The Most Interesting Athlete in the World

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Wednesday night, I watched “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” starring Michael Rooker on Netflix. I had this sitting in my disc queue for a while as I had heard it mentioned a few times before as kind of an underground slasher flick. So, here’s the story that I gathered. The movie was shot in Chicago in 1986 on a budget of like… $100,000. However, the movie was considered so dark & violent & graphic at the time… that it took almost three years of appeals to make it releasable to the public after its initial screenings at some festivals. The story is based on the confessions of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas (Rooker) and is directed by John McNaughton (also directed the legendary “Wild Things” & another movie I’ve been interested in checking out called “Mad Dog & Glory”). The plot is that there’s this guy Henry who becomes a roommate with an ex-con part-time gas station attendant named Otis & his sister Becky. They’ve all fallen on hard times, but make ends meet somehow (usually selling drugs) but Otis soon finds out that Henry… has a dark side. Sure, he knew before that he killed his mama & that’s why he was in jail… but apparently… it’s even darker. Henry kills… almost randomly… and never the same way twice… basically just for the thrill. Well, Otis is intrigued… and gets off on the rush of his first kill… and the movie goes from there. The movie is… basically just a cold, exact, calculated telling of Henry’s killings with no real need for reasoning as to why he does it. He just enjoys doing it… and even has a bit of a code… or does he? It’s actually done fairly well if you’re into creepy stories with seedy underbellies… you know, as opposed to stories with morality conflicts& happy endings. Even the awkward soundtrack that’s a mix of slow score, coupled with some synthesizers… and inserting some screams of terror or something along with it… really helps to create that atmosphere of just awkward observation, but with a little glimpse into the twisted mind of a serial killer. Michael Rooker (aka Merle from “Walking Dead”) acts the sh*t out of this… and yeah, I really liked it… but it’s definitely not for everyone. Watch with caution. Also, as far as the violence… yeah, it’s bloody & there are a LOT of slow establishing shots of murder scenes… but if you’ve seen any horror movies in the past 20 years, it’s nothing compared to those.

Thursday night, I watched a movie from last year called “Phantom” starring Ed Harris, David Duchovny, William Fichtner, Lance Henriksen (briefly) & Sean Patrick Flanery and written-directed by Todd Robinson (“White Squall” & “Lonely Hearts”). The movie is “inspired” by true events… but not really sure how much of it is real… but whatever. In the late 60’s, an epileptic Cold War Soviet submarine captain (Harris) is sent on a top secret mission on a moment’s notice. Along with his crew, there are a few extra “specialists” (led by Duchovny) who are testing a cloaking device known as “The Phantom” (title). Well, once they get out there… the specialists turn out to be KGB… and they take over the submarine, complete with a nuclear payload, and head towards the U.S. Naval Base at Midway to start WWIII… unless the captain and his crew can regain control of the submarine… and not die in the process. If you’re a big fan of “Hunt for Red October” or “U-571” or any of those kind of movies, then you’ll probably love this. Ed Harris gives an amazing performance as he’s prone to do. I like that they’re supposed to be Russian, but they all have the standard American accents, which is good… because I’m sure they’d all be awful to listen to. I love that David Duchovny is my elder doppleganger (hope to look like that in 20 years when I’m 53 as well) but… you know his acting style is… very muted. You’ve seen the X-Files and/or Californication. He delivers lines almost monotonically… with occasional yelling, but always maintaining the stoic face and immediately returning to almost utter boredom. Perhaps that’s his secret to eternal youth & banging cocktail waitresses… but aside from that, not the greatest actor in the world. Sorry, Filly! Overall though, the movie was decent… not great or anything… but like I said, if you like that kind of movie, check it out. If not, you’ll probably pass.

The Real Life Most Interesting Man in the World – So… I was watching the Today Show this morning… and I’ll be damned if I didn’t see a story that was just ridiculously awesome to me. Did you know there’s a 55 year old Olympian in these Olympics? His sixth? Oh… it’s more than just that too. His name is Hubertus von Hohenlohe-Langenburg… excuse me, PRINCE Hubertus von Hohenlohe-Langenburg… and he’s obviously skiing for Mexico. Obviously, right? Because he is… skiing… for the country of Mexico… in these Winter Olympics. Fact. More facts that you might find interesting (and possible straight out of a future Dos Equis commercial):

·         Born in Mexico City in 1959 (dual citizenship)
·         He’s a descendant of German royalty (hence the Prince)
·         Heir to a Volkswagen fortune
·         German pop singer under names Andy Himalaya and Royal Disaster
·         Gallery-level photographer & artist
·         Businessman
·         Six-time Olympic Alpine skier (1984, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2010 & 2014)
·         Flag-bearer for the country of Mexico
·         Wore a Mariachi-inspired outfit during his latest run (previously Goucho)
·         Currently resides in Liechtenstein
·         Speaks five languages fluently

Anyway, check out a few interviews with this guy… I think he’s on Piers Morgan soon & he’s been running the gamut the past few days. I’m just saying… he seems like he’s going to be okay when he decides to retire from skiing. Now he’ll have more free time to take pictures, bang 20-year old model-actresses, pick up another language (Swahili?) and release a few albums before living the quiet life. What? Ladies… he’s single… and here’s another article about the guy that takes a little different turn courtesy of the great writers at Grantland.

Anyway, that should do it for this entry. I should definitely have some more stories to share after this weekend… which includes a trip to Sacramento & beyond. Have a great weekend everybody!!!

Some Things I Kinda Hate to Like

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

It’s been a few days… and I’m feeling MUCH better… basically ready for another adventure this weekend… but more on that later…

College Sports in Summary – I feel like this little story kinda sums up how a lot of major universities prepare young people for the future… while collecting a heft f**king profit from it too. Head football coach Charlie Strong recently accepted the dream job of head coach at the University of Texas… so after coaching the University of Louisville through some tough years and coaching what may be the #1 pick in the draft this year (Teddy Bridgewater), he’s moved up to his dream job. Under their former coach, the Louisville football team's "core values" were out in the open for everyone to see. On wallpaper outside the Cardinals' team meeting room, Strong listed the five things he most expected from his players:

1. Honesty
2. Treat women with respect

3. No drugs

4. No stealing

5. No guns

Simple. Core. Values. I’d love for my children to have those no matter what they did for a living. So Louisville was now without a coach… and they started interviews. Who did they hire to coach these young men? Former Louisville coach Bobby Petrino. Hold on though. Let’s go over this decision real quick. Nobody is surprised that Bobby Petrino is returning to big-time college football after coaching Western Kentucky this last year… but let’s backtrack a bit to when he first LEFT (emphasized emphatically) Louisville in 2006. During his time there, he was interviewing for every other job that came up… but in 2006, he had just signed a 10-year, $25 million extension to stay at the University… then a few months later, he left to coach the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons… and short story even shorter, he quit on the Falcons 13 games into a singular 16-game season. Next up was a year or so later, he had a scandalous four-year tenure at Arkansas that ended in April 2012, when he was fired after wrecking his motorcycle with HIS MISTRESS on the back and then LYING to his boss about it. Oh, during his first four years at Louisville, his teams had a record of 41 wins and 9 losses… and he had big school pedigree, so it sadly was only a matter of time before he was hired by a desperate football program (Western Kentucky this last year). That being said, do you want this guy as a role model for your children/young men? Petrino has an 83-30 record as a college coach and knows X's and O's as well as anyone. Petrino might be morally bankrupt, but he wins games and sells tickets, which sadly seems to be the only things that really matter in major college athletics anymore. Period. How else do you explain it? Throw in Louisville's NCAA championship in men's basketball last season and it has been the golden age of Cardinals athletics. They really could’ve hired just about ANYBODY to be their football coach & a pinnacle of integrity even in a controversial realm like “amateur” football. But Petrino won big at Louisville the first time, so I guess they’re convinced he'll do it again. Hopefully, Petrino's second tenure will come without the lying and deception that made him one of the sport's most despised and mistrusted coaches… but who knows. Maybe the wallpaper will be replaced outside the team’s meeting room because… well…

