basically the male equivalent of “Dirty Dancing” to the ladies, ex-boyfriend stories, ex-coworker stories, favorite places to eat, tips for my boss going to LA to find decent food, and as the wine flowed we all got more & more hilarious. A great time was had by all. Definitely one of the best parties that I’ve had with my coworkers even though it was basically just us sitting & drinking. I’m actually gonna miss the Boss Man… especially since the rumor is that the new Boss Man might be my old Boss man from Tahoe… but that’s just a rumor, so we’ll see.

So yeah… Saturday morning is when Jackie D flies into town on her magic carpet & we’ve already got plans for brunch at the Magic Flute & a nice trip out to Wine Country… and then she’ll have plenty of time to check out the city again or hang with Dizzy while I’m at work… but a great FOUR DAY WEEKEND is coming up so I’m really excited about that. Have a great weekend everybody!!!

Yes... Post Number 999

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Yes, it's no joke... been doing this a few years... and this is post number 999 aka the Hanging Upside-Down Sign of the Devil that you see in really bad movies. The Devil in the mirror... and most importantly, the one before the end of the first THOUSAND entries. Yes, if these were compiled into books... I'd probably be somewhere on volume 8 or 9 of my memoirs. Okay, so most of the stuff is about movies, sports, news clips & the like rather than my personal gibberish... but still... it'd make for a great conversation collection on your reading nook. Conversations around the world would start amongst friends with "You read this sh*t?" "Of course I do... and I'm raising his child." Alas, here is the updated from the last week...

Last weekend, Dizzy & I went to a Chilean Independence Party at her friend's apartment in the Inner Sunset. Good times were had... and we drank beer, pisco sours (some type of South American brandy mixed with egg whites & sugar) and they (Dizzy mostly) made homemade empanadas. Here are some pictures...

The work week was... more of the same. A lot of work... apparently enough pay for it... and then the afternoons I caught up on Daily Show & Colbert Report. It's my news. Deal with it. It's not the only news I watch... but it's the only news I enjoy to watch... because there's nothing like facts with a dose of hilarious reality.

Saturday, Dizzy & I went to the Superhero Street Fair in the Mission / Portero Hill / Industrial Park area near Cesar Chavez & Indiana. It was pretty cool. People were dressed up, there were vendors selling artistic goods (we may have a booth at these kind of events soon), dance beats were being belted out by overweight white guys in costumes, 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Ale was pretty delicious, there were exhibits of reclaimed art (made from trash), human hamster ball races, good times. Here are pictures... of us... dressed as Special Agents Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, FBI...

Afterwards, we headed to Chinatown for the Moon Festival for more crafts, a sh*t ton more people, and basically we had lunch at the dim sum buffet (chicken claws included this time, not impressed at all) and I don't even have any pictures. You may want to check Dizzy's blog for those.

Saturday night, we watched a marathon of "Prophets of Science Fiction" on the Science Channel including H.G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein & Philip K. Dick. Sh*t was amazing... I highly recommend it. Basically the shows are about how these sci-fi writers "predicted" technology & it's effect on people... which in all reality was basically showing that they studied human nature & could make deductive reasoning... but still, very interesting. Go check them out. George Lucas and a few others are on the queue but haven't gotten to them yet.

Today, I watched football... and had I thought about it, I might be doing a live blog thing about it like I did last year... but hey, maybe next week... if you're lucky... cuz I'm kinda hilarious. So yeah... next entry will be 1000. Fun fact, here are the numbers of posts per year since I started this thing... and you tell me if there's a pattern in my free time...

2007 - 195 (started in May)
2008 - 309
2009 - 206
2010 - 176
2011 - 75
2012 - 38 (this is number 38, in late September)

Have a great day everybody!!! TECHNOCRACY!!!