1.    Honesty – Everything from “Sure, I’ll be here for ten years” to “Yeah, nobody else involved in the motorcycle crash” to "We're just friends" to “I love you, my darling wife”
2.    Treat women with respect – Wife… mistress… motorcycle… hiding it for quite a while…
3.    No drugs – As far as I know, he’s clean
4.    No stealing – Not sure how much he got paid to bail on Louisville & the Falcons but… technically…
5.    No guns – Guaranteed he’s gonna be packin’ heat due to angry alumni

I know… “$teve, he’s a football coach at a higher learning establishment in Kentucky… a beacon of human intelligence in itself” but he’s hardly the only case. Just a REALLY extreme case… like… it’s tough to even think up a more ridiculous possible example. It’d be like Hitler getting re-elected Chancellor of Germany in 1952 because “he has a tremendous track record for turning around the economy… and he’s a former Time Magazine’s Man of the Year.” When you send your child to college, you want them to learn, grow & become better than you. You want them to be safe, have a passion for life, and have a set of core values to pass on to future generations. Whether they’re there on an academic or sports scholarship… or you’re paying… or they’re somehow paying their way (my route), it doesn’t matter. You want them to have teachers & other role models in the establishment that they can look up to… and can guide them through these tough years. One thing that I can say about Coach Petrino is that he has won football games… and he’s always looking for the next step up. Yes, Charlie Strong took a “next step up” when he took the Texas job leaving Louisville behind in the first place. That’s a fact. If you’re offered the exact same job for three times the pay, lower taxes, full control of staffing, a more established company & less of a “we don’t serve your kind ‘round here” vibe… You’d take that f**king job too. My beef is with giving the man who betrayed you before (and many others like you), cheated on his wife repeatedly, may be a pathological liar… and giving him the same job back 7-8 years later when you were better off without him… and you could’ve hired a myriad of other people who would do just as good of a job, if not better… and definitely be a better Leader for these young men. Then again, who knows? Maybe I’m wrong & he’s the Second Coming. Just win football games. That’s all that matters really.

Tuesday night, Dizzy & I watched “The Wolverine” starring Hugh Jackman yet again as the iconic X-Men Comics character. Now, I’m a HUGE fan of Marvel and their (at least recent) movie adaptations. HUGE!!! They’ve had great success & deserve every bit of it. That being said… I REALLY didn’t care for this movie. Like even a little bit… and it started early… and kept reminding me why throughout. Okay, I’m going to give you the first few minutes of the movie. Starts out in a Japanese POW camp 1945… and our mysterious mutant Logan (Jackman) is basically in an underground bunker-isolation chamber. How he got there is anybody’s guess really… because he IS Wolverine… but let’s say through some kind of miracle they drugged him & he woke up down there in the hole. Somebody in the crow’s nest sees a bomber coming in the horizon… yes… he’s in Hiroshima. The guards start opening the gates so that everybody can try to escape the coming bombing raid. A young guard opens Logan’s cage & he tells him to get down in the hole with him. No thanks, I’m going to fall on my sword for I have brought great dishonor to my country & famiry (not a typo). Moments before the atomic bomb lands & he falls on his sword, Logan grabs him, pulls him down in the hole… and basically goes Indy  & the Crystal Skulls with a nuclear bomb going off… but it’s okay, because the basically immortal Wolverine is holding a (rusty & holed) lead bunker lid kinda over this kid. Sure, he’s melting away but quickly regenerating… and radiation or intense heat don’t exist in this realm… but basically the kid is fine. They wait it out in the bunker for radiation to pass (I assume for the next 20 years, but probably more like… maybe 3 minutes?) and then this kid owes Logan. Smash cut to him waking up from a dream (MAJOR sign that this movie is going to suck even after all that). Who’s lying next to him in bed? Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) who died by his own claws in a previous movie. You know where this is going, right? After a pointless little conversation, smash cut to him waking up AGAIN (REAAALLLLLY BAD SIGN with the double dream wakeup that this movie is going to be hella lame). That being said, I still went with it… it’s a Wolverine movie.

So… the movie goes on. Basically Logan is living the Canadian wilderness or something as per usual when he’s being moody… and a Japanese girl finds him at a bar. She has been sent to let him know that the man he saved in Hiroshima (now… what? 90?) is dying (GASP!!!). However, he has to see Logan before he dies. “No thanks. I haven’t seen this guy in almost 70 years… or even thought about him until that crazy ass dream this morning.” “Oh, come on!” “Sigh… okay.” So he goes to see him… and he says that he wants to make Logan’s dream come true… to be mortal. WHAT? Okay… so… apparently… it’s the typical vampire-immortal BS drama… “Oh no, everybody around me dies… will I’m forced to be a perfect physical specimen for eternity, never wavering, bang a different chick every week (shooting blanks apparently BTW), having AMAZING & unrealistic powers, suffering no real consequences other than my own twisted personal issues, banging several different chicks every week… what’s that? I already mentioned that part? Well it’s a pretty big part of what I do with this CURSE of mine…” but the only twist with Wolverine… is he’s not restricted by vampire stuff like coming out only at night, killing innocent people to survive, or anything like that. He’s just an all-purpose badass… but yeah, thankfully this already-rotting Japanese guy wants to help him with all that mess. Long story short, he gets poisoned or something and becomes mortal… but now has to save the Japanese guy’s daughter (cuz she’s hot & like… six inches taller than anybody else in the movie other than the crazy evil chick, I think). The rest of the story you can kinda guess from there. By the way, while he’s apparently “mortal”, he’s shot… about 80 times… stabbed another dozen or so… and with samurai sabres, not just broken beer bottles… there’s an action scene on top of a bullet train going 200 MPH that’s just ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS in every conceivable way… MAJOR plot holes all around… complete disregard for anything resembling reality or laws of physics… all of the fight scenes are standard & stupid… bunch of yakuza run up, get stabbed, hundreds more where they came from… oh & this topper…

The final battle is with a giant 3-ton robot made entirely out of adamantium, which is the X-Men equivalent of Unobtainium. It carries any chemical property that it needs to have at that particular time. For example, it can have a light or heavy molecular weight… so you can either make a 12-foot tall, 3-ton robot… or it can be the entire skeleton of Logan/Wolverine who is a 5-foot-6, 200 pound man. Most known though is that it’s basically indestructible… unless apparently, there’s a superheated blade of the same adamantium… and then it cuts through other adamantium as if it were butter… because everybody knows that the best way to cut any metallic device is to heat the same metallic device to a point where by the law of transference, it would be hot enough to pass that heat along to the other metallic device, raising it to the point it would melt away. Of course, that basically means… you would have to get this heated device INSANE AMOUNTS HOTTER THAN THE OTHER DEVICE’S MELTING POINT… WHICH IS THE SAME DEVICE, BASICALLY TO LIQUID HOT MAGMA… ONLY YOU’D THEN BE WEILDING A BLADE OF LIQUID HOT MAGMA!!! There’s also a few times where 200 pound Logan jumps into the robot & forces it to move like five meters to fall off a side-railing or something. If my math is correct, he’d probably have to have launched himself something like 100 MPH to make that thing even budge… if it were standing still… and then he’s basically be hitting a brick wall… but that’s okay, because he’s an adamantium-boned, immortal badass, remember? I’m sorry… I… apparently elaborate more on the movies that I absolutely can’t stand than those that I actually liked. I basically do this so… you won’t want to see it & save two hours of your life by reading… about five minutes of my rants. So yeah, did not care for this movie at all. It was actually kind of insulting on just about every level. The action was bad, the plot was worse, there was a retardation in character development, just pass all around. I can’t believe this got better reviews than “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” or a multitude of other movies. I think a lot of critics out there are f**king idiots on the take from Hollywood… at least the professional ones… and I think that I’ll keep that opinion until I am one of those hypocritical f**ks. Until then, hopefully this helps.

We followed that up with another movie that we figured would be horrible… but were expecting it to be so… and then it went far beyond. The movie was “Dinosaur Island” on Netflix starring… you don’t know anybody from it... but produced by Roger Corman (more on him in the next movie review). The plotline read that a group of soldiers crash lands in the Blue Pacific (I’m assuming most of it is blue though during the day) and they wash up on an uncharted island. They soon discover that it’s inhabited by big-breasted virgin Amazonian warriors… and dinosaurs. The warrior village takes them in as Gods… but now they have to destroy The Great One (T-Rex) or face his wrath as they’ve been offering their virgins to appease him. Yup, that’s the plot. Oh… it was made in the mid-90’s too, like within a year of “Jurassic Park.” A few things… first & foremost, I think this was a “Skinemax” film back when Cinemax was starting because there’s a blatant gyrating breast and/or non-penetration sex scene every ten minutes like clockwork. Not entirely expected when Dizzy picked this movie. Also, the dinosaurs… are a mixture of hand puppets, Claymation & full body suits that despite being really horrible compared to CGI nowadays, I kind of enjoyed. Oh… and I think it’s supposed to be a cheesy bad comedy or something… so be prepared for bad jokes… luckily there are plenty of breasts to distract from all that though. Check it out if you want. It’s about 75 minutes long I think… so make a drinking game out of it. Big sip of beer for seeing a nipple, take a shot for sex scene, another sip for every time you hear somebody say “Great One” or some stupid sh*t like that.

Wednesday night, I watched a documentary called “Machete Maidens Unleashed!” that’s about the exploitation/grindhouse films that were shot & made in the Philippines back in the 60’s, 70’s & early 80’s. These were the gory, low-cost, bad-plot movies that would fill theatres & drive-ins for decades but because the Philippines were so much cheaper than shooting in Hollywood (and less laws there in the dictatorship that wanted movies to be made there), producer Roger Corman basically moved in & made a KILLING. They were turning out dozens of movies a year and because they didn’t cost much to make, they were all turning profits no matter how horrible they were. Probably the biggest star to really come out of the whole thing was Pam Grier (“The Big Doll House”, “Black Mama White Mama” and “Jackie Brown” once Tarantino wanted to make an exploitation film). Basically it goes through the history of it… and then in the late 70’s, Hollywood got wind of it and starting making movies like “Apocolypse Now” there… and then found that they could make exploitation films in-house with success of “Jaws” (think about it) and other big money makers… so the Filipino movie industry tapered off… but I found it amazingly interesting… and if you’re a fan of quirky movie making or marketing, I highly recommend that you check it out. It’s on Netflix of course.

Well, that’ll do it for tonight. Join us next time when Dizzy & I go on yet another Brewery-filled Weekend Adventure. This time… we head north on Highway 101 to tour& experience some of the more highly-respected breweries in NorCal – Anderson Valley Brewing in Boonville, Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa & Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma… maybe even a few more if we can squeeze them in… but we shall see. Have a great weekend everybody!!!

DAMN YOU, JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH!!!

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

So do you think I did okay with the birthday surprise on the last entry? Dizzy thinks so… I’m humble in my awesomeness but I think that I did pretty good… and the comments have been good on the Facebook. Maybe I am pretty good at this dating thing… or at least the presents part. Aside from that, Father’s Day was pretty cool. I talked with my stepdad for a few minutes and wished him a happy father’s day. He’s a good dude & I feel like he doesn’t get the respect that he should most of the time. He’s soft-spoken and… let’s face it, easily mockable most of the time… but he’s a great guy, very nice & most importantly makes my mom happy. When he married into the family, he basically went from a kind of snooty, arrogant “upper class” family into a gaggle of rednecks… and I know it wasn’t easy. Hell, I was the good one & I gave him plenty of grief… but I was a teenager, what do you expect? My brother though has never been a treat to anybody… and even his own son has ended up siding more with the other side of the family & staying away from him… which is unfortunately because he really loves that red-headed stepbrother of mine (as he should). So with that, thanks for putting up with all of us, Lavar! You’re a good sh*t…

As for my dad, he’s been recovering from his torn MCL & ACL since Easter when it happened, but he’s back at work with crutches. I got him some books as a present, one is an encyclopedia about Harley-Davidson motorcycles… and the other was a nice little one I found on Amazon about a man who basically went through his dad’s journal about a great road trip across America just before WWII on his Harley… called “The Old Man & the Harley” or something like that. He said that he has it next to his seat at the house so he can read it… and that’s cool. He & I are a lot a like… and apparently that means difficult to shop for. Anything that we particularly need or even want, we’ll basically take care of it or build it ourselves… so usually we get things like gift certificates, movies that came out for the holidays that we may or may not already have, sports memorabilia, stuff like that. Sure it can be frustrating for those trying to get gifts… but honestly, as long as we get a quick phone call or letter or something that just says “Hey, happy birthday” or whatever, we’re pretty good with that. Cash works too. Anyway, I gave him a call last weekend because… well, I thought it was Father’s Day… but also this last weekend when it was… and he’s in high spirits & I can’t wait to see both of them in about a month. Happy Father’s (or Not-A-Father’s) Day EVERYBODY!!!

So for the past week or so, I’ve been playing a new video game “NBA 2K13” and yes, I’m about a year behind everybody else in the world when it comes to video games because… unless it’s “Assassin’s Creed 5” or about every third “Madden” title, then I can wait a few months until it drops from $60+ to $20. Basically, this is game may have been made specifically for me just from an introductory perspective… it’s a basketball game… produced by Jay-Z… has past greats involved… and has a number of different play modes including a mode called My Career where you basically make a character & take them through their career. From rookie camps to draft day to riding the bench to making your way to starter to endorsement deals to answering media questions to free agency to All Star games to playoffs & championship to maybe even the Hall of Fame. Pretty cool, right? Well, like I said, I’m a week into it… and it’s my first time playing a 2K game (usually an EA Sports guy) and there’s a bit of a learning curve… but I’m liking it thus far, even if it’s frustrating at some points. Seriously guys, I’m not going to miss wide open layups just so you can keep me under 20 points a game off the bench… and the whole free throw system seems really off to me… still have no idea where & when I’m supposed to release it because the realistic way always seem wrong… but I get it. Gotta walk before you ball. The soundtrack is bangin’… the play for the most part is pretty smooth though there are a few things that irritate me… like how I suddenly turn ghost from time to time & people can pass right through me on defense… and again, the layups that just won’t go in (for that matter they won’t let a 6’9” small forward with a dunk rating in the mid 60’s dunk either, WTF?). I’ll keep you posted but I really like the game thus far.