Le Krewe de Love

Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

Well, tomorrow I'll be in New Orleans…so you won't be hearing from me for a few days. I know, I know. It sucks…but you'll survive…and if not, then just gimme a call. No matter how loud the parade is, how drunk I am, or how many breasts are flaunted in my face, I'll do my best to answer the call…but please keep in mind…that it'll be really loud…and I'll probably be really drunk…and I anticipate a LOT of breasts being flaunted in my face. There should be some great pictures (and video?) so dry your eyes, it'll be worth it.

Yesterday, President Barack Obama stopped by to say howdy…yes, specifically to me…because I am American people. He even went to my favorite attraction in this city, the Museum of Nature & Science (because they have dinosaurs) and signed the Economic Stimulus Bill of (big gulp) $787 BILLION in delegated financial aid. Oddly enough, the alleged reason that the President chose the Museum as the site wasn't because of the dinosaurs (again, allegedly) or even the fact that his good buddy and advisor Dr Mookie Love could see him from his 34th floor apartment window not quite two miles away…or even that Denver was the site of the DNC shortly before his advisor Dr Love moved out here…but rather because the roof of the Museum has a solar energy paneled roof…and this package is suppose to stimulate the economy as well as "green energy" related programs. I'm still pretty convinced that it's the dinosaurs though…but that's not the point. The point is…that the check has been signed…and if you want to (allegedly) follow where the money's going, you can check out the website (http://www.blogger.com/www.recovery.gov) and see who gets it. Who knows? Through trickle-down economics, it may be you…in a few years. Today, he's in Phoenix for the unveiling of a program to help millions of homeowners fend off foreclosures. Desert cities like Phoenix & Vegas have been hit hardest by this…but there was something mentioned in the stimulus package that get this blogger a little excited.

Monorail! Monorail! MONORAIL!!! - Okay, so in this (sigh) $787 BILLION bill, there's mention of $400 tax breaks per person, bailing out the auto industry & Wall Street (after first mocking them incessantly) and so on…but there's also a part that includes $8 BILLION for high-speed rail projects (you know, like on the first Mission: Impossible movie). Cool, right? It gets better. What if I were to tell you…that the top proposed project in this endeavor…was a 311 MPH train whose track ran from the Happiest Place on Earth…all the way to Disneyland? What? No, they're not one and the same. I'm talking about the Happiest Place on Earth a.k.a. Sin City a.k.a. Las Vegas, Nevada…to Disneyland in Anaheim, California…in less than two hours…through the Sierra Nevadas. Can you tell how excited I am? Sure, there's a part of me that thinks about a salesman voiced by Phil Hartman coming into Springfield and breaking into song mid-sales pitch…but there's another part of me that thinks "Hmm, I could have breakfast in Redondo Beach, spend the day at Disneyland with the family, take a nap on the bullet train and wake up to a lap dance at Sapphire…all in one day…and ugh, helping the environment too…cuz that's important to me too." Anyway, more to come as things develop…but I doubt it's going to be built in a week.

Last night, I also watched a great movie that I wanted to see for over a year now since the Mad Scientist told me about it. It's the movie "Choke" based on the book by Chuck Palahniuk that I actually read. I know, right? Originally, I was going to watch this movie when it came out in theatres...but because Utah's a prudish state...and this is the story involving sex addiction, Jesus, kidnapping, choking, scams, strippers, and foul language...it was played on one theatre, one showing, opening night, in Logan (about two hours from where I live) and then was never seen again. Well, thanks Netflix for making this possible. It's actually a pretty good movie almost directly adapted from the book (except for a few things and a different ending...but still pretty good). Sam Rockwell plays Victor Mancini, a medical school drop-out sex addict who scams people into sending him money by choking on food in restaurants, letting people save him, they give him money...and he passes it along to a nursing home that takes care of his sick & crazy mother (Angelica Huston). Along the way, he meets a lovely doctor Paige (Kelly Macdonald) and the story goes from there. Just check it out.