Current Status: After an average showing at the Rookie Showcase, Steve Love was drafted #14 by the Milwaukee Bucks (though real life #14 pick John Henson is also on the team). After producing decent numbers on 5-6 minutes of the bench for the first ten games or so. I’ve moved into the starting lineup… so I get about 15 minutes a game (5 minute quarters) and… basically the hardest part for me getting points… is getting the ball away from Brandon Jennings & Monta Ellis, the two ballhog guards… but Ellis is injured now so… yay, I’ve stepped into the two-guard spot where I can drain threes a few times before they play tough on me. Starting to get a feel for the defensive controls & post moves too & always dishing out dimes so it’s going pretty good. About 18 games into the season, we’re 11-7 but 6-1 since I was in the lineup (tough loss to the Spurs, who “magically” went on 12-0 runs whenever I was out of the game) and even though my stats aren’t AMAZING due to a sub-40% free throw and/or layups being very iffy, I’m doing pretty decent. Here’s a shot of my billboard & magazine cover…

Speaking of basketball, I decided to watch my first full game of the year… since it was Game 6 of the NBA Finals and my San Antonio Spurs (fan since David Robinson’s rookie year) were ready to wrap up their 5th title against the Miami Heat. So I went down to Café Prague to watch the game & Dizzy met up with me at halftime. Tim Duncan OWNED the first half, posting a career high with 25 first half points… but the Spurs were up by only six. They extended that lead to 10 at the start of the 4th… and then apparently LeBron James removed his headband… not unlike Clark Kent removing his glasses… and he brought them back to a good close game… a few no calls that would’ve been for the Spurs but hey, that’s how it’s played in the playoffs… then for some reason they decide to leave wide open in the corner, not a great three-point shooter… but THE GREATEST THREE-POINT SHOOTER IN NBA HISTORY, JESUS SHUTTLESWORTH HIMSELF… RAY ALLEN!!! So… of course he made the tying shot… hard fought overtime… and now there will be a Game 7 tomorrow night. The only catch… I have a work outing tomorrow night in honor of my new Boss Man. All I have to say is… if they don’t have a TV with the game on… then I’ll be excusing myself to go to the bathroom A LOT during the night. “Excuse me, nature calls… at the bar across the street… I’ll be back in… 35, 45 minutes. Oh… and I’m taking this beverage with me.” Anyway, first world problems… here’s the news…

Whining About Wine - Award-winning chef Charlie Trotter is being sued by two New York wine collectors who say he sold them a bottle of wine for more than $46,000 that wasn't what it said on the label. (GASP!!!) The federal lawsuit filed Thursday in Chicago accuses Trotter and one of his wine experts of duping them into buying what they thought was a magnum of 1945 Romanee-Conti from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti winery in June 2012. The collectors, Bekim and Ilir Frrokaj (Beh-KEEM' and ih-LEER' FRO'-kuh), say an appraisal firm concluded the bottle was counterfeit. They are seeking damages of more than $76,000 (emotional distress I’m sure). They accuse Trotter and his company of violating Illinois consumer fraud laws. An attorney for Trotter, John Riccione, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Friday. Here’s the thing… you’re buying a bottle of rotten grape juice. I mean… think about it. I’m a huge fan of wine, don’t get me started… and having a winery down the road would basically be a dream come true… but why would anyone spend $46,000 on a bottle of wine as opposed to… I don’t know, a luxury sedan? Does this sh*t cure cancer? No, wait… they’d add a few zeroes if that was the case… but still, it’s f**king grape juice. You got conned! Probably after Chuck Trotter got conned! After somebody else conned a fellow hustler & so on & so forth. Drink Mangria!

Birthday Suit – Speaking of ridiculous lawsuits, a production company making a documentary about the song "Happy Birthday to You" is challenging the copyright to the famous jingle. Good Morning To You Productions Corp., which is working on a film tentatively titled "Happy Birthday," argues in a lawsuit filed Thursday that the song should be "dedicated to public use and in the public domain." The company is seeking monetary damages and restitution of more than $5 million in licensing fees collected by Warner/Chappell Music Inc. from thousands of people and groups who've paid it licensing fees. "More than 120 years after the melody to which the simple lyrics of Happy Birthday to You is set was first published, defendant Warner/Chappell boldly, but wrongfully and unlawfully, insists that it owns the copyright to Happy Birthday to You," the lawsuit states. Warner/Chappell, based in Los Angeles, claims exclusive copyright to "Happy Birthday to You," which Guinness World Records has called the most famous song in the English language. The company, whose artists include Aretha Franklin, Barry Gibb, Rob Zombie, Madonna and Michael Jackson, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. Good Morning To You Productions argues that evidence dating to 1893 helps show the song's copyright expired around 1921. It says four previous copyrights to the melody of the similar-sounding song "Good Morning to All," filed in 1893, 1896, 1899 and 1907, have expired or been forfeited. The class action lawsuit says that Warner/Chappell claims the exclusive copyright to the song based on piano arrangements published in 1935 but that the copyright applies only to the piano arraignment and not to the melody or lyrics. LAWYERED!!! The film company filed the lawsuit after having to pay Warner/Chappell a $1,500 licensing fee and sign an agreement to use the song in a scene — or face a $150,000 penalty. What does it mean? Some lawyers are gonna get paid… and you can keep singing happy birthday dozens of times a year without looking over your shoulder for Big Brother… at least for a few more weeks. All I gotta say is… Cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake…

Diary of Not-Anne Frank - U.S. officials on Thursday unveiled the 400-page diary of Alfred Rosenberg, a top aide to Adolf Hitler, who oversaw the genocide against Jews and others during World War Two. The diary disappeared after the Nuremberg trials in 1946, sparking a nearly 70-year hunt that ended on April 5th in the upstate New York town of Lewiston, at the home of an academic named Herbert Richardson. The diary pages, hand-written in German and not yet completely translated into English by scholars, offers a broader look at the Third Reich's policies and practices, as well as an unvarnished account of a Nazi leader's thoughts, authorities said at a news conference on Thursday. "These 400 pages are a window into the dark soul of one of the great wrongs in human history," said John Morton, director of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, which investigates cases of missing cultural property. "It's significant because, as time marches on, there are fewer living witnesses of what happened during the Holocaust. We still don't know the full extent." Pages of the diary, which will eventually be turned over to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., were shown to reporters, including one entry dated April 1941. Rosenberg describes walking alone after "an important meeting" with Hitler, who told him: "Your great hour has come." Museum senior adviser Henry Mayer, who had been searching for the diary for 17 years, noted Rosenberg did not elaborate in the entry. "What Hitler described was so great, he couldn't put it down," Mayer told reporters. U.S. officials have long suspected that a prosecutor, Robert Kempner, smuggled the diary back to the United States after the Nuremberg trial. Born in Germany, Kempner fled to America in the 1930s to escape the Nazis, only to return for post-war trials. He is credited with helping reveal the existence of the Wannsee Protocol, the 1942 conference during which Nazi officials met to coordinate the extermination of the Jews, which they termed "The Final Solution." Kempner cited a few Rosenberg diary excerpts in his memoir and in 1956 a German historian published entries from 1939 and 1940. But the bulk of the diary never surfaced. After his death in 1993, heirs to his estate agreed to forfeit his possessions to the U.S. holocaust museum, but that agreement hit road blocks and the diary was never found. However in 1999, when cleaning out Kempner's home in suburban Philadelphia, a man found 40 boxes of documents, including papers outlining the Nazi's "aggressive war against and the plundering, spoliation and the economic exploitation of the Soviet Union by the Nazi regime," according to a 2003 court filing. But the diary was not among the materials. "That was what we were looking for, that's what was so frustrating," said Robert Wittman, the founder of the FBI's Art Crime Team, and now a private art security consultant. In recent months, Wittman and his son, Jeffrey, helped ICE locate the diary in New York. The diary offers Rosenberg's recollections from the spring of 1936 to the winter of 1944, according to an analysis by the Holocaust museum. Most entries are written in Rosenberg's looping cursive, some on paper torn from a ledger book and others on the back of official Nazi stationery, according to a U.S. government analysis obtained by Reuters. "Although it is a reminder of a dark time, the Rosenberg Diary is important to our understanding of history," said U.S. Attorney Charles M. Oberly. "Our hope is that it will provide valuable insight to historians." Why do I mention this? It’s history. First hand accounts of what transpired during this horrible time of history… and maybe some insight into how such a tragic thing came to be. I’m pretty intrigued by what the content of those pages may be… but it also seems like it might be a big buildup to a disappointing book based on the descriptions that the guy is giving… so we shall see. I’m guessing that it’s not going to sell quite as well as Anne Frank’s Diary though. Just a hunch…

Anyway, that should do it for tonight. Gotta make some tough decisions about tomorrow night… do the work thing… or watch Game 7… hopefully it’ll work out so I can just do both… and the Spurs win the championship ring for the thumb… and maybe Tim Duncan retires… or maybe he stays for a few more trips. Who knows? That’s why we all play the game I guess… have a great game everybody!!!

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Saturday was Dizzy’s birthday… but the real celebration for her birthday will be next week. Stay tuned for details (it’s a secret & she reads the blog). Besides, this weekend her mom was in town… and her cousin was graduating high school… so it was more about family togetherness than her lasting another year of sexiness. Friday night, I met up for dinner with her & her mom so we went to our favorite $5.99 all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet in Chinatown. What’s the name of the place? Good question. It’s near the corner of Grant & Jackson though. We ate there, then we hung out at her place that evening watching an old TV show from the 90’s.

Now, “Due South” is a delightful little show that Dizzy turned me on to… though I swear I’ve seen the end credits before, so it was probably before something I used to watch in the mid-90’s. Anyway, it’s a comedic series about a mountie named Benton Fraser (Paul Gross) who goes to the mean streets of Chicago to look for his father’s killer (pilot) and then decides to stay there with the Canadian consulate. With his trusty wolf Diefenbaker, he pairs up with a local Italian-American stereotype detective and gets caught in all kinds of do-gooder shenanigans. Now, if you’re looking for intense cop drama, you’re not going to find it here… at all… like even a little bit. There are many plot holes, but it’s a fun little series about a sweet, honest, dedicated & infallible mountie and how he just tries to bring a little good & justice to the underprivileged of Chicago. Dizzy has loved it since she was a young’un… and I kinda think she sees a lot of Benton Fraser in me… you know, the whole tall good-looking sweet gentleman superhero thing. Anyway, I recommend checking out at least the first three episodes (the third one “Manhunt” has the great Leslie Nielsen as Buck Frobisher) and if you like it after that… you’re welcome.

Saturday, Dizzy went to the graduation while I slept in… we’ll say it’s because she couldn’t get any more tickets but… I’m not complaining. Afterwards though, we met up at California Pizza Kitchen for lunch with the family, then again in the evening we hung out at her aunt’s house for a few drinks & reminiscing… mostly about times before I came around, but it was still a LOT of fun. Sunday was pretty lazy… but that’s why I’m gonna fill you up with some newsy knowledge… and a super movie review.

Tuesday night, Dizzy, Angera & I went to see a special preview of “Man of Steel”, the new Superman reboot starring Henry Cavill (“The Tudors”) as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Russell Crowe as Ja-Rel (bio daddy), Kevin Costner as Clark’s earth daddy, Diane Lane as Clark’s earth mama, and plenty of others in the cast like Laurence Fishburne, Harry Lennix, Christopher Meloni, Richard Schiff and on & on (and a superhot East German actress named Antje Traue, keep an eye on her). From the director of “300” & “Watchmen” Zach Snyder and the writer/producers of the “Dark Knight” trilogy, it was supposed to be a bit of a grittier more realistic Superman… and compared to the latest reboot from a few years ago, it definitely didn’t disappoint. The movie’s story is basically the combination of the original “Superman” (backstory of Krypton, intro of Superman) & “Superman II” (“KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!”) but is condensed into a 2.5 hour flick. This turns into the story being told in a lot of flashbacks, quick cuts, and can be a little off-putting & a little confusing at times… but overall, I’d say it was a pretty good flick. There’s a lot of action, some of which is pretty ridiculous & inconsistent… and plot holes abound… but this is Superman. I found it wildly entertaining, great score & tonal setting (I even broke a tear at one point), and the acting was very good. Henry Cavill does a great job of balancing the angsty side of a young Clark Kent with the charm that you’ve come to expect with Superman from the Christopher Reeve movies. Michael Shannon is pretty good as General Zod & the dichotomy of a man who will do anything to preserve his race, even if it means destroying most of it (just go with it) yet really fueled by vengeance at the same time. Amy Adams is cute… as she should be… but really the main thing I had with the movie is the INTENSE fight scenes & global destruction involved… with basically no repercussions. Spoiler alert/shocker: Manhattan (sorry Metropolis?) gets thoroughly throttled over the course of many epic battles… basically to the point of barren wasteland at the end of the final fight scene… yet during the resolution two minutes later, the Daily Planet is back to work like nothing happened. Now THAT’S a cleanup crew. Anyway, I would highly recommend going to watch the movie & I think everybody did a great job with it… but yeah, be ready to suspend your disbelief. P.S. There's a dragon...

Gats for Tots – In local news, Strobridge Elementary School in Hayward, California, held a toy-gun exchange program over the weekend, according to a report from CBS-5 San Francisco. Inspired by gun buy-back programs that focus on getting weapons off the streets, Principal Charles Hill felt a similar program for toys made a lot of sense. "Playing with toys guns, saying 'I'm going to shoot you,' desensitizes them," said Hill, "so, as they get older, it's easier for them to use a real gun." Students who participated were given books in exchange for their toy guns. They were also enrolled in a raffle to win a bike, the event's grand prize. CBS-5 spoke with parents who had brought their children to trade in their guns. One mother said she was always against toy guns, but she noted that her son felt left out when he saw the other kids playing with theirs. Some of the guns shown in the CBS-5 report were clearly fake, but others that were exchanged might easily have passed for real weapons. Police Officer Braydon Wilson, who was at the toy-gun exchange to talk to students about safety, told CBS-5 that sometimes kids will paint their toy guns to look like real ones. Other times, owners of real guns will paint the tip of the gun barrel orange to make it appear like a toy, according to Wilson. To sell to children? Hmm… I’m thinking that wasn’t the point of that last statement. The Daily Review spoke with Yih-Chau Chang, spokesperson for Responsible Citizens of California, a group that educates people about gun rights. "Having a group of children playing cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians is a normal part of growing up," Chang said to the Daily Review. "While the intentions are obviously good on the part of the school administration, this doesn't really educate children about guns or gun safety. Guns are used in crimes, but they are more often used in defensive ways, which prevent violent crime from occurring in the first place." So what do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Personally I took two things away from this… I like the idea of trading toy guns for books to hopefully educate the kids… you know, fill their heads with little bullets of knowledge. Secondly, I also really like the idea of painting the tip of my real gun to orange so that people disregard it until I knee cap ‘em.  Some may say that it defeats the purpose of using a gun as a form of deterrence to coax somebody with an implied harmless gun but… I warned ‘em… they chose to call my bluff… pop-pop… pop-pop-pop-pop. G-u-NIT!!! Haha… sorry, apparently I’m the only one that thinks that’s funny. Well then, how about this next story?

Gats for Tots 2: Reloaded - Two would-be robbers met their match on Monday evening when they encountered a brave 10-year-old. (Note that in this story, the child is described as “brave”) It all began around 5:30 p.m. when the suspects, dressed in disguise, knocked on the door of the Brooklyn home. When two teenage girls opened the door, the two men pushed passed them, and headed upstairs, according to the Associated Press. When one of the suspects tried to enter a bedroom on the second floor, the 40-year-old home owner slammed the bedroom door on one of the home invaders arms, causing him to drop the gun. The owner's 10-year-old son grabbed the gun and fired a shot into the wall. One of the suspects fired back, without hitting anyone. The would-be robbers then ran off. Police are investigating, according to the AP story. They say other kids were in the house at the time but did not witness anything. (Jesus, how many kids were in the house?) So yeah, there’s an instance were a child holding a gun may have saved a life, right? Weird… Another brave boy also recently made news for his quick thinking during a home invasion. In Detroit, when burglars forced their way into Jaden Kanka’s home, the 9-year-old heard the intruders talking to his mom and boyfriend in the front of the house. He sneaked out the one-story bedroom window and ran to a neighbor, who called the police. The criminals were still in the home when police arrived and were quickly arrested. Where do I stand on gun laws? Look, if you know how to use them then maybe you should have one, just in case. It’s like an emergency kit in your car. You don’t want to have to use it… but it’s good to know it’s there when you need it. As far as kids with guns? Not until they’ve proven that they can learn to respect it… and even then, when they can afford to buy their own. Just like driving a car.