Wanna Be In Pictures? - Have you ever wanted to be a big time Hollywood producer? Accept awards for your films? Make big decisions when times are tough? Wheel & deal with other big shots? Hire & fire on a whim? Yell into cellular phones while cruising the PCH and snorting coke off a hooker's ass? Destroy all who question you and your omnipotent power over them? Me too. Now, here's your chance…sort of. Widely derided German director Uwe Boll (who has brought you such ridiculous crap as "Bloodrayne", "Alone in the Dark" and a bunch of other video game adaptations that sucked) has found a new way to finance his upcoming films - online punters. For around $49, you can be a 'co-producer' on Boll's terrorist disaster tale "Blackout". Boll hopes to raise $18.5 million through the film's Web site TheBlackoutFilm.com. Those who sign up and transfer the money are promised a limited-edition DVD of the film (normally $3 in your local bargain bin three months after nationwide theatrical release) plus a chance to win a trip to the set and other prizes. The site will be open till March 31st. If the planned budget is not reached by then, but at least 43% of the desired cash has been collected, Boll may elect to make the movie with a smaller budget. If not, he says he will return most of the cash to investors with at least $40 from each payment being returned should the film not get made (processing fees). Boll is currently shooting the apocalyptic thriller "The Storm" starring Lauren Holly ("Dumb & Dumber" & "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story") and Luke Perry ("90210", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "8 Seconds"). It's a bold new move from Uwe Boll…who is widely regarded as a running joke in Hollywood because…well, his movies are just pretty damn terrible. Okay, I liked "In the Name of the King" last year…but other than that, the only reason to watch the movies is just to see Kristanna Loken naked in one of the most awkward sex scenes ever or just seeing how hard up for money great actors like Sir Ben Kingsley are in today's film industry. I do like to see Udo Kier & Billy Zane in movies still though. Anyway, he's basically the Ed Wood of our generation…so there's that appeal…but if you ever want to have your name in the end credits of a movie, this is probably the easiest way to do it. Who knows? Maybe if I win that trip to the set (wherever that may be…maybe Prague…but more than likely Culver City) then I'll get to meet Kristanna Loken…and I can share my dream about the Terminator taking my Johnson…and she'll fall madly in Lust with me. It could happen. Don't judge me.

Sci-Fi Babes - Okay, so since I'm talking about a Terminator, apparently there's this website called MSN Movies that has listed the Top Sci-Fi Movie Babes of All Time…and Megan Fox was voted Number One (I told you she was going to be HUGE) but this is amid some controversy. Sure, she's hot. There is no doubt. In fact, she's so hot, I'm starting to question whether she may be a robot too…but she's only been in one big movie…and we're talking about all time here. Anyway, here's the top five from the poll…followed by my write-in votes for #6-10. I'm always up to suggestions though…so let me know what you think & if you have any that I might have missed..

  1. Megan Fox (Transformers) - 33% - Again, can't argue really on hotness…but yeah...

  2. Halle Berry (X-Men) - 26% - Academy Award winning Bond girl, so why do I keep thinking about Swordfish?

  3. Milla Jovovich (Fifth Element) - 17% - Now, you KNOW my baby's mama would be higher on MY list. The Perfect Being…and she was in a zombie trilogy.

  4. Natalie Portman (Star Wars) - 8% - Apparently she & Carrie Fisher tied…but all I have to say is, where's O'Hura?

  5. Sigourney Weaver (Alien Quadrilogy) - 8% - "Get away from her you BITCH!!!"

  6. Natasha Henstridge (Species) - Even starred on an episode of South Park as "the chick from Species" and everybody knew who they were talking about.

  7. Cast of Battlestar Galactica TV Series - Have you SEEN this show? I think like four of Maxim's Top 100 Hottest Hotties star in this series…and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) and even Mary McDonnell (Independence Day & Dances with Wolves). Still doesn’t make up for the fact that one of Edward James Olmos' parents may have been an orange.

  8. Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3) - Linda Hamilton is a handsome woman…but she just doesn't really do it for me. This sexbot beat out Sean Young in Blade Runner by this much.