Drones: Taking More American Jobs – Drones are in the news a lot today… for many reasons. They’re being used in strategic threat elimination in wars overseas. They’re assisting with recognizance missions in otherwise uninhabitable areas from the wreckage of a fallen building to a nuclear hotspot at a nuclear power plant. They also remind many of those HK Killers from the Terminator movies & various other sci-fi mischief makers. However, now… in the present… this may be the next big threat to American jobs (such as eliminating strategic threats). TacoCopter turned out to be a fake. So did the Burrito Bomber. But now, the skies, at least in the U.K., have finally opened up to fast food: Domino's Pizza has carried out a delivery order by drone helicopter. Video of the DomiCopter—developed by Aerosight—was posted by T + Biscuits, the creative agency brought in by the pizza chain's U.K. headquarters. The copter reportedly can deliver up to two large pizzas over a four-mile radius in 10 minutes or less (which basically means all of San Francisco or Manhattan). “If anything, it went quicker than a pizza boy," T + Biscuits founder Tom Hatton told Fox News. "We were amazed at how easy it was going to be.” Of course, there are a few caveats about the drone delivery. First, it was not technically a drone mission. While Domino's said GPS coordinates could potentially be used in future delivery flights, this inaugural mission was controlled by an experienced drone copter pilot who had the benefit of several cameras to help guide the flight. Second, drone flights come with several restrictions in the U.S. For example, commercial drone flights are illegal in the U.S. until 2015. Why? You know why… Even then, in most states, drones can fly up to around 400 feet but must have the permission of landowners before entering private property. That could easily be handled by a one-click legal agreement with each online drone delivery order. But for now, the politics and science of drone food delivery remain complicated (and undiscussed really). In the meantime, Domino's U.K. says it will conduct further tests, including whether the drone can handle a larger payload to incorporate items such as 2-liter bottles of soda into future deliveries. Yes my friends… technology is making you fatter faster… and I think it’s great. I still expect my pizza to be cold, look like it’s been dropped a few times & somehow I’m pretty sure even the drone will give me the sh*t eye when I give them the tip.

Death of a Word – As you may know, I studied German for six years (well over a decade ago) and it has served me well… okay, actually it only came in handy watching “Inglorious Basterds” and other WWII movies… but still, I’m hopeful that one day it’ll help out. Anyway, the German language has one less long word to worry about… and it’s a doozy. "Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz," a 65-letter word meaning "law delegating beef label monitoring," has been dropped following changes to European Union law regulating the testing of cattle, the BBC reports. The so-called "tapeworm" word—common in Germany—was introduced in 1999 during the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (aka "mad cow disease") crisis. But now that the EU has halted testing of "healthy cattle at abattoirs," the BBC said, "the need for the word vanished." With "rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz" ousted, the 49-letter  Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitaenswitwe" ("widow of a Danube steamboat company captain") appears to have inherited the longest-word mantle, though it does not appear in the German standard language dictionary. The longest word found in there is "Kraftfahrzeughaftpflichtversicherung," or "automobile liability insurance." The longest word in the English language is the subject of nerdy debate, mostly over whether chemical terms should be considered words. The chemical name of the largest known protein, for instance, has 189,819 letters. (Last year, a man attempted to pronounce it in a three-hour, 30-minute YouTube video.) Really? Come on now, chemistry nerds… "Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis," a lung disease caused by inhaling very fine ash and sand dust, was the longest word to appear in a major dictionary when it turned up in the Webster's New International Dictionary in 1939. My money is on "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," a song from the 1964 Disney film "Mary Poppins," that appears in the Oxford English Dictionary. What does that mean? Absolutely nothing. German words are funny… but now we bid… that word, auf wiedersehen (until I see you later… because I’m pretty sure there’ll be another meat-born disease in Europe soon enough & then… that word will come back into everyday lexicon).

Bacon Update – Bacon & donuts! Everybody knows that bacon & donuts go together like… like bacon & eggs… or bacon & beer… or bacon & bleu cheese… or bacon & bacon. However, Dunkin’ Donuts wants everyone to have the opportunity to experience its new culinary creation. So the store has decided to begin selling its bacon, egg and doughnut sandwiches at all of its locations beginning June 7th. The sandwich contains a fried egg and slices of smoked bacon stuffed between the halves of a sliced, glazed doughnut. “The glazed doughnut is light and fluffy and gives you just the right amount of sweetness,” says Dunkin’ Executive Chef Stan Frankenthaler. “Combined with the lightly salted, smoked bacon, the texture and flavors marry together in a wonderful way. It’s a delicious bite of the perfect harmonization of sweet and savory flavors.” And the timing is perfect, as June 7 was also the too-good-to-be-true holiday National Doughnut Day. As it turns out, Dunkin' is not the first operation to produce a doughnut-based sandwich. The Illinois minor league baseball team the Gateway Grizzlies has been selling a doughnut hamburger, using Krispy Kremes in place of traditional buns. The ballpark says it sells 100-200 of the sandwiches each game night for $4.50 each. However, the bacon donut sandwich is not the avalanche of calories some might expect. In fact, it clocks in at only 360 calories, less than Dunkin’s turkey sausage sandwich (390 calories), which is marketed at more health conscious consumers. Then again, we’re talking about comparing Dunkin’ Donuts to Dunkin’ Donuts. Interestingly, food chains that offer lower-calorie dining options saw an 11% spike in sales last year, while those that didn’t saw a 15% drop in sales, according to information released by the Hudson Institute. However, as the AP notes, over-the-top food options have proved incredibly popular as well. For example, Taco Bell said its Doritos Locos Taco has proved to be its most successful item ever, boosting the chain’s overall sales by 8% in 2012 (and that’s some SERIOUS coin for a staple chain like Taco Bell). And if that's the case, the bacon doughnut might just prove to be a strong addition for Dunkin' Donuts, which already generated some $5.5 billion in 2012 across its 7,015 U.S. locations. What’s the point? Bacon sells! And yes… I kinda want bacon egg & donut sandwiches to be part of the next Bacon Day…

What’s that? WHEN IS THE NEXT BACON DAY? Well, in honor of the great thespian & Philadelphia’s own Kevin Norwood Bacon’s 55th birthday coming up in early July (and basically the one year anniversary of the idea), we are throwing the next Bacon Day within the next month. Really just trying to decide between the two weekends before & after… and just in time to introduce two new roommates to the incredible event!!! So if you’re interested, let me know & I’d be happy to send you the details. We’d love to host you & share our delicious treats with you.

Aside from that, not a whole lot more else to say, work is work, play is play, tomorrow is another day! Have a great day everybody!!!

Premier Provider of Pretty Panda Poo Pots

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Not much going on the past few nights. I played a few pickup games Tuesday, chatted with Pixie & one of her friends, Nurse picked me up In-N-Out Burger on the way back from the airport, introduced Bee Master to “Eastbound & Down” and she finds it hilariously offensive, just like everybody else. Last night, I watched this British show called “Skins” with Nurse about evil teenager drama with semi-irritating accents… and it’s alright, but I was watching… and I asked Nurse, “Is that douchy pretty boy the kid from ‘About a Boy’?” “It sure is… I think I preferred him as a chubby pre-teen.” Eh, that’s about all I’ve got to say about that… except there was one scene where a kid dropped a baby that struck us as hilarious for some reason. Mostly because it wasn’t even really acknowledged that the baby had just been dropped… apparently on a hardwood floor. Don’t worry, no babies or puppies were harmed in the filming of this show.