  9. Jane Fonda (Barbarella) - "Is that a Sci-fi movie?" "What else would it be?"

  10. The chick with three boobs (Total Recall) - "You do know the middle one was paper mache, right?" "Oh gee, can I change my answer? Of course I know it's fake, I don't care." Anyway, write-in votes are accepted.

By the way, in my absence, feel free to check out the Angry Alien website for one of my favorite pointless internet hilarities, two-hour Hollywood stories shortened to thirty seconds…and performed by bunnies. They're quite hilarious…and I have to say that my personal favorite would be "Fight Club" though there are about a dozen that I've seen multiple times like "Rocky" and "Reservoir Dogs." Enjoy. Have a great weekend everybody!!!

Rebel Without a Plause

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Working some overtime last night for a different department in the company...and it was pretty cool. It was good, hard work in an area that I had absolutely no experience whatsoever...but with my outstanding work ethic, keen sense of direction, and amazing charm, I was able to pull it off and get kudos from the managers of the other department. I also found out that apparently they make more money than me in that department...so we'll see how that goes...but I like my current job right now...and they may be pulling my leg. Some people do that...especially to the new kid. By the way, I tell people that I've been working with the company for over a decade...and they look at me like, "What? You've been with the company since you were ten years old or something?" "No, I'm 27." "Get the f**k out!!! Really? I swear I thought you were maybe 21." "It's okay, people have thought I was 21 since I was 15...and not much has changed." By the way, took a "What's Your Real Age" test thing on Facebook...and apparently I'm really six years old. I know you are...but what am I? Anyway, today's been laundry, grocery shopping, and football...so here's some news...

Plausible Sci-Fi Movies - I read an article the other day about science fiction movies that are really plausible...if not already well on their way to becoming reality. Now, a lot of sci-fi movies are purely fantastic...like just about everything to do with Star Wars & Star Trek...but here are some movies that they mentioned as plausible...and some of my thoughts on them...as well as a few others I'm gonna throw in...because as both a science & movie nerd, I feel I have the right.