So I’ve decided that I’m going to the Utah vs. Cal college football game when they come here in October. I even already have 2nd row seats. That’s right, b**ches. Football is BACK!!! I’m also thinking that I might need to go check out a Giants game before the season’s over in the next month… and I’ve been getting emails about the Kraft Hunger Bowl on New Year’s Eve, where the Utes may also be playing (since they’re in the Pac-12 now) and even if not them, then still a great game. So in summation, I must just have an inkling to go check out AT&T Park since I haven’t been there yet. I may just go for the trifecta. Gonna see if my dad wants to go with me to the Utah-Cal game, give him first dibs for an early Christmas present or something. I figure if he can make it out here for the weekend, I’ve got free room, board & entertainment for him when he gets here. It worked for the Eagles-49ers game last year, so we’ll see. He’s got about 7 weeks to plan ahead.

I also watched “Insidious” starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne & Lin Shaye and directed by James Wan (“Saw”). It’s the story of a family of five whose eldest son suddenly & mysteriously went into a coma. Almost immediately, strange things start to happen around the house, so they move. However, they soon find out that it wasn’t the house that was haunted… it was their son in a coma. Now, I wasn’t expecting much given that it was from the director of “Saw” and the premise seemed… a little stretched. However, I stand corrected. It’s PG-13 (a little language & frightening situations) and it did start out a little slow… but there was definitely a creepy mood established… and it wasn’t completely over-the-top, very subtle… and then sh*t gets real good. I don’t want to give anything away… but I really liked this horror flick. It’s a lot like “Poltergeist” where it’s just genuinely terrifying but not overly gory or anything. I highly recommend it. Go check it out!!! Anyway, here’s some news…

Vick Update – It warms the cockles of my heart to bring you this next story… because I know that some of you out there STILL don’t care for Michael Vick… but as my buddy Charlie sang to me this weekend, you can’t keep a good dog down (Too soon? Or is it because it’s an “All Dogs Go to Heaven” reference?). Just more than two years after being released from prison, out of work, mired in bankruptcy and facing an uncertain future, Michael Vick is again on top of the world. Vick, who served 19 months at federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kansas, on felony dogfighting charges before joining the Philadelphia Eagles as a third-string quarterback two years ago, signed one of the richest contracts in NFL history on Tuesday. Vick’s six-year, $100 million deal makes him the third-highest-paid player in the NFL, behind only Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. “It’s a lot of money, how ever you look at it,” Vick said. “Obviously, it’s going to create a lot of demands. I know what comes along with it, and I know how to handle it. But it’s not even about the money. It’s about the changes that have been made in my life. Kids have an opportunity to see that you should never count yourself out. But at the same time, don’t put yourself in a position where you’ve got to make a miraculous comeback. That’s not what it’s about.” Vick, twice a Pro Bowl quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons before he went to prison, said there were times while he was in prison he wondered if he would ever get back what he once had. “Sometimes as a man, you fear what you can’t see,” Vick said at a press conference at the Eagles practice facility. “Nobody can predict the future. You don’t know what’s going to happen. Tomorrow’s not promised. The only thing you can do is live your life, hope for the best, continue to have faith, believe in yourself. The thing for me was believing in the people who were there for me in my time of need. … You never know what’s going to happen. Expect the worst and hope for the best, and that’s what I did. God was on my side, and I’m here today.” Amen! He was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2010 after winning eight of 11 starts, throwing a career-high 21 touchdown passes and rushing for nine more. The Eagles retained his rights by signing him to a one-year, $16 million franchise tag, but his new contract runs through 2016. “This is a great story all the way through,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said. “This is really what America’s all about. Second chance and Mike took full advantage of that. And then when he was given a second chance to start in the National Football League, he took full advantage of that and turned it into this.” Vick became the first player in NFL history to sign more than one $100 million contract in his career. On Dec. 23, 2004, with the Falcons on their way to the NFC Championship game, where they lost to the Eagles, Vick signed a 10-year deal worth $130 million. But he played only 32 games under that deal before legal problems derailed his career. “I’ve learned … don’t take anything for granted,” Vick said. “I did that at one point when I had the big contract in Atlanta, and I think that will definitely help me now in understanding what’s most important and how to move forward in my life.” Vick said his legal problems and lengthy prison stay will always drive him to excel, no matter how much money he’s earning. “It’s always something that’s going to be a part of me. It’s the reason why I work so hard each and every day. It’s the reason I come to work dedicated to become the best that I can be. Nothing’s going to come easy in life, and I’ve learned a lot of lessons, some the hard way, and I think just the things that I’ve been through have helped mold me into the person I am and what (is in) my future and that’s continuing to do things the right way.” Tell me this isn’t a great story of a man learning his lesson. TELL ME!!! Next stop: The Super Bowl? “The common goal is to bring that ring back to the city of Philadelphia. That’s why we play. That’s what we’re all working for. As a competitor, I don’t feel my career will be complete without that.” Well, even I never thought that he’d sign a nine-digit contract again… so now that I think he can bring Philly it’s first NFL championship in over 50 years, anything’s possible. Congratulations on redemption, Mr. Vick!!!

Most Trusted Celebrity – Okay, so I don’t expect Mr. Vick to top list any time soon but… it seems like former "Golden Girls" actress Betty White also has the Midas touch. White, 89, is both the most popular and most trusted celebrity with Americans and the person most likely to drive up the business of a brand she might choose to endorse, according to a poll released on Wednesday. But the Reuters/Ipsos poll suggested that companies should stay away from Paris Hilton and Charlie Sheen if they want to promote their products. The socialite and reality TV actress, and the fired "Two and A Half Men" star topped the list of the most unpopular and least trusted personalities and were deemed most likely to damage any brands they choose to support (except I’m pretty sure that if you made an energy drink called “Tiger’s Blood” right now, you’d be selling like hot cakes). White, the only surviving member of the key cast members of TV's "Golden Girls" 1980s comedy, has enjoyed a career resurgence in the last few years as a saucy senior in films like "The Proposal" and the TV show "Hot in Cleveland". She also won an Emmy Award last year for hosting satirical sketch show "Saturday Night Live". White scored an 86% favorable opinion in the Reuters/Ipsos poll, beating Oscar winners Denzel Washington, Sandra Bullock and Clint Eastwood in the survey of the 100 most popular personalities. Some 44% of those questioned said they would be more likely to do business with a company if White endorsed it. At the other extreme, 54 percent of the 2,012 Americans questioned for the poll said they would trust a company less if it were endorsed by Sheen, with Hilton coming in second. Pop star Britney Spears, actor Mel Gibson and golfer Tiger Woods -- who lost several major endorsements after his 2009 sex scandal -- also fared badly. Below is a list of the top 10 most popular personalities with their "favorable" rating by percentage of voters.

1. Betty White - 86% favorable
2. Denzel Washington – 85%
3. Sandra Bullock - 84%
4. Clint Eastwood – 83%
5. Tom Hanks - 81% (Forrest?)
6. Harrison Ford – 80%
7. Morgan Freeman - 79%
8. Kate Middleton – 79% (why?)
9. Will Smith - 77% (hmm…)
10. Johnny Depp – 76%

Below is a list of the top 10 most unpopular personalities with their "unfavorable" rating by percentage of voters.
1. Paris Hilton - 60% unfavorable
2. Charlie Sheen – 52%
3. Britney Spears – 45%
4. Kanye West - 45%
5. Arnold Schwarzenegger – 44%
6. Tiger Woods - 42%
7. Kim Kardashian – 38%
8. Mel Gibson - 33%
9. Donald Trump – 31%
10. LeBron James – 29%

Okay, so… a few observations from this list. Favorable side: People like older people who do voice-over work & just keep to themselves. That’s cool. Unfavorable side: I find it interesting that Arnie is more hated for banging the cleaning lady than Tiger is for banging half of the porn industry. Why? Tiger apologized. Kanye is arrogant as all hell, but he never went on a drunken rant about Judaism & then leave threatening voicemails for his gold digging girlfriend. So why is he higher on the list. What exactly has Kim Kardashian done besides get f**ked by Ray J on tape & be linked to a bunch of athletes? So I’ve figured it out. People love you & trust you if you do what they expect you to do, not necessarily what you want to do. Pop quiz: Has anybody in the top 10 played the villain in a movie? Okay, Morgan Freeman & Johnny Depp have a few times… but very rarely. Sir Anthony Hopkins could be the most trustworthy individual on Earth… but because of his choices to take challenging roles, including Hannibal Lechter, you wouldn’t want to be in the same room as him. Now, look at the bottom 10. If they’re not portrayed as greedy or rich socialites, they’ve made horrible mistakes… yet some are much more reviled than others. The key is to at least feign remorse for what you did. Paris? I never expect anything from her anyway. I’m borderline on whether she’s really a celebrity & should be on this list. Charlie, Kanye, Arnie – all brash & unapologetic for who they are. Tiger, Mel, LeBron – Apologized to a certain extent… and seriously, why does everybody hate LeBron? He made a mistake in the way of presenting his “Decision” or whatever… but he’s still a good guy & amazing athlete. Interesting tid-bit, Michael Vick isn’t on the bottom 10. Think about it. Sigh… and he’s going to have another $100 million dollars. That’s Trump money!

Make Your Own Money – Well, there’s one way to have that kind of money besides earning it… making it. A small town in central Italy is trying to go independent and mint its own money in protest at government austerity cuts. Filettino, set in rugged hill country around 100 km (65 miles) east of Rome, is rebelling against a proposal to merge the governments of towns with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants to save money. Filettino has only around 550 people, but instead of merging with neighboring Trevi, mayor Luca Sellari is trying to go it alone and set up a "principality" along the lines of the famous republic of San Marino to the north. He has started minting Filettino's own bank currency, the "Fiorito," with his photo on the back, which he says is already being used by the townsfolk. "We aim to achieve real autonomy from Italy and we have the financial resources to do it," Sellari said in an interview on the town's website. There was no immediate comment from the central government in Rome. Mayors from all over Italy are up in arms about proposals to cut local government funding and merge small towns as part of a 45.5 billion euro ($65.3 billion) austerity plan to balance the country's budget by 2013. Mayors plan a protest in Milan Monday although media reports say the government is preparing significant changes to the budget, including a substantial dilution of the proposals on local government. Well, we’ll see how long this lasts… but yeah, it may be difficult to get everybody to convert to your money. I’m just saying… if Disney can’t do it, what chance does a little town in Italy have? Do they still do Disney Dollars or whatever at the parks? Oh well, there ARE better ways to get that pa-per…

This Week In Pimpin’ - Prostitutes (a.k.a. Schlampes) in the German city of Bonn must carry a ticket purchased from a new parking metre-like machine while working the streets… or face hefty fines from tax authorities in a scheme launched Monday night. In Germany, ladies of the night pay income tax (the level of which varies from region to region) but compliance is difficult to enforce with women seeking business on the street. Germany's first "sex tax meters," from which prostitutes can purchase a ticket for 6 Euros (about $9) per night, will ensure the tax system is fairly implemented, a city spokeswoman said. "Inspectors will monitor compliance -- not every evening but frequently," the spokeswoman told Reuters. If caught without a valid ticket, offenders will first be reprimanded, then face fines and later even a ban (GASP!!! Illegal prostitution?). About 200 prostitutes work in Bonn, the former capital of West Germany. Due to protests from residents, city officials have limited the areas of operation to specific quarters. But critics say this has made it easier for prostitutes to ply their trade (duh). The city has erected what officials call "consummation areas," wooden parking garages where customers driving cars can retreat to with prostitutes. Hmm… better than alleys… but not better than motels. Well, at least the government has found a way to get their cut. Basically it’s like parking… but for hooking. Simple, produces revenue, enforcement will be tricky but hey, they’re still getting their cut. This could catch on. Not $100 million contract strong… but could pay for some new roads or something. Still… not my favorite way to make money that I found today…

Panda Update - Zhu Cheng, a Chinese sculptor, created a statue with the help of nine 11 year-old art students in the central Chinese city of Chengdu, the home of a giant panda breeding centre (and kick-ass place half the world away). No, it’s not a statue of a panda… but rather a replica of the Venus di Milo… made from panda poo. According to the Henan Business Daily newspaper, it has already been purchased by Uli Sigg, a Swiss businessman who owns the world's largest collection of contemporary Chinese art, for 300,000 yuan (about $50,000!!!). Mr Sigg, who was formerly the Swiss ambassador to China, told the Henan Business Daily that he thought the statue was "full of creativity and innovation". "We made the statue in October," said Mr Zhu. "We took a clay mould of the statue and then pasted panda dung onto it using vegetable glue," he added. "I have been thinking about using panda dung in my work for years (who hasn’t?). After all, pandas are China's national treasure, so anything relating to them is interesting. It was quite hard to get hold of the dung, however. The first time I applied they declined, and I had to write a letter explaining what I was going to do with it." Imagine reading that letter for the first time. No, no, you don’t understand. I want to take these massive amount of panda dung… and replicate the Venus di Milo. Oh, well in that case… Anyway, the rest is history. The statue is currently on display at a charity exhibition at the Zhengzhou Art Museum in Henan province, where it has drawn large crowds. Items crafted out of dried panda dung (which is said to have a relatively neutral smell because of the panda's all-bamboo diet) have been sold at the gift shop of the Chengdu Research Centre for Giant Panda Breeding since 2007.

In case you were wondering… I was there in 2006, otherwise I just might have some panda dung in my collection. The shop said its panda dung paper and small pots were particularly popular. Mmm… pretty panda poo pots. That’s not even a joke. Huang Xiangming, a spokesman, said the centre used to pay 5,000 yuan to 8,000 yuan a month to dispose of the waste, but was now using it to generate revenue. Adult pandas produce around 45lbs of dung a day (JESUS!!!). China currently has 312 giant pandas in captivity, with 31 successful births this year. Mr Sigg has been collecting Chinese art since 1985 and is said to be the only collector who has witnessed the whole development of the Chinese contemporary art world since its infancy. Wang Weiwei, who coordinates the China Contemporary Art Award, which was set up by Mr Sigg in 1997, said the collector had a number of agents buying up Chinese art for him. Congratulations on your purchase, sir!!!

But let’s get back to the numbers, shall we. They used to spend… let’s say $1000 a month to dispose of panda waste. Now, they have 312 pandas producing 45 pounds of poo per day, so roughly… and I’m NOT joking… just over 5 MILLION pounds of poo per year. Go ahead, do the math. So you see, that’s roughly a dollar for every 400 pounds cost, which really isn’t bad if you think about it. However, if they can instead sell it to tourists, artists, students, scientists, fecophiles, or an aspiring entrepreneur looking to corner the market on premium odorless panda fertilizer, even at something like $1 per pound… then you’ve taken what would’ve been an expense and turned it into a profit maker… of roughly $5 MILLION a year. Now, I’m in business & I know those numbers aren’t going to be all profit… and even the dollar per pound might be ambitious… and I know not all five million pounds are going to be sellable… but hey, it can only turn into a good thing. Turning scat into gold, my friend. All it takes is somebody with an idea & the ability to sell it. If I can be the Father of Panda Porn to help save the species, then I can be the Premier Peddler of Prime Panda Poo to make some mother lovin’ money.

So those are some of my ideas for making money so that I can enjoy a few good sporting events at AT&T Park… or finance my upcoming Vegas trip… or just cushion my mattress with dolla dolla bills y’all so that I can feel freshly laundered notes against my bare skin. Whatever… it’s my money. I do what I want with it. Have a great day everybody!!!

Where Should I Go Next?