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - It's no accident that the classic sci-fi film 2001 was rooted in good science, having sprung from the mind of the late, great Arthur C. Clarke. Clarke's background in science informed and inspired the setting in 2001, describing geosynchronous satellites, artificial intelligence, and commercial space travel. Clarke lived long enough to see the satellites he envisioned actually put into orbit, and in the deserts of New Mexico, a "spaceport" is planned that will allow paying passengers to see our pale blue dot from near space. For those of you who haven't seen this Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, you should check it out. Like most Kubrick, it's about three hours long and slow at points...but it really adds to the atmosphere of being alone...in space...with a computer system running your world. Creepy...and state of the art CGI (for forty years ago) and I'm a little disappointed that the real 2001 wasn't quite the same way...but they may have only been off by a few digits. 2010 maybe?
  2. The Truman Show (1998) - It's hard for many young people to remember, but there was a time before the 24-hour news feed and the reality TV craze. The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey as the unwitting star of a voyeuristic television show watched by billions around the planet, foretold the coming of America's weekly entertainment. Not only was close, continuous surveillance plausible, it already exists in current hits like Big Brother and Survivor. When this movie first came out, I thought that this was EXACTLY what was going to happen (and sometimes think that I'm being watched...but that's just the REAL Big Brother) but it's a great movie...as I've reviewed and commented on before.
  3. Gattaca (1997) - In the not-too-distant future world of Gattaca, children's genes are pre-selected by their upper-class parents for the best traits; those babies whose genes are imperfect are treated as second-class citizens. Today DNA analysis is common, and several companies offer genetic testing for as little as a few hundred dollars. Genetic profiling? Health insurance companies potentially denying claims based on genetic predisposition to a disease? For many, this fear is not science fiction but science fact. As more is found out, I'm pretty sure that this is a prophetic tale. Honestly, if you were going to have children...and could predetermine that they wouldn't be autistic, diabetic, free of heart problems, lung problems, developmental problems, stuff like that, wouldn't you do it? Now how about acne problems, skin conditions, pigmentation, vision problems, maybe a little on the short side, obesity, history of balding, anything like that? Where would you draw the line...or would you? We all want what's best for our offspring. It's natural...even if the means isn't exactly natural. Anyway, keep an eye on your local science report...or my blog. I'm really interested by this kind of stuff...both scientifically and from a sociological & psychological perspective. Like I said, I'm a nerd.
  4. Iron Man (2008) - Marvel Comics hero Tony Stark is a genius inventor whose suit of armor-basically a souped-up mechanical exoskeleton run by computers-is probably more scientifically plausible than most superheroes. Though Iron Man's nifty gadgets, including his handy laser repulsors and jet boots, remain science fiction, in many cases the underlying scientific principles are sound. Practical problems, such as the suit's cost and weight, would make a real Iron Man unlikely...at this point. For anybody who watches Futureweapons on the Discovery Channel though, it's again only a matter of time...and they're actually doing pretty good. Now it's just a matter of getting the costs down and working out the kinks.
  5. Jurassic Park (1993) - Part of what made the late author Michael Crichton an enormously popular writer was his ability to extrapolate current science technology. Science fiction has always been about "What if?", and few modern authors blended science fact with science fiction so successfully. Though scientists are a long way off from cloning dinosaurs-they haven't gone much past Dolly the cloned sheep-the scientific fundamentals are there. By the end of the century, real cloned dinos might just be chasing down tourists! Really, the main reason that they haven't done it yet (allegedly) is because of all the fuss & protest about stem cell research and the same problems brought up by the Gattaca scenario and exploiting the human gene. I'm waiting to see this new theme park on Isla Nublar or wherever it was pretty soon though. You know me. I'm a super dino geek. If being an archelogist paid well, you may be talking to another kind of Dr. Mookie Love, digger of dinosaurs. Now for a few of my additions...
  6. Blade Runner (1982) - You all know and love this Ridley Scott masterpiece about the future, bounty hunting, and sexbots. You all are also probably aware of my borderline obsession with sexbots. The reason I picked this movie over Spielberg's "A.I." is because...well, I actually watched all of this movie...and didn't turn it off about 2/3 of the way through...because I just didn't care what happened. Okay, maybe this movie isn't even really about sexbots...but there really hasn't been a good movie about it...so I'm just going to say this one because it's a badass movie and everybody should see it. Don't judge me.
  7. The Day After Tomorrow (2004) - Al Gore may be the Cassandra of our time...but it's very plausible. Sure, some points were a little blown out of proportion because they were making an action movie...and let's face it, the director was the guy who did "Independence Day" so it had to be a little exciting. Recycle, ride bikes, hold in your farts, do all the cool green stuff that you can...or else Mother Nature may bitchslap us all. I think that was the point of that movie.
  8. The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008) - Moreso than "Independence Day" or "War of the Worlds" or any of those other Invasion Movies, I see this one as the most logical. Why? Okay, if this superintelligent race mastered intergalactic travel, don't you think they would have done it...and been able to keep their planet intact...so no need to take all of our resources by force, right? I mean...obviously they could...but I would hope their mastery of the atom or whatever incredible fuel process they have would also make them a calm, peaceful and content people...who just want to help us all. Also, I just think this movie rocks...and the remake will still be cool...even though Keanu's playing Klaatu...but let's face, that emotionless fascade of a man has BORN to play that role...and maybe Johnny Utah.
  9. Planet of the Apes (1968) - Keep your eyes on those damned dirty apes. That's all I have to say.
  10. Idiocracy (2006) - Mike Judge may be this generation's Isaac Asimov or Philip K. Dick or at least a Stan Lee or something. For those of you who haven't seen this movie, check it out. It's about 500 years from now...when only stupid people are breeding. It's hilarious...yet scary at the same time if you really really think about it.

Anyway, now that I've thoroughly turned you all pee-pee scared, I will request that you all have a fun & exciting & safe Sunday. Love, peace, and chicken grease!!!

Where Should I Go Next?
